Whiskey-Drinkin’ Western Matinee: RIO BRAVO (1959) presented by Switchgrass Spirits

November 19, 2023 : 1:00 pm

This whiskey-drinkin Western matinee is presented by our friends at Switchgrass Spirits, who have devised some delicious specialty cocktails just for this event. Switchgrass will also be selling booze by the bottle — perfect for a Christmas gift or just a little liquid assistance to ease you through the holiday season.

This immortal western directed by Howard Hawks features an all-star cast, including the legendary hero John Wayne and legendary boozer Dean Martin. In what was arguably Howard Hawks’s finest western, and perhaps even his best film, Wayne, Martin, teenybopper Ricky Nelson, and beloved character actor Walter Brennan hole up in a sheriff’s office, there to protect a prisoner from a band of hired guns outside. Angie Dickinson plays Feathers, Wayne’s flirtatious romantic foil. But the subtly stylized setting soon becomes an arena for a moral battle, as the characters discover and test their resources of trust, skill, and courage, values poised against encroaching chaos. It’s American filmmaking at its finest—clean, clear, and direct—and it’s also the most optimistic masterpiece on film, valiantly shoring fragments against human ruin. Superb in every respect, from Wayne’s performance to Russell Harlan’s brilliant night photography. Rio Bravo was a major influence on filmmakers such as John Carpenter whose own thriller Assault on Precinct 13 is in many ways an urbanized remake of Hawks’ frontier classic.

“To watch Rio Bravo is to see a master craftsman at work. The film is seamless. There is not a shot that is wrong. It is uncommonly absorbing, and the 141-minute running time flows past like running water.” -Roger Ebert

“The movie is simultaneously an apogee of the classic Western style, with its principled violence in defense of just law, and an eccentrically hyperbolic work of modernism, which yokes both bumptious erotic comedy and soul-searing rawness to the mission.” -Richard Brody, The New Yorker

“A genre-defining gem [and] a uniquely entertaining work of art.” -Bradley Gibson, Film Threat
