BUFFALO ’66 presented by Strange Brew
November 1, 2023 : 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
This film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew and will feature a pre-film intro by Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina.
Buffalo ’66 is the directorial debut of controversial filmmaker Vincent Gallo. Filmed entirely in his hometown of Buffalo, New York, Gallo plays Billy Brown, a recently released convict returning home from prison for the first time in five-years to visit his indifferent parents. Billy immediately kidnaps a tap dancer named Layla (Played by a charismatic Christina Ricci) and implores her to act as his wife before his awkward family reunion. Layla unexpectedly and enthusiastically takes on the challenge of playing romantic partners and as the couple gets to know each other, BIlly soon spirals into a delusional fantasy of assassinating a Buffalo Bills’ kicker that he blames for getting him imprisoned.
Buffalo ’66 is a poignant and often-funny character study exploring male insecurities. Gallo’s semi-autobiographical film has gained a cult following for its washed-out color palette and its polaroid-inspired visual aesthetic that predicted the popularity of the hipstamatic and original instagram filters by nearly a decade. The film’s use of British Progressive Rock, most notably King Crimson & Yes, which Gallo uses in sequences as something more akin to Dream Pop than Prog, is another part of its lasting fascination. With a strong supporting cast that includes Anjelica Huston, Mickey Rourke & Rosanna Arquette, Buffalo ’66 remains a unique, low-budget, late ’90s comedy crime drama that continues to inspire young filmmakers today.
