Chinese Interpol agent Chun-Li seeks the help of American Air Force Captain Guile to infiltrate the criminal organization Shadowlaw\, run by leader M. Bison and his brutal bodyguards Balrog\, Vega and Sagat. Meanwhile\, Japanese martial artist Ryu travels the world seeking a challenger worthy of competition\, since his American training partner Ken Masters has left to start a life with his girlfriend\, Eliza. Soon M. Bison discovers the masterful skills of Ryu and Ken from observing a series of street fights and aims to force the champions to join his criminal syndicate through hypnosis. \n\n\n\nStreet Fighter II: The Animated Movie originally had a limited theatrical release in August of 1994 and doubled as promotion for Street Fighter (1994)\, the live-action film also based on the video game starring Jean-Claude Van Damme that was released in December of that year. Unlike the Hollywood film that was almost immediately panned as one of the worst video game movies ever made\, the Japanese anime film has garnered a devoted following for its accuracy to the source material and its fast-paced animated battles with the colorful cast of fighters\, including Indian yoga master Dhalsim\, Russian wrestler Zangief\, Bruce Lee-knockoff Fei Long\, as well Dee Jay\, T. Hawk Cammy and the Brazilian monster Blanka. Every day on her way to the summer camp bus\, 11-year-old Lonnie Sloan (Sarah Boyd) passes a group of neighborhood kids engaged in some mischief that she\, with her upper-class upbringing\, can scarcely fathom. On a morning like any other she encounters the streetwise Karen (Rainbow Harvest)\, who talks sheltered Lonnie into playing hooky and takes her out of her brownstone bubble and into a blue collar world full of shoplifting and Catholicism. It’s certainly one of the most intimate and unrelenting explorations of human depravity ever captured onscreen. Filmed primarily in intense close-ups that practically burrow into its subject’s flesh\, Caniba is a portrait of the notorious criminal Issei Sagawa\, who\, as a 32-year-old student at the Sorbonne in Paris\, murdered his Dutch classmate\, Renée Hartevelt\, and began eating her body. Sagawa was convicted of his crimes in France\, but through some legal loopholes\, he soon was allowed to return back to his home country of Japan where he lived for decades as a free man\, making his living by writing novels\, drawing manga\, and appearing in innumerable documentaries and sexploitation films in which he reenacted his crime.  \n\n\n\nDirectors Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor explore the outer limits of human behavior through Sagawa’s mysterious relationship with his brother. In a twist reminiscent of Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb\, it turns out Sagawa may not be the most disturbed person in his own family. Disturbing\, darkly funny\, and completely unforgettable\, Caniba provides an uncomfortable intimacy with a man most would regard as a monster\, one who has transgressed the fundamental taboo.
