SUMMARY:ROSE OF NEVADA (2025) -- "a stupefying\, time-slipping ghost story"
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Like nothing else in modern movies. Feels unearthed from the deep\, dark recesses of the unconscious.” – Nick Schager\, The Daily Beast \n\n\n\n“A stupefying\, time-slipping ghost story” (The Film Stage) from Mark Jenkin\, the visionary director of Enys Men\, Rose of Nevada is a seasick sci-fi-inflected journey into the unknown. Or\, as critic Brian Tallerico put it\, “a mind-fuck” that “reminds you of the work of Mike Leigh and David Lynch at the same time.” \n\n\n\nThree decades ago\, the Rose of Nevada vanished at sea\, along with its crew. Now\, it has returned. In a remote fishing village\, its reappearance is embraced as an auspicious sign\, with the local citizens convinced the luck of their economically devastated community may turn\, if only the ship sails again. Joining the crew is Nick (George MacKay\, 1917)\, desperate to provide for his young family\, and Liam (Callum Turner\, Fantastic Beasts)\, a mysterious drifter eager to escape his past. After a successful voyage\, they return to harbor\, only to find that nothing is as they remember it. \n\n\n\nShot on 16mm film with a vintage Bolex H16\, a camera that only allows a maximum runtime of 28 seconds per take\, and edited with a haunting\, rhythmic pulse\, Rose of Nevada is\, like its characters\, adrift in time—ferociously contemporary yet profoundly haunted by the past. It’s also very weird\, very cool\, and like nothing else in contemporary cinema. \n\n\n\nPlease note: Start time was originally listed as 7 pm. It has been moved to 7:30 pm. \n\n\n\nWHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING…\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Brilliantly weird” \n\n\n\n\n“With Rose of Nevada\, Jenkin has further cemented himself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary cinema… brilliantly weird and wholly intoxicating.” \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Upcoming \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Mind-fuck” \n\n\n\n\n“It’s not every day that you see a film that reminds you of the work of Mike Leigh and David Lynch at the same time. Still\, there aren’t a lot of movies like this mind-fuck of a flick… I won’t forget it.” \n\n\n\n\n\nRogerEbert.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Moving… unnerving… striking” \n\n\n\n\n“An experience as moving as it is unnerving\, and as the piercing screeching of iron rods announces the Rose of Nevada is to leave port once more\, it is we the audience there to wave a pained goodbye\, quietly stunned by the ethereal aura of Jenkin’s striking creation.” \n\n\n\n\n\n★ ★ ★ ★ ★ \n\n\n\nLittle White Lies \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Animated kitty adventure FLOW (2024)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Dreamy\, epic\, perilous and very beautiful” – The Washington Post \n\n\n\nA wondrous journey\, through realms natural and mystical\, Flow follows a courageous cat after his home is devastated by a great flood. Teaming up with a capybara\, a lemur\, a bird\, and a dog to navigate a boat in search of dry land\, they must rely on trust\, courage\, and wits to survive the perils of a newly aquatic planet. From the boundless imagination of Latvian animator Gints Zilbalodis\, Flow is a thrilling animated spectacle as well as a profound meditation on the fragility of the environment and the spirit of friendship and community. Told without dialogue and animated entirely with free graphics software\, Zilbalodis’s film is an ingenious feat of deeply personal\, purely visual storytelling—and the perfect animal-centric entry in our I’M ON A BOAT series! \n\n\n\nEach month\, DRAWN VISIONS presents an outré gem from the wild\, wonderful world of animation. Focusing on the strange\, the underseen\, and the unclassifiable\, this series proves cartoons aren’t just for kids\, they’re for total freaks too! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Pre-Code delight ONE WAY PASSAGE (1932) w/ "Steamboat Willie"
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the best filmed love stories of all time\, the sublime One Way Passage is simply one of the great pleasures of life.” – Pre-Code.com \n\n\n\nA tragic love story told with the lightest\, most life-fulfilling touch\, One Way Passage is one of the most immaculate delights in Pre-Code cinema. The Thin Man‘s William Powell stars as a charming jailbird on the run from the gallows\, while the effervescent Kay Francis is a terminally ill woman clinging to the last sparks of life—and doing it in style in a succession of glimmering Orry-Kelly gowns! The two meet over Paradise cocktails in Hong Kong and fall in love aboard a transpacific ocean liner bound for San Francisco. What sounds on paper like a tearjerker is\, in director Tay Garnett’s hands\, a boozy\, bubbly comedy featuring a sloppy drunkard (Frank McHugh)\, a fake countess (Aline MacMahon)\, a lovestruck policeman (Warren Hymer)\, and a seemingly endless supply of potent potables. The last of seven features Powell and Francis made together\, One Way Passage is pure delight and an essential entry in our August-long “I’m On a Boat” series. \n\n\n\nPlus we’re delighted to bring you a bonus nautical treat before the feature\, the classic Walt Disney short Steamboat Willie featuring [generic public domain rodent creature]! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nWhen a screening is sold out\, we open a waitlist 30 minutes before showtime. SUMMARY:TITANIC (1997) presented with "VHS Break" intermission
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“As colossal as the ship itself… the stuff of magic.” – Awards Daily \n\n\n\nThe ground-breaking epic that enraptured a generation\, Titanic is blockbuster filmmaking at its most irresistible. Meticulously recreating every detail of the eponymous cruise liner\, from the Grand Staircase to the silverware\, director James Cameron’s romance-cum-disaster movie immerses us in the luxury of that ill-fated voyage while investing the audience in a sweeping\, inter-class love story that appeals to the inner Marxist in all of us. Viscerally emotional\, chock-full of iconic moments\, and set to the most unabashedly bombastic love theme this side of Dr. Zhivago\, Titanic is one of the most successful blockbusters of all time for a reason: It’s just that damn good. \n\n\n\nTo give you the full double-VHS nostalgia experience\, we are presenting Titanic with an intermission at the exact moment when you would have had to switch tapes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Alfred Hitchcock's most underrated thriller LIFEBOAT (1944)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Tense! Gripping! Ranks among [Hitchcock’s] most audacious and successful technical experiments in suspense.” – Empire \n\n\n\nIf you thought Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window and Rope (both of which limit the action to a single apartment) were claustrophobic\, then prepare yourself for Lifeboat\, a white-knuckle tale of suspense that takes place entirely within the crowded confines of its titular vessel. Adapted from a WWII story by John Steinbeck\, Lifeboat packs nine wildly diverse survivors into a dinghy—eight shipwrecked Americans and Brits and one German U-Boat captain—and allows the simmering tensions to boil over into an intense drama that explores the deep fissures within Allied society while asking difficult moral questions about what is required to win a war. Frequently cited by critics as one of Hitchcock’s most unfairly neglected works\, Lifeboat earned Hitchcock one of five Oscar nominations for Best Director and remains a marvelous showcase of the maestro’s technical mastery\, a meticulously constructed works that wrings every ounce of suspense out of its incredibly limited setting. Plus\, be sure to keep an eye out for Hitchcock’s most ingenious cameo appearance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Werner Herzog's FITZCARRALDO (1982)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the great visions of the cinema\, and one of the great follies. One would not have been possible without the other.” – Roger Ebert \n\n\n\nWerner Herzog is the reigning champ of impossible real-life adventures undertaken in the name of cinema. And this masterpiece is the epic flipside to Aguirre: The Wrath of God — a backbreaking epic that ecstatically treads the line between a portrait of madness and a genuine expression of maniacal obsession. Fitzcarraldo casts Herzog’s muse (and of the true madmen of cinematic acting) Klaus Kinski\, as the real-life South American rubber baron Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald\, who pursued a crazed\, quixotic mission to establish an opera house in the Peruvian jungle. But construction can can only be accomplished by hauling a gigantic river boat over a mountain. No special effects here — this is the real deal\, with the impossible results executed before your eyes. Cited by Akira Kurosawa as one of his favorite films\, Fitzcarraldo remains Herzog’s most quintessential vision\, a work of mad hubris in the service of ecstatic truth or\, as Herzog would bluntly call it\, a “conquest of the useless.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:ANACONDA (1997) w/ scary snakes pre-show @ 6 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The perfect good bad movie… the platonic ideal of a mid-’90s studio thriller” – The Ringer \n\n\n\nA pulpy jungle thriller that’s in on its own joke\, Anaconda is the kind of movie you yearn for every time you roll the dice on some dodgy Tubi movie called something like Sharknadopocalypse. It’s lean\, it’s mean\, it’s winking (but not overly so)\, and it delivers the damn goods! Starring Jennifer Lopez\, fresh off the buzz of Selena\, as the head of a documentary crew who find themselves cruising down the Amazon on a river barge pursued by one big-ass snake\, Anaconda combines some legit location shooting with delicious practical effects\, taut tension\, epic payoffs\, and one of the most gloriously unhinged performances in Hollywood history. The titular snake may devour its victims\, but it’s no match for Jon Voight absolutely inhaling the scenery as a villainous snake poacher\, complete with “Kabuki-like facial expressions and Paraguay-by-way-of-Yonkers accent” (The Ringer). SUMMARY:Chris Elliott's surreal cult comedy CABIN BOY (1994)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Extremely weird\, and certainly not for everyone. Yet very\, very brilliant in its own strange way.” – New Times \n\n\n\nA cult classic for fancy lads everywhere\, Cabin Boy was met with a frothy blend of confusion and hostility upon first release but has aged like a fine flagon of wine. \n\n\n\nFrom Chris Elliott and Adam Resnick\, co-creators of the influential deconstructed sitcom Get a Life\, Cabin Boy is one of the most surreal comedies ever released by a major Hollywood studio. After graduating from finishing school as a well-bred “Fancy Lad\,” Nathanial Mayweather (Elliott) prepares for a trip to Hawaii. But his plans are dashed when he mistakenly boards The Filthy Whore\, a fishing boat manned by a ragtag crew of salty shipmates\, and soon becomes the vessel’s hapless Cabin Boy. On his journey\, he woos the feisty but beautiful Trina (Melora Walters) and encounters a host of eye-rubbing curiosities including an amiable shark man\, a savage ice monster\, a tobacco-chewing cupcake\, and a six-armed seductress (Ann Magnuson) who relieves Nathanial of his virginity\, much to the displeasure of her 30-foot salesman husband (Mike Starr). \n\n\n\nInspired by classic seafaring yarns like Captains Courageous\, Cabin Boy has grown in reputation over the years as a truly offbeat cult comedy-fantasy with Ray Harryhausen-like special effects\, a hilariously oddball performance by Elliott\, and a treasure chest of eccentric supporting players including Brian Doyle-Murray\, Brion James\, James Gammon\, Andy Richter and Russ Tamblyn\, plus a seminal cameo by Elliott and Resnick’s old boss David Letterman as an antagonistic sock-monkey vendor. \n\n\n\nCome out early for a Chris Elliott pre-show beginning at 6:30 pm! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:MIAMI VICE (2006) -- 20th anniversary screening w/ Moody Rock pre-show
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Miami Vice looks and moves like no other movie. It was shot in large part on grainy handheld digital video\, which lends the action a sense of immediacy. Though its technology has become outdated\, Miami Vice still feels new and different.” – Ignatiy Vishnevetsky\, The A.V. Club \n\n\n\nMichael Mann’s oft-maligned masterpiece Miami Vice retools the glossy 1980s series into a moody\, achingly romantic thriller that captured the look and feel of the mid aughts\, even as audiences and critics at the time of its release largely rejected the film for its smudgy digital textures and murky moral ambiguities. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx anchor a terse\, emotionally raw undercover cop drama that takes us through Miami’s cartel-dominated underbelly (and across the Florida Strait for some Mojitos)\, while Mann and cinematographer Dion Beebe paint the scenery with dancing digital pixels. The nocturnal heat of South Florida has never felt so wonderfully oppressive as it does during the film’s grainy nighttime action. Whether or not you’re a convert\, Miami Vice\, now 20 years young\, deserves another look on the big screen. \n\n\n\nBefore the film\, we’ll play tribute to the movie and show’s iconically sulky soundtrack with a Moody Rock pre-show starting at 6 pm. (Is this just an excuse to rock some Phil Collins? Maybe.) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:TITANIC 666 (2022) -- Friday Night WTF -- FREE!
DESCRIPTION:Friday Night WTF screenings are cheap\, weird\, and out of control! Cult trashterpieces\, so-bad-they’re-good crapfests\, movies that make you ask “What the hell am I watching?!” — we’ve got ’em all on Friday night. \n\n\n\n“Absolutely awful. Loved every second of it!” – brandon nash\, Letterboxd \n\n\n\nHave you ever wondered\, what if the Titanic had a bunch of spooky ghosts on board? No?You’ve never wondered that? Well\, that’s okay\, we think you’ll still enjoy this 100% FREE screening of this infamously craptacular horror-disaster hybrid anyway! \n\n\n\nWhen luxury liner Titanic 666 (yes\, that’s the actual name of the boat in this movie) sets sail\, a motley crew of influencers\, skeptics\, and a disgraced priest discover the ship may be haunted by the ghosts of the original victims of the Titanic disaster. Possessed deckhands\, satanic karaoke\, and a very persistent iceberg of doom turn the voyage into a floating funhouse that will make you laugh and cringe in equal measure. Leave your dignity at home or risk it sinking to the ocean floor as you endure this spectacularly stupid disasterpiece from the people who gave us the equally misguided\, though way less fun\, Titanic 2. \n\n\n\nThis screening is 100% FREE. SUMMARY:Legendary fantasy-adventure extravaganza JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (1963)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Everyone loves it. It belongs on a short list of movies that are almost guaranteed to please everyone in any given audience\, no matter how old or young they are or what culture they were raised in.” – Matt Zoller-Seitz\, RogerEbert.com \n\n\n\nOne of the greatest\, most thrilling adventure movies of all time\, Jason and the Argonauts is pure cinematic joy. Based on the epic poem from Ancient Greece\, The Argonautica\, the film tells the tale of Jason (Todd Armstrong)\, son of a murdered King\, who is diverted from ascending the throne by his search for the Golden Fleece\, which can bring peace to his kingdom. A rip-roaring\, sea-faring fantasy-adventure\, Jason and the Argonauts is best known (and will forever be loved) for containing some of animator Ray Harryhausen’s most legendary effects: the multi-headed hydra\, the giant bronze statue come to life\, the bird-monster Harpies\, and of course\, the sword-wielding skeleton warriors. For fans of stop-motion\, this film is basically uncut heroin. Or\, as Tom Hanks perhaps more elegantly put it\, “Some say Casablanca or Citizen Kane – I say that Jason and the Argonauts is the greatest film ever made.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU (2004) w/ Jacques Cousteau pre-show
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Still one of Wes Anderson’s funniest and most poignant movies\, as well as a love letter to his favorite muse: Bill Murray… The Life Aquatic is Wes Anderson’s most underrated movie.” – Den of Geek \n\n\n\nA wildly original adventure-comedy\, The Life Aquatic was the film that definitively proved that Wes Anderson exclusively makes Wes Anderson movies\, and if you don’t like it…that’s your problem. Bill Murray heads a typically eclectic ensemble cast as internationally famous oceanographer Steve Zissou\, who sets sail aboard the R.V. Belafonte on an expedition to hunt down the mysterious\, elusive\, possibly nonexistent Jaguar Shark that killed Zissou’s partner. The motley crew includes Owen Wilson as a sweet-natured airline pilot\, Cate Blanchett as a pregnant journalist\, Anjelica Huston as Zissou’s estranged wife\, Jeff Goldblum as her new lover\, and (our favorite) Willem Dafoe as Zissou’s obsequious German first mate. Shot in eye-popping Cinemascope\, The Life Aquatic is packed with stop-motion sea life\, brilliant “dollhouse” cutaways of the Belafonte\, hilarious gags\, and interstitial samba covers of Bowie classics courtesy of Brazilian musician Seu Jorge\, but underneath it all is a gorgeously poignant sense of yearning and loss. Hey\, this is a Wes Anderson movie\, after all. \n\n\n\nBefore the film\, we’ll pay tribute to the core inspiration for The Life Aquatic\, oceanographer-cum-filmmaker Jacques Cousteau with a pre-show beginning at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Karel Zeman's eye-popping INVENTION FOR DESTRUCTION (1958) w/ Georges Méliès' "The Impossible Voyage"
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The spectacular blend of animation\, artful sets\, mattes and live action… makes this whimsical and funny fairy-tale so enjoyable.” – Scifist \n\n\n\nBrilliant Czech animator Karel Zeman’s eye-popping spectacle is like a Victorian illustration come to life. Inspired by the romantic fantasy novels Jules Verne\, Invention for Destruction faithfully recreates the line engraving style of the pictures in the original editions of Verne’s work. Combining live actors with drawn animation\, cutouts\, matte paintings\, miniatures\, stop-motion\, and meticulously detailed horizontal line filters\, Zeman produced one of the most astoundingly original works in cinema. Original released in the US as The Fabulous World of Jules Verne\, Invention for Destruction not only went on to become the most successful Czech film in history\, it also basically invented steampunk. \n\n\n\nBut that’s not all! We’ve got some more Verne-inspired fantasia for you in the form of silent maestro Georges Méliès’ brilliant 1904 short The Impossible Voyage\, playing immediately before the feature. Based on Verne’s 1882 play Journey Through the Impossible\, this short is a fantastic showcase for Méliès’ wildly imaginative visual bravado. \n\n\n\nOTHER WORLDS brings you to strange new realms through science fiction and fantasy. Featuring classics\, hidden gems\, and cult favorites\, this series offers a mind-bending retreat from our mundane reality. SUMMARY:DELIVERANCE (1972)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A haunting\, nightmarish vision.” – Time Out \n\n\n\n“This is the weekend they didn’t play golf\,” reads the ominously jocular tagline for director John Boorman’s legendarily unsettling 1972 film\, which stands as one of the most inspired combinations of filmmaker and source material in cinematic history. Based on James Dickey’s novel\, Deliverance follows a group of Atlanta businessmen who take a canoe trip through the remote backwoods of North Georgia. What happens next has lost little of its power to shock\, despite years of imitations and parodies. Boorman is in full command of his material here\, attaching a haunting\, mythic quality to the starkness of Dickey’s story. Combined with Vilmos Zsigmond’s moody camerawork and the sparse banjo-driven score\, the director gives his locations a heightened\, haunting quality. As gripping as the work behind the camera is though\, the film wouldn’t have nearly the kick it does without the central performances by Jon Voight\, Burt Reynolds\, Ronny Cox\, and especially Ned Beatty\, who skews the already slippery moral compass further by not playing his character as particularly sympathetic\, even in the wake of the movie’s most infamous scene. A surprise box office smash\, Deliverance was nominated for three Academy Awards\, including Best Picture\, losing out to The Godfather. The film still hits a primal nerve early on and then masterfully keeps on digging\, transforming its story of horror into something primal\, grasping\, and timeless. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:AMSTERDAMNED (1988) -- "Fast\, Gory\, Immensely Entertaining"
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A fast\, gory\, immensely entertaining horror flick that cleverly crosses Dirty Harry with Jaws!” – The Guardian \n\n\n\nDown in the murky depths of Amsterdam’s famous canals lurks a murderous predator. Surfacing at night\, he kills at random and disappears without a trace. As the bodies begin to pile up and mass hysteria envelopes the city\, Detective Eric Visser (Huub Stapel) is assigned to head the investigation. With only the escalating number of victims to go on\, Visser pursues his quarry with a vengeance\, unaware that his beautiful new girlfriend (Monique van de Ven) may be the mysterious killer’s next victim. Highlighted by an explosive speedboat chase through the city’s narrow canals\, Amsterdamned combines the stabby murder-mystery pleasures of a giallo\, the subaquatic thrills of Jaws\, and the explosive pyrotechnics of a John Woo actioner into a lean\, mean slice of Eurosleaze! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND (1996) -- 30th anniversary screening w/ Muppet pre-show
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A pleasure from start to finish\, Muppet Treasure Island orchestrates people\, puppets\, shameless gags and sublimely ridiculous production numbers to wryly rework Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic kids’ tale.” – LA Weekly \n\n\n\nNo one adapts literary classics like the Muppets! Just as fun\, full of life\, and surprisingly faithful to its source material as The Muppet Christmas Carol\, Muppet Treasure Island pits Kermit the Frog’s noble Captain Smollett against a deliciously campy Tim Curry as the charming buccaneer Long John Silver\, and all your Muppet favorites are along for journey. Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s swashbuckling tale of salty dogs and pirate’s gold\, this musical-comedy-action-adventure is packed with catchy sea shanties\, raucous comedy\, and Mr. Bimbo\, the man who lives inside Fozzie Bear’s finger. Come celebrate 30 years of high-seas hilarity with this anniversary screening! \n\n\n\nPlus\, come out early for a Muppet pre-show starting at 1:30 pm\, featuring funny moments from your favorite felt friends. SUMMARY:Homer's Odyssey as you've never seen it before... NOSTOS: THE RETURN (1989) presented by Lost in the Arthouse
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLOST IN THE ARTHOUSE is a monthly series hosted by Arkadin co-owner Keith Watson that takes you to hidden corners of filmdom far from Hollywood. From must-see classics to obscurities waiting to be discovered\, these films stand at cinema’s bleeding edge. \n\n\n\n“A poetry of lived quotidian experience that gradually becomes an epic… [Nostos] is simply beautiful. A masterpiece.” – L’Unità \n\n\n\nWhile Christopher Nolan has given us the bombastic big-budget version of The Odyssey\, Italian filmmaker Franco Piavoli’s Nostos: The Return sits at the opposite end of the cinematic spectrum\, a gorgeous\, lyrical meditation on humankind’s relationship to nature and its thirst for exploration that boils Homer’s epic down to a raw\, timeless essence. Filmed in the Mediterranean and told in an imaginary proto-language drawn from Ancient Greek\, Latin\, and Sanskrit\, Nostos transports the viewer back to the dawn of civilization\, reimagining Odysseus’s journey not as an action-adventure yarn but as a journey of the soul. Told with images of haunting power in a style Piavoli described as “symphonic” rather than the “theatrical” mode favored by conventional narrative cinema\, Nostos is\, in its transcendent beauty and cosmic scope\, just as epic as Nolan’s blockbuster version. Rarely screened in the U.S.\, this largely unknown masterpiece of world cinema is crying out for discovery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person.
