The internationally renowned Brazilian brought her unusual style of kiddie-music-mania to the US with a short-lived\, syndicated variety show in 1993. Outside of her TV (and singing) career\, she starred in an informal series of five wacky comedic films alongside the popular sketch troupe\, Os Trapalhões\, loosely translated as The Bumblers. Well STLVS is bringing a little bit of everything together in August with a few episodes of her eponymous kids show\, AND a rare screening of the sci-fi\, comedy mashup film A PRINCESA XUXA E OS TRAPALHOES (1989)! \n\n\n\nThe fun starts at 6:30pm on the dot\, continues with the feature at around 7pm\, and goes on until no one can handle another minute of the blonde\, Brazilian bombshell! Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nCharlie Sheen stars as a wrongly-convicted prison escapee named Jack Hammond who accidentally kidnaps wealthy heiress Natalie Voss (Kristy Swanson) while trying to flee the police in the underrated action comedy film The Chase (1994). As Jack tries to escape down a southern California highway to Mexico\, an elaborate car chase unfolds fueled by a manic tabloid reporter trying desperately to capture the story. Soon Jack is being pursued by cops being filmed for a documentary\, crazed paparazzi and bonehead vigilantes looking to be TV stars. \n\n\n\nThe Chase is nearly all car chase for its entire run time. It was a modest success during its original release in March 1994\, capitalizing on the popularity of the action and car chase genres during the decade. The soundtrack features high-adrenaline tracks from SoCal punk bands NOFX\, The Offspring\, Bad Religion and Rollins Band\, and is a great encapsulation of ’94 punk right as it was breaking into the mainstream.  \n\n\n\nCoincidentally\, the film gained renewed attention later that year when O.J. SUMMARY:$3 MYSTERY MOVIE (Keith's Birthday Edition): A Bizarre Family-Friendly Black Comedy
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the last Monday of every month\, Arkadin chooses an underseen deep cut to inflict upon an unwitting audience. Though the genre and tone may change\, the price always remains the same: three measly bucks. You can’t afford not to get yourself a ticket!  \n\n\n\nIt’s Keith’s 39th birthday\, and he’s feeling a little self-indulgent\, so this month’s selection is a blast from his own personal past: his very favorite film when he was 9 years old. An ostensibly family-friendly comedy\, this film is so perversely mean-spirited it could only have come from those halcyon days of questionable children’s entertainment: the nineties! With dashes of horror\, fantasy\, action\, and surprisingly harrowing family drama plus a heaping dose of Zucker-Abrahams-and-Zucker-style parody\, this is truly a film for no one. But\, through constant premium-cable daytime rotation it found a fan in one troubled young boy. Perhaps that’s not so surprising because while its commercial prospects may have been dubious\, this is a film that truly commits to a genuinely dark\, sardonic satire of American pop culture. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nShredder Orpheus (1989) is a low-budget reimagining of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice presented as a post-apocalyptic skateboard rock opera. Orpheus (played by director Robert McGinley) is a local rock star that must descend to the underworld on a skateboard-from-hell to rescue his kidnapped wife and stop Hades from broadcasting a hypnotic message from the Devil’s “Euthanasia TV Network” that could destroy the world. Shredder Orpheus also captures a rare acting performance by legendary spoken-word poet Steven Jesse Bernstein (known as Seattle’s Williams S. Burroughs) who narrates the story as well.  \n\n\n\nThe film was shot in Seattle\, Washington without obtaining permits for many of its locations. It had a one-night-only premiere at Seattle’s Neptune Theater on Halloween of 1989\, before it later gained a cult following for its limited VHS release. DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForbidden Hollywood is a monthly series hosted by STL film critic Katie Carter celebrating the Pre-Code films of the early 1930s\, when movies were wild\, racy\, transgressive\, and tons of fun. \n\n\n\nConsidered one of the first— if not the first— women in prison movies\, 1933’s Ladies They Talk About stars a perfectly cast Barbara Stanwyck as Nan Taylor\, the hardboiled member of a gang of bank robbers who ends up taking the rap for a job and ending up serving time in San Quentin. While her will they/won’t they romance with radio evangelist David Slade (Preston Foster) is contrived\, the interactions between the female inmates provide a wildly entertaining and illuminating glimpse at clashing feminine emotions. Based on a play by Dorothy Mackaye\, inspired by her own stint in San Quentin for conspiring to coverup the death of her husband\, Ladies They Talk About contains all the ingredients to make it a prototype of what would become a popular exploitation subgenre once the Production Code disintegrated in the 1960s\, from cat fights and queer overtones to offbeat musical interludes and frank discussions of sex and the inmates’ misdemeanors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person.
