LONE WOLF AND CUB: WHITE HEAVEN IN HELL (1974) presented by Strange Brew

January 3 : 7:00 pm

This film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew and will feature a pre-film intro by Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina.

Lone Wolf and Cub: White Heaven in Hell is the sixth and final film of the beloved “Baby Cart Assassin” ’70s cult series. Starring the incredible Tomisaburō Wakayama reprising his role as the deadly Lone Wolf, this culminating entry continues the story of wandering sword-for-hire Ogami Ittō (Wakayama) as he pushes his infant son Daigoro in a baby cart through Edo-era Japan while they are pursued by assassins. This time Lord Retsudō has dispatched the Tsuchigumo, a group of killers who practice black magic, to kill the Lone Wolf.

The Tsuchigumo’s maddening assassination technique is to burrow like moles through the earth and secretly kill anyone the Lone Wolf comes into contact with, leaving him in a constant state of paranoia. Pushed to the brink of the snowy mountains of Japan, the Lone Wolf has his final showdown with Lord Retsudō and his assassins. The resulting ending battle, featuring 1,000 ninjas on skis and the baby cart repurposed as a deadly sled, is unforgettable and a must-see for any fan of Samurai films.

The film series was set to continue past White Heaven in Hell, but Japanese television greenlit a Lone Wolf and Cub TV series recasting the lead role and causing Wakayama to abandon any future films. The notorious final entry both left fans wanting a more finite ending while also leaving them absolutely mesmerized by the climactic final battle. The noteworthy snow-capped blood-bath even landed the Lone Wolf the number one spot for highest body count for a single character with a staggering 150 kills on moviebodycount.com.
