SUMMARY:DOPE (2015) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nIn Dope (2015)\, Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is a nerdy kid trying to survive high school in “The Bottoms” a tough neighborhood in Inglewood\, California. Malcolm is obsessed with ’90s hip hop and fashion and dreams of going to Harvard University after high school. When Malcolm and his two best friends\, Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons)\, get an invite to an underground party by the local drug dealer Dom (A$AP Rocky) their lives get turned upside down when they mistakenly take home a backpack full of drugs.   \n\n\n\nThis low budget coming-of-age film was released in summer 2015\, and though it was critically-praised\, it was mostly overlooked during an era of comic book blockbuster mania. Dope\, directed by Rick Famuyiwa\, is an under-seen gem that captures the essence of classic John Hughes teen dramas like The Breakfast Club mixed with the grit of John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood but for a Gen Z audience. The film features the debut acting role of Shameik Moore\, as well as a standout performance from Zoë Kravitz\, narration from Forest Whitaker\, original songs by Pharrell\, and a cameo from Blake Anderson of Workaholics. Dope also features a time-capsule subplot involving the rise of Bitcoin just as it was beginning to enter mainstream usage.   \n\n\n\nA ’90s Hip Hop Preshow will start at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. We follow the MPAA rating guidelines for all other films.\n\n\n\nTickets can be purchased using the BUY TICKETS link above. Upon ordering\, you will receive a confirmation email from Square. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the show at the concession counter.\n\n\n\nIf you’ve purchased advance tickets\, when you arrive\, please give your name at the concession counter to check in. \n\n\n\nTickets are returnable by sending a request through the contact form located on our About Us page prior to showtime.\n\n\n\nWhen an event is sold out\, we reserve the right to release open seats to customers on the waitlist. If you have a pre-purchased ticket and arrive late and there is no seat for you\, your ticket will be refunded.\n\n\n\nAll screenings are held in our indoor theater unless indicated otherwise in the event description above.\n\n\n\nPlease respect your fellow movie-goers by remaining quiet and refraining from using your cell phone throughout the screening.

SUMMARY:THE BLACKENING (2022) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“An unapologetically Black comedy through and through\, it maintains its wit and bite to the very end\, boastfully serving audiences an hilarious film we didn’t know we needed.” – Peyton Robinson\, RogerEbert.com \n\n\n\nWhen confronted with a diabolical board game in the cabin they’ve rented to celebrate Juneteenth\, a crew of old college friends realize they’re stuck in a slasher flick. Armed with their skills\, their wits\, and their knowledge of the genre\, they duke it out ‘til dawn against a legion of stock horror villains determined to take them out one by one. \n\n\n\nA Cabin in the Woods for the Jordan Peele era\, The Blackening sets the record straight on decades of misrepresentation\, while outshining all of its contemporaries with its razor-sharp satirical wit. A loving nod to those who know all the Black horror tropes\, here’s a late-night survival flick in which every character is an audience surrogate\, pissed to find themselves trapped in such a corny premise\, and well aware of what it’ll take to make it through the night. A loving riposte to horror’s most glaring missteps\, The Blackening spins the sins of the genre into one of the most clever horror comedies ever made\, while serving as a celebration of Black joy\, unity\, Rap Snacks\, and not reneging in Spades. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE WOLF HOUSE (2018) w/ creepy stop-motion pre-show
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A mind-blowing haunted house… Directors Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León mingle classic European fairytales in a potpourri of magical notes laden in eeriness… In both concept and execution\, The Wolf House will render you awestruck.” – Carlos Aguilar\, TheWrap \n\n\n\nOne of the most singular and unsettling animated films ever made\, THE WOLF HOUSE is inspired by the real-life case of Colonia Dignidad\, a remote Chilean Nazi sect founded after WWII. Painstakingly animated by Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León\, this contemporary cult animation classic is a twisted fairy tale\, combining stop-motion and traditional animation in a dark kaleidoscopic fantasia\, photographed to appear as one continuous shot. Maria\, a young woman\, finds refuge in a house in the south of Chile after escaping from a sect of German religious fanatics. Two pigs\, the only occupants of the house\, welcome her inside. The ever-shifting universe of the house reacts to Maria’s feelings as the animals transform slowly into humans and the house becomes a nightmarish world unto itself. \n\n\n\nCome out for a creepy stop-motion pre-show\, beginning at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\nEach month\, DRAWN VISIONS presents an outré gem from the wild\, wonderful world of animation. Focusing on the strange\, the underseen\, and the unclassifiable\, this series proves cartoons aren’t just for kids\, they’re for total freaks too! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:F.W. Murnau's JOURNEY INTO THE NIGHT (1921) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\n“Framed by the hauntingly beautiful landscapes of the production\, it leaves an indelible mark on the soul of the viewer.” – Dbcult \n\n\n\nThe earliest surviving film by F. W. Murnau\, JOURNEY INTO THE NIGHT provides a stunning showcase for the German Expressionist maestro’s innovative style. The film gives a scintillating representation of Murnau’s highly expressive lighting techniques\, while the plot—an eminent physician comes under the spell of an unscrupulous dancer—finds echoes in Murnau’s later masterpiece Sunrise. Conrad Veidt appears in a supporting role as a sinister painter\, whose entrance eerily presages Nosferatu. “This is hypnotic\, immersive cinema.” (David Bordwell) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:John Waters' HAIRSPRAY (1988) presented by Girlhood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGirlhood is a semi-regular series hosted by Arkadin co-owner Sarah Baraba that spotlights stories of sisterhood on the silver screen. \n\n\n\n“Genuinely subversive!” – Sight & Sound \n\n\n\nTracy Turnblad has big dreams of dancing on TV and she’s not going to 1960s conventional beauty standards get in her way. Overnight she becomes the queen of The Corny Collins Show and leads the charge of challenging the station’s stance on racial segregation. In the process she’s stealing boyfriends\, pissing off parents and pushing her fellow teens to embrace their own individuality. \n\n\n\nIn 1988 John Waters softened his provocative edge just enough to create this beloved cult classic that has resonated with audiences for decades and inspired a Broadway musical. HAIRSPRAY is endlessly quotable\, mesmerizingly retro and stacked with a cast that includes Ricki Lake\, Divine\, Sonny Bono\, Debbie Harry\, Jerry Stiller andVitamin C! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:INVADERS FROM MARS (1953) -- 4K Restoration!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Achieves a brilliant nightmarish quality by brooding atmosphere and imagery… one of the most unusual films of the fifties.” – The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction Movies \n\n\n\nFROM OUT OF SPACE… CAME HORDES OF GREEN MONSTERS!!\n\n\n\nIn the early 1950s\, Cold War tensions and the burgeoning space race created a heady mix of paranoia and unbridled creativity as filmmakers speculated as to the marvels—and horrors—that lay beyond the stars. Among those leading the charge\, William Cameron Menzies’ INVADERS FROM MARS terrified audiences upon its release in 1953 with its chilling vision of an insidious alien attack on small-town Americana. As the aliens make a dad turn against his own son\, it’s the perfect film for Father’s Day! \n\n\n\nOn a dark and stormy night\, a young boy\, David McLean (Jimmy Hunt\, Pitfall)\, observes what appears to be a flying saucer crash-landing in his town. Shortly thereafter\, the grown-ups—including his own parents—begin acting decidedly strangely. Convinced there’s a link between this epidemic of bizarre behavior and what he witnessed that night\, David turns to local health official Dr. Blake (Helena Carter) for help. But can these two unlikely heroes\, together with astronomer Dr. Kelston (Arthur Franz)\, withstand the might of a full-blown invasion from outer space? \n\n\n\nA landmark in sci-fi cinema\, Invaders from Mars inspired filmmakers as wide-ranging as Don Coscarelli (Phantasm)\, Brad Bird (The Iron Giant) and John Carpenter (The Thing). Fully restored for its 70th anniversary\, this trend-setting Atom Age classic unleashes its spine-tingling terror! \n\n\n\nOTHER WORLDS brings you to strange new realms through science fiction and fantasy. Featuring classics\, hidden gems\, and cult favorites\, this series offers a mind-bending retreat from our mundane reality. SUMMARY:MĀRAMA (2026) - new anti-colonialist gothic folk horror
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE! [Uses] gothic horror to tell a breathtaking\, heart-wrenching tale of self-discovery and retribution.” – The Blogging Banshee \n\n\n\n1859. When a young Māori woman (Ariāna Osborne\, in a ferocious performance) is summoned from New Zealand to England\, she uncovers a horrific colonial heritage\, which she faces with vengeful fury. Combining folk horror dread and haunted house chills\, MĀRAMA may be a genre unto itself—what first-time director Taratoa Stappard has called “Māori gothic horror.” Infused with traditional folklore from Aotearoa and a righteous hatred of English colonial devastation\, MĀRAMA is an “eerie and disquieting bit of gothic horror delivered in a beautifully crafted\, exquisitely rendered package” (The Last Thing I See). \n\n\n\nEach month\, Arkadin presents a selection of FOLK HORROR AROUND THE WORLD\, creepy folktales from all corner of the globe to give you the Sunday scaries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING…\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Will shake you to your core” \n\n\n\n\nStappard pulls threads from a long history of trauma…to create a story that will shake you to your core. \n\n\n\n\n\n★ ★ ★ ★ ★ \n\n\n\nBee Delores\, B-Sides & Badlands \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Pitch-perfect” \n\n\n\n\nA pitch-perfect gothic exploration of colonialism and reclaimed identity. \n\n\n\n\n\n★ ★ ★ ★ ½ \n\n\n\nCaitlyn Downs\, ScaredSheepless \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Impressive” \n\n\n\n\nOne of the most impressive films of the year to date. \n\n\n\n\n\n★ ★ ★ ★ ★ \n\n\n\nJennie Kermode\, Eye on Film \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person.
