SUMMARY:HALLOWEEN POE-A-THON: Silent Poe -- The Fall of the House of Usher (1928) + The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar (1936)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis Halloween\, we doff our cap to the granddaddy of horror\, Edgar Allan Poe\, with our all-day POE-A-THON! Featuring nearly 12 hours of Poe adaptations\, we’ve got everything from avant-garde silents to stone-cold classics to a mystery WTF disasterpiece you won’t want to miss. Plus THREE movies starring St. Louis’ beloved hometown horror hero\, Vincent Price\, and two FREE events. Each screening is ticketed separately\, so come for a movie or two\, or stay all day … if your nerves can handle it. \n\n\n\n“I barely stirred during the film’s 66-minute running time. A tone\, an atmosphere\, was created that actually worked. As with Nosferatu\, the film seemed less a fiction than the realization of some phantasmagoric alternative reality.” – Roger Ebert \n\n\n\nPlaying like an opium-induced hallucination\, The Fall of the House of Usher is silent cinema at its eeriest and most evocative. Directed by French Impressionist filmmaker Jean Epstein and co-written by legendary Surrealist Luis Buñuel\, this atmospheric nightmare takes one of Poe’s most famous stories and traps you inside its titular location\, a sprawling\, unsettlingly sparse mansion that seems to breathe\, its walls bending under the pressure of obsession and impending doom. With its dreamlike pacing\, uncanny imagery\, and disorienting visual tricks\, the film transforms the tale into a trance-inducing spectral cinema worthy of comparison to Nosferatu and Vampyr. \n\n\n\nThis program also includes the 1936 silent short The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar based on Poe’s story about a doctor who performs a hypnosis experiment on a dying man\, trapping him between life and death. Surprisingly graphic and grotesque for a low-budget Italian film from the 1930s\, this 12-minute short is a perfect Halloween trick and treat. \n\n\n\nThis program runs approximately 77 minutes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nWhen a screening is sold out\, we open a waitlist 30 minutes before showtime. SUMMARY:HALLOWEEN POE-A-THON: Karloff and Lugosi face off in The Black Cat (1934) w/ The Tell-Tale Heart (1941)
\n\n\n\n“This bizarre\, utterly irrational masterpiece has images that bury themselves in the mind” – The Guardian \n\n\n\nHorror icons Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi teamed up—and faced off—for the first time in director Edgar G. Ulmer’s macabre Pre-code chiller The Black Cat\, which borrows its title (and admittedly not a whole lot else) from Edgar Allan Poe’s tale of terror. Anticipating Rocky Horror by four decades\, the film spins a tale of American honeymooners\, Joan and Peter Allison\, held captive in a creepy mansion against their will. But instead of a transsexual Transylvanian\, here it’s Black Mass high priest Hjalmar Poelzig (Karloff)\, who has chosen Joan to be the Devil’s bride. Lugosi co-stars as Poelzig’s frenemy\, psychiatrist Dr. Vitus Werdegast\, in this singular Universal chiller that features necrophilia\, ailurophobia (Lugosi collapses at the sight of a cat)\, drugs\, a deadly game of chess\, torture\, flaying\, and a human sacrifice. \n\n\n\nThis program also includes the 1941 short\, The Tell-Tale Heart. The directorial debut of legendary auteur Jules Dassin (Night and the City\, Rififi)\, this 20-minute scorcher is “positively a-swill in Orson Wellesian tropes: the crouching camera\, the chiaroscuro lighting\, the mood-deepening use of silences and sound effects” (Richard Corliss). \n\n\n\nThe full program runs approximately runs approximately 86 minutes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:HALLOWEEN POE-A-THON: Vincent Price in HOUSE OF USHER (1960)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis Halloween\, we doff our cap to the granddaddy of horror\, Edgar Allan Poe\, with our all-day POE-A-THON! Each screening is ticketed separately\, so come for a movie or two\, or stay all day … if your nerves can handle it. \n\n\n\n“A hallucinatory swirl of a movie that has the feel of an especially sharp nightmare.” – Keith Phipps\, The Dissolve \n\n\n\nWhen exploitation maestro Roger Corman decided to raise his game by hiring Vincent Price to star in an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic story “The Fall of the House of Usher\,” he kicked off a cycle of Poe adaptations that would redefine American horror cinema. Price stars as the mercurial Roderick Usher\, who lives in a vast crumbling mansion with his sister Madeleine (Myrna Fahey). When Madeleine’s fiance (Mark Damon) comes to visit\, Roderick tries to talk him out of the wedding\, explaining that the Usher family is cursed and that extending its bloodline will only prolong the agony. Madeleine wants to elope with Philip\, but neither of them can predict what ruthless lengths Roderick will go to in order to keep them apart. Richard Matheson’s intelligent\, literate script is enhanced by Floyd Crosby’s stylish widescreen cinematography\, but it’s Vincent Price’s anguished conviction in one of his signature roles that makes the film so chillingly memorable over half a century on. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:HALLOWEEN POE-A-THON: Vincent Price presents An Evening of Edgar Allan Poe (1970) -- FREE!
DESCRIPTION:This Halloween\, we doff our cap to the granddaddy of horror\, Edgar Allan Poe\, with our all-day POE-A-THON! \n\n\n\n“50+ minutes of Vincent Price reading Edgar Allan Poe shorts in his highly dramatized fashion? …YES PLEASE!! What an incredible work of atmospheric storytelling.” – Matt Winfield\, Letterboxd \n\n\n\nAfter Vincent Price gave a dramatic reading of Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart to a mesmerized audience on The Mike Douglas Show\, executive producer Ken Johnson approached the actor about enacting that Poe story and three others for a television special. It would prove to be a complete tour de force performance\, and one the venerable actor considered his greatest ever. With minimal stage decoration\, music by Les Baxter\, and an abundance of enthusiasm\, Price delivers blistering dramatized readings of The Tell-Tale Heart\, The Sphinx\, The Cask of Amontillado\, and The Pit and the Pendulum\, each in distinctly different character (and often two) and a full wardrobe provided by his wife and costume designer\, Mary. The results are electrifying—the perfect way to spend an hour of your Halloween night. \n\n\n\nThe full program runs 54 minutes. \n\n\n\nThis event is not ticketed. Seats are first come\, first served. Doors open around 6:30 pm\, after the conclusion of HOUSE OF USHER. SUMMARY:HALLOWEEN POE-A-THON: Vincent Price in THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (1964)
Vincent Price stars as the diabolical\, devil-worshipping Prince Prospero who reigns over an empire of death and debauchery during the time of the Black Death. Propero’s castle is a haven of depravity amidst the suffering of the plague\, but when a mysterious\, uninvited guest crashes his lavish masquerade ball\, there’ll be hell to pay as the party atmosphere turns into a danse macabre! Featuring eye-popping Cinemascope photography courtesy of DP Nicolas Roeg (who would go on to direct his own horror classic\, Don’t Look Now\, also playing this month)\, The Masque of the Red Death finds Corman at his most ambitious\, Price at his most chilling\, and Poe adapted with the uncanny sense of awe\, mystery\, and black humor his work demands.
