SUMMARY:Irish Folk Horror FRÉWAKA (2024) -- 𝔉𝔬𝔩𝔨 ℌ𝔬𝔯𝔯𝔬𝔯 𝔄𝔯𝔬𝔲𝔫𝔡 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔚𝔬𝔯𝔩𝔡
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“It’s the mythical and political Irish context of “Fréwaka” that makes it stick\, as it draws on lingering national guilt over the iniquities of the Magdalene laundries\, and twists deep-seated folk imagery into uncanny nightmare fuel.” – Variety \n\n\n\nGet ready for St. Patty’s Day with this terrifying slice of folk horror madness imported straight from the Emerald Isle. Written and director by Aislinn Clarke\, FRÉWAKA incorporates Celtic folklore\, generational trauma and the malfeasance of the Catholic Church into an atmospheric haunted-house tale infused with occult horror and told primarily in the Irish language. The film follows home care worker Shoo (Clare Monnelly)\, who\, haunted by a personal tragedy\, leaves her pregnant girlfriend to care for Peig (Bríd Ní Neachtain)\, a cantankerous old woman who has incarcerated herself in a big house on the edge of a remote village. Peig fears the neighbors as much as she fears na sídhe—sinister entities whom she believes abducted her on her wedding night decades earlier. As the two develop a deep connection\, Shoo is infected by the old woman’s paranoia\, rituals\, and superstitions\, eventually confronting the horrors of her own past. With echoes of the insular traditionalism of Midsommar and the devilish goat figure of The Witch\, Clarke’s haunting folk is deftly woven through with contemporary concerns about mental health\, inherited trauma\, and the fraught realm of motherhood. \n\n\n\nIn Irish and English\, with English subtitles. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening in Arkadin’s April 2026 Sunday Series on WOMEN DIRECTORS\, featuring a selection of unusual\, rarely screened works from female filmmakers. \n\n\n\nEach month\, Arkadin presents a selection of FOLK HORROR AROUND THE WORLD\, creepy folktales from all corner of the globe to give you the Sunday scaries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Agnès Varda's ONE SINGS\, THE OTHER DOESN'T (1977) presented by Girlhood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGirlhood is a semi-regular series hosted by Arkadin co-owner Sarah Baraba that spotlights stories of sisterhood on the silver screen. \n\n\n\n“The film\, a sort-of musical about the decade-spanning friendship between two women… [is] a gift of hope for future generations of women.” – Reverse Shot \n\n\n\nIn the early 1960s in Paris\, two young women become friends. Pomme is an aspiring singer. Suzanne is a pregnant country girl unable to support a third child. Pomme lends Suzanne the money for an illegal abortion\, but a sudden tragedy soon separates them. Ten years later\, they reunite at a demonstration and pledge to keep in touch via postcard\, as each of their lives is irrevocably changed by the women’s liberation movement. A buoyant hymn to sisterly solidarity rooted in the hard-won victories of a generation of women\, One Sings\, the Other Doesn’t is one of Agnès Varda’s warmest and most politically trenchant films\, a feminist musical for the ages. \n\n\n\nA portion of this event’s proceeds will be donated to Missouri Abortion Fund. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:$3 MONDAY MYSTERY MOVIE: A Hilarious Rarely Screened Utterly Unique Cult Comedy
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the last Monday of every month\, Arkadin chooses an underseen deep cut to inflict upon an unwitting audience. SUMMARY:THE SPIRIT OF BEEHIVE (1973) ᴘʀᴇꜱᴇɴᴛᴇᴅ ʙʏ ʟᴏꜱᴛ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴀʀᴛʜᴏᴜꜱᴇ
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLOST IN THE ARTHOUSE is a monthly series hosted by Arkadin co-owner Keith Watson that takes you to hidden corners of filmdom far from Hollywood. From must-see classics to obscurities waiting to be discovered\, these films stand at cinema’s bleeding edge. \n\n\n\n“Close to magic. It is one of the most beautiful and arresting films ever made in Spain\, or anywhere.” – The Guardian \n\n\n\nWidely regarded as one of world cinema’s most magnificent achievements—it’s no accident that it ranked in the top 100 in Sight & Sound‘s prestigious 2022 “greatest films” poll—Victor Erice’s THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE is a spellbinding masterpiece about the immersive power of cinema. Set in a small Castilian village in 1940\, in the wake of the devastating Spanish Civil War\, six-year-old Ana (Ana Torrent\, in what is easily the most tender film performance ever given by a young child) attends a traveling movie show of the 1931 classic Frankenstein and becomes possessed by the experience of it. blurring her understanding of art\, mortality\, and violence. Produced as Franco’s long regime was nearing its end\, THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE is a bewitching portrait of a child’s haunted inner life and one of the most visually arresting movies ever made\, a work of darkly lyrical beauty with a touch of magical-realist horror. …And it also happens to be the perfect arthouse accompaniment to Arkadin’s month-long exploration of Female Frankensteins! \n\n\n\nWhy should Jessie Buckley have all the fun? We’re celebrating brides\, monsters\, mad doctors and more this month with our FEMALE FRANKENSTEINS series\, featuring thrills\, chills\, dark laughs and twisted loves\, all culminating with our screenings of the widely-acclaimed new horror-comedy DEAD LOVER! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Jane Fonda in BARBARELLA (1968)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“CHEERFUL\, KITSCH AND CAMP… [with] a succession of truly amazing fashion creations with all the confidence of a generation that thought sex was\, above all\, fun.” – Empire \n\n\n\nSlip out of your spacesuit and into something more comfortable! It’s time to join Barbarella on a series of cosmic adventures in this lavish\, lascivious Dino De Laurentiis production based on the risqué French comic book series. SUMMARY:Jan Švankmajer's ALICE (1988) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“It’s experimental\, unusual\, a little mad\, and definitely not an Alice adaptation to show the kids. Unless you want to give them nightmares for weeks.” – Joe’s Horror Reviews \n\n\n\nThe dark heart of Alice in Wonderland was never more faithfully captured than by stop-motion maestro Jan Švankmajer\, who rendered its well-worn imagery into a startling new vision. By animating an array of found items—including raw meat\, taxidermy\, porcelain dolls\, and playing cards—Švankmajer crafted a Wonderland all his own\, a haunting realm of fantastic sights and disturbing juxtapositions. Hailed as a landmark of modern animation\, Alice blends the imagination of Lewis Carroll with the grotesquerie of Joel-Peter Witkin to produce an experience like no other. A truly singular work of art\, it offers a glimpse into another world\, one of joyful terrors that cavort amidst death and decay. \n\n\n\nArrive early for a preshow of spooky stop-motion from around the world\, starting at 6pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. SUMMARY:Marlene Dietrich in queer-coded pre-code classic MOROCCO (1930)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A magnificent exploration of passion\, featuring iconic gender fluidity…This film is cinematic poetry ” – Jay Jacobson \n\n\n\nMOROCCO not only introduced Marlene Dietrich to English-speaking audiences\, the film revolutionized fashion and eroticism with the androgyny of her iconic tuxedo. Here\, Morocco isn’t a real place. It’s a sensual realm of the European imagination where wealthy hedonists mingle with adventure-seekers\, and women can escape narrowly defined social and sexual roles. Gary Cooper and Adolphe Menjou also appear in this film\, but who was looking at them? Marlene Dietrich steams up the screen in her first appearance in an American film – her second in a cycle of seven collaborations with director Josef von Sternberg. MOROCCO is a lavishly detailed\, unashamedly romantic frame-story for Dietrich’s mesmerizing musical numbers. In the film’s most heavily publicized scene\, Dietrich swaggers through a cabaret wearing a tuxedo and top hat by costume designer Travis Banton\, before kissing a female patron. Her playful gender satire catapulted women’s trousers into the fashion mainstream\, and shaped queer iconography for generations to come. It also inspired Yves Saint Laurent’s 1966 Le Smoking collection of women’s pantsuits. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\n“At the height of his beauty\, Rudolph Valentino enjoys his finest hour” – Alt Film Guide \n\n\n\nCount Rodrigo Torriani is a legendary womanizer whose playboy antics have left him flat broke. SUMMARY:KOYAANISQATSI (1983) presented by Lost in the Arthouse
\n\n\n\n“One of the most eye-opening works of art created in the late 20th century” – The Cinephile Fix \n\n\n\nAn unconventional work in every way\, Godfrey Reggio’s KOYAANISQATSI was a sensation upon its initial release and retains a cult-like following to this day. A wordless\, yet entrancing collage of Philip Glass’s hypnotic score and cinematographer Ron Fricke’s monumental imagery\, this trippy survey of the Northern Hemisphere’s rapidly changing environment shuttles viewers from one jaw-dropping vision to the next\, moving from images of untouched nature to others depicting human beings’ increasing dependence on technology. Heavily utilizing trippy time-lapse photography to suggest the frenetic pace of modern life\, KOYAANISQATSI—whose title comes from a Hopi word meaning “life out of balance”—is a plea for humanity to find some equilibrium with the fragile planet we all inhabit. Whatever you think of its hippie-ish ecological message\, the film remains one of cinema’s great transformative experiences. No one who’s seen it can ever shake its awe-inducing power. \n\n\n\nThis screening is part of Arkadin’s April 2026 series\, HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?—featuring botanical wonders\, homicidal flora\, and secret gardens for you to make your escape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Psychedelic sleaze-burger DESPERATION RISING (1989) presented by St. Louis Video Society
DESCRIPTION:SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY digs deep in its extensive archives to present the weirdest\, wildest\, most incredible VHS obscurities. Always free\, always presented by Video Society archivist James Milam! \n\n\n\nWhat if David Lynch dropped acid and remade Scarface? This is just one of thousands of questions that will not be answered while your brain is invaded by DESPERATION RISING. Starring Nick “Son of John” Cassavetes and dozens of real-life Los Angeles gang members who appear as part of a rehabilitation program\, this is the best movie on earth about a stockbroker seminar that turns into a cocaine-fueled rage war. DESPERATION RISING is filled with dad karate\, phone sex\, real sex\, cocaine\, humans exploding\, talking parrots\, Uzi battles\, more cocaine\, and rappin’ kids. This psychedelic sleaze-burger could only be better if director/star Jason Holt wrote and recorded Casio-soaked yacht rock songs with titles like “Get Ready To Rip” and “Love Blooms” for the soundtrack. SUMMARY:"Wicked\, witchy folk freak horror" ENYS MEN (2022) — 𝔉𝔬𝔩𝔨 ℌ𝔬𝔯𝔯𝔬𝔯 𝔄𝔯𝔬𝔲𝔫𝔡 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔚𝔬𝔯𝔩𝔡
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A wicked\, witchy folk freak horror… the witchy atmosphere Jenkin conjures is spine-tinglingly devilish\, the poetic manifestation of the subject’s deep grief\, ever-ambiguous and frosty\, taking on the aching melancholy of loss. The present trend of elevated horror be damned: this is how you do it.” – The Playlist \n\n\n\nENYS MEN is a mind-bending Cornish folk horror set in 1973 that unfolds on an uninhabited island off the Cornish coast. A wildlife volunteer’s (Mary Woodvine) daily observations of a rare flower take a dark turn into the strange and metaphysical as she descends into a terrifying madness that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare. Is the landscape not only alive but sentient? Shot by Jenkin on grainy 16mm color film stock and with post-synched sound\, the form feels both innovative and authentic to the period. Filmed on location around the disused tin mines of West Penwith\, it is also an ode to Cornwall’s rich folklore and natural beauty. Evoking the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a haunted movie palace\, this provocative and masterful vision of horror asserts Mark Jenkin as one of the U.K.’s most exciting and singular filmmakers. \n\n\n\nEach month\, Arkadin presents a selection of FOLK HORROR AROUND THE WORLD\, creepy folktales from all corner of the globe to give you the Sunday scaries. SUMMARY:'70s sci-fi classic SILENT RUNNING (1972)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the greatest movies ever made. So often overlooked in the canon of great science-fiction films. To this day\, it remains one of the most moving films I’ve ever seen.” – Mark Kermode \n\n\n\nIn 1968\, visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull designed the ground-breaking special photographic effects of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Four years later\, he stamped his own indelible mark on the science fiction genre with his mesmerizing directorial debut\, SILENT RUNNING. In the not-so-distant future\, Earth is barren of all flora and fauna\, with what remains of the planet’s former ecosystems preserved aboard a fleet of greenhouses orbiting in space. When the crews are ordered to destroy the remaining specimens\, one botanist\, Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern)\, rebels and flees towards Saturn in a desperate bid to preserve his own little piece of Earth that was\, accompanied only by the ship’s three adorable service robots\, which he nicknames Huey\, Dewey\, and Louie. Featuring a captivating\, 100%-committed central performance by Dern\, visual effects that rival anything in Star Wars\, folk songs by Joan Baez\, and a powerful ecological message\, SILENT RUNNING is a haunting and prescient sci-fi classic that resonates just as strongly today as it did upon its original release. \n\n\n\nThis screening is part of Arkadin’s April 2026 series\, HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?—featuring botanical wonders\, homicidal flora\, and secret gardens for you to make your escape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOTHER WORLDS brings you to strange new realms through science fiction and fantasy. SUMMARY:TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE CRITTERS CUT presented by Strange Brew

The film was a huge box office success during its original release in 1990 and held the record for highest grossing independent film for nearly a decade.   \n\n\n\nCritters finds a group of small\, fluffy alien monsters called Krites landing in a rural Kansas town\, terrorizing a family’s farm house. The Krites are followed by a shapeshifting bounty hunter who poses as a new wave rocker named Johnny Steele. Critters\, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year\, inspired a franchise of four more horror comedy sequels. \n\n\n\nTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – The Critters Cut was conceived and edited by Jon Scorfina of Strange Brew and Michael Morlaine of Dark Dream Cinema. Toy Division STL will have a Ninja Turtle Pop-up Toy Shop in the Arkadin Lobby starting at 6:30 pm.  \n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. SUMMARY:Animated psychedelic screwball classic ALLEGRO NON TROPPO (1976) -- New 2K Restoration!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The film\, a feature length parody of Disney’s Fantasia\, is a masterpiece unto itself – and if you haven’t seen it you are required to attend.” – Jerry Beck\, Cartoon Brew \n\n\n\nAn enterprising producer believes he has hit upon a winning concept: a program of original animated shorts set to classical music. Undeterred by warnings that this has already been done by an American named…uhh…”Prisney\,” he rallies an orchestra of geriatric women\, a bullish conductor\, and an animator that he keeps locked in the dungeon. A gleeful sendup of Disney’s Fantasia\, Allegro Non Troppo blends live-action slapstick with cheeky animation for a film as joyful and raunchy as it is thoughtful and cutting. Witness a new civilization spring into being from the residue in a soda pop bottle left behind by space travelers\, an aging satyr struggle to recapture the vitality of his distant youth\, a telling of the Adam and Eve story that’s miles away from anything ever taught in Sunday school\, and many other churlish and cheeky delights besides in this best-known work from Italian psychedelic screwball maestro Bruno Bozetto\, newly restored and celebrating its 50th anniversary. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of TWISTED DISNEY\, a three-film micro series featuring a parody\, an alternate take\, and a look at the underbelly of the sprawling House of Mouse. \n\n\n\nEach month\, DRAWN VISIONS presents an outré gem from the wild\, wonderful world of animation. Focusing on the strange\, the underseen\, and the unclassifiable\, this series proves cartoons aren’t just for kids\, they’re for total freaks too! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE MONSTER (2016) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“A delightfully bloody\, straightforward creature feature that contains spectacular practical creature effects worthy of widespread recognition.” – Certified Forgotten \n\n\n\nWhile delivering her daughter Lizzy to a new life with her dad\, struggling addict Kathy collides with a wolf in the middle of the road\, in the middle of the woods\, in the middle of the night. And thus she finds herself stranded\, with no one around\, and something vicious in the dark. In no time at all\, a ride with her daughter becomes a night of survival\, as they find themselves hunted by a monster they can barely see\, but who can see them just fine. \n\n\n\nRocking the cathartic-horror trend better than most of its contemporaries\, this here-and-gone A24 thriller found the exact middle ground between grim family drama and kickass creature feature. Boiling it down to the bare essentials—darkness\, the woods\, a broken-down car\, a kid\, a mom\, and a monster—it deals in the symbolic horror of the 2010s while delivering a high-octane pulverizer that’s as heavy on the action as it is the emotional heft. This one’ll strip your nerves raw\, and leave you shivering in its wake. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:The Marx Brothers in ANIMAL CRACKERS (1930) w/ Groucho pre-show
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Unrelentingly hilarious! It’s so difficult to quantify just the anarchy and undeniable joy that comes from watching the Marx Brothers at the top of their game. There are few essential pleasures on this planet; Animal Crackers is one.” – Pre-Code.com \n\n\n\nFilled with comedy sketches\, musical numbers and plenty of gags\, ANIMAL CRACKERS is the first film to truly capture the Marx Brothers’ anarchic spirit and remains one of their most quotable works. Groucho stars as the original Captain Spaulding—decades before the name was repurposed by Rob Zombie for a murderous clown. Spaulding is a famed African explorer being honored at a high society party at the estate of Mrs. Rittenhouse (ur-dowager Margaret Dumont)\, but mayhem and chaos ensue after a valuable painting disappears and Spaulding\, along with the Professor (Harpo)\, Signore Emanuel Ravelli (Chico) and Horatio (Zeppo) “help” search for it. Highlighted by musical performances including “Hooray for Captain Spaulding\,” which would later become the theme song to Groucho’s popular TV series You Bet Your Life\, ANIMAL CRACKERS may just be Groucho’s finest hour. \n\n\n\nThe film will be preceded by a Groucho Marx pre-show starting at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Louise Brooks in PANDORA'S BOX (1929) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\nOne of the masters of early German cinema\, G. W. Pabst had an innate talent for discovering actresses (including Greta Garbo). And perhaps none of his female stars shone brighter than Kansas native and onetime Ziegfeld girl Louise Brooks\, whose legendary persona was defined by Pabst’s lurid\, controversial melodrama Pandora’s Box. Sensationally modern\, the film follows the downward spiral of the fiery\, brash\, yet innocent showgirl Lulu\, whose sexual vivacity has a devastating effect on everyone she comes in contact with. Daring and stylish\, Pandora’s Box is one of silent cinema’s great masterworks and a testament to Brooks’s dazzling individuality. (Janus Films) \n\n\n\nRestored from the best surviving 35mm elements at Haghefilm Conservation under the supervision of the Deutsche Kinemathek with the cooperation of George Eastman Museum\, the Cinémathèque Française\, Cineteca di Bologna\, Národní filmový archiv\, and Gosfilmofond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU-CHOU (2001) presented by Lost in the Arthouse
\n\n\n\n“Shunji Iwai’s spacey\, torpid dream-epic of youthful angst and escapism in modern Japan: it stays with you.” – The Guardian \n\n\n\nWhen it appeared 25 years ago\, most critics weren’t sure what to make of Shunji Iwai’s ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU-CHOU. Its jagged\, dreamy exploration of pop fandom\, online identity\, and adolescent angst was perhaps too up-to-the-minute for writers still being published in print newspapers. But for younger audiences who’ve grown up on the internet\, LILY CHOU-CHOU speaks to them on an almost subliminal level. No wonder\, it’s one of Letterboxd’s top 20 films by “heart rate” (the ratio of likes to watches). Iwai’s film follows the online and IRL lives of a group of teenagers who worship the eponymous pop idol\, an ethereal Bjork-like chanteuse whose music provides the only real escape from the cruelties\, large and small\, they face in their daily lives. Through an online message board devoted to Lily Chou-Chou\, they find connection while their non-digital reality drives them further and further apart. Scored to the music of Lily (actually\, singer Salyu)\, Iwai’s lyrical film leads to a heart-rending crescendo. \n\n\n\nThis screening is part of Arkadin’s May 2026 series\, THE COMPUTER IS MY FRENEMY\, featuring films that explore our collective love-hate relationship with the digital world. Does the internet truly bring us together or only tear us further apart? Find out this month! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis screening is part of Arkadin’s May 2026 series\, THE COMPUTER IS MY FRENEMY\, featuring films that explore our collective love-hate relationship with the digital world. SUMMARY:Rare Soviet adaptation of 'Beauty and the Beast' folktale THE SCARLET FLOWER (1978) -- $3!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Hypnotic\, oneiric… surreal images that call to mind Wojciech Has’s The Hourglass Sanatorium (1973) in their occult mystery.” – Midnight Only \n\n\n\nA folkloric fever dream\, Irina Povolotskaya’s THE SCARLET FLOWER turns Russia’s own “Beauty and the Beast” story into a lush\, dreamlike spectacle. A merchant’s brave daughter trades her freedom for a magical blossom and finds herself in the enchanted domain of a fearsome\, tormented creature. With a creature that’s less Disney and more Swamp Thing\, this eerie\, stylized fable sits somewhere between storybook coziness and uncanny nightmare. Packed with live‑action pageantry\, glowing colors\, and theatrical fantasy\, this is a strange\, woozy folk romance that rivals even Jean Cocteau and Juraj Herz—not to mention the Walt Disney Company—for stunningly surreal imagery. \n\n\n\nPlus\, to round out the “twisted Disney” them\, a bizarre Pinocchio surprise short! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of TWISTED DISNEY\, a three-film micro series featuring a parody\, an alternate take\, and a look at the underbelly of the sprawling House of Mouse. \n\n\n\nEach month\, Arkadin presents a selection of FOLK HORROR AROUND THE WORLD\, creepy folktales from all corner of the globe to give you the Sunday scaries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:$3 MONDAY MYSTERY MOVIE: Weirdo Synth-Drenched Retro-Analog Sci-Fi Comedy
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the last Monday of every month\, Arkadin chooses an underseen deep cut to inflict upon an unwitting audience. Though the genre and tone may change\, the price always remains the same: three measly bucks. You can’t afford not to get yourself a ticket! \n\n\n\nStrap in for one of the strangest romantic comedies ever made. Actually\, romantic comedy doesn’t even come close to covering this month’s mystery movie… It’s more like a synth-drenched fever dream from the early days of personal computing. By turns wacky\, sincere\, baffling\, and hilarious\, this utterly singular attempt to fuse rom-com and sci-fi boasts some great tunes\, some genuine laughs\, and a weirdly frenetic visual style that keeps things maniacally entertaining. Even though it has nothing to do with fallen soldiers\, mattress sales\, or barbecue\, it’s still the perfect way to close out your Memorial Day and it’s an even more perfect entry in this month’s Arkadin theme\, “The Computer Is My Frenemy”! SUMMARY:Michael Crichton's WESTWORLD (1973) -- ᴏᴛʜᴇʀ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅꜱ
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“An efficiently unsettling prediction of the horrors that artificial intelligence would bringThe androids of Westworld are so lifelike because humans want to enact their darkest impulses on to other humans\, however much they suppress these latent desires.” – The Guardian \n\n\n\nBoy\, have we got a vacation for you… In 1973\, novelist-turned-filmmaker Michael Crichton made his directorial debut with WESTWORLD\, a groundbreaking fusion of science fiction and action-thriller that would prove decades ahead of its time\, laying the groundwork for his later hit Jurassic Park and changing the face of sci-fi. Set in a futuristic resort where wealthy vacationers can live out their wildest fantasies in hyper-realistic theme parks\, the film stars Yul Brynner as the Gunslinger\, an android cowboy who goes dangerously off-script\, turning old buddies Peter (Richard Benjamin) and John’s (James Brolin) dream holiday into a nightmare. Slick\, suspenseful\, and eerily prescient\, WESTWORLD combines a gripping man-versus-machine chase with thought-provoking questions about technology\, control\, and the price of playing God. Packed with atmosphere and memorable performances\, this cult classic remains a landmark in genre cinema\, a high-tech nightmare that never loses its bite. \n\n\n\nThis screening is part of Arkadin’s May 2026 series\, THE COMPUTER IS MY FRENEMY\, featuring films that explore our collective love-hate relationship with the digital world. SUMMARY:DOPE (2015) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nIn Dope (2015)\, Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is a nerdy kid trying to survive high school in “The Bottoms” a tough neighborhood in Inglewood\, California. Malcolm is obsessed with ’90s hip hop and fashion and dreams of going to Harvard University after high school. When Malcolm and his two best friends\, Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons)\, get an invite to an underground party by the local drug dealer Dom (A$AP Rocky) their lives get turned upside down when they mistakenly take home a backpack full of drugs.   \n\n\n\nThis low budget coming-of-age film was released in summer 2015\, and though it was critically-praised\, it was mostly overlooked during an era of comic book blockbuster mania. Dope\, directed by Rick Famuyiwa\, is an under-seen gem that captures the essence of classic John Hughes teen dramas like The Breakfast Club mixed with the grit of John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood but for a Gen Z audience. The film features the debut acting role of Shameik Moore\, as well as a standout performance from Zoë Kravitz\, narration from Forest Whitaker\, original songs by Pharrell\, and a cameo from Blake Anderson of Workaholics. Dope also features a time-capsule subplot involving the rise of Bitcoin just as it was beginning to enter mainstream usage.   \n\n\n\nA ’90s Hip Hop Preshow will start at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:THE BLACKENING (2022) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“An unapologetically Black comedy through and through\, it maintains its wit and bite to the very end\, boastfully serving audiences an hilarious film we didn’t know we needed.” – Peyton Robinson\, RogerEbert.com \n\n\n\nWhen confronted with a diabolical board game in the cabin they’ve rented to celebrate Juneteenth\, a crew of old college friends realize they’re stuck in a slasher flick. Armed with their skills\, their wits\, and their knowledge of the genre\, they duke it out ‘til dawn against a legion of stock horror villains determined to take them out one by one. \n\n\n\nA Cabin in the Woods for the Jordan Peele era\, The Blackening sets the record straight on decades of misrepresentation\, while outshining all of its contemporaries with its razor-sharp satirical wit. A loving nod to those who know all the Black horror tropes\, here’s a late-night survival flick in which every character is an audience surrogate\, pissed to find themselves trapped in such a corny premise\, and well aware of what it’ll take to make it through the night. A loving riposte to horror’s most glaring missteps\, The Blackening spins the sins of the genre into one of the most clever horror comedies ever made\, while serving as a celebration of Black joy\, unity\, Rap Snacks\, and not reneging in Spades. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE WOLF HOUSE (2018) w/ creepy stop-motion pre-show
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A mind-blowing haunted house… Directors Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León mingle classic European fairytales in a potpourri of magical notes laden in eeriness… In both concept and execution\, The Wolf House will render you awestruck.” – Carlos Aguilar\, TheWrap \n\n\n\nOne of the most singular and unsettling animated films ever made\, THE WOLF HOUSE is inspired by the real-life case of Colonia Dignidad\, a remote Chilean Nazi sect founded after WWII. Painstakingly animated by Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León\, this contemporary cult animation classic is a twisted fairy tale\, combining stop-motion and traditional animation in a dark kaleidoscopic fantasia\, photographed to appear as one continuous shot. Maria\, a young woman\, finds refuge in a house in the south of Chile after escaping from a sect of German religious fanatics. Two pigs\, the only occupants of the house\, welcome her inside. The ever-shifting universe of the house reacts to Maria’s feelings as the animals transform slowly into humans and the house becomes a nightmarish world unto itself. \n\n\n\nCome out for a creepy stop-motion pre-show\, beginning at 6:30 pm.
