Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nGhost in the Shell (1995) is set in a fictional 2029 in which cybernetic technology allows for the human body to be fully replaced with mechanical body parts and lets the brain connect directly to the internet. Major Motoko Kusanagi is the cyborg leader of Public Security Section 9 in Japan. The Major and her team are investigating a highly advanced artificial intelligence known as the Puppet Master that can “ghost hack” cyberized bodies. As the Major gets closer to catching the puppet master\, she struggles with a philosophical debate about the very nature of consciousness and the soul. \n\n\n\nAdapted from the manga by Masamune Shirow\, Ghost in the Shell was a Japanese British international co-production from  Kodansha\, Bandai Visual and Manga Entertainment\, all who were looking to create an anime film as critically acclaimed and successful as the groundbreaking Akira. The film originally failed to recoup its budget during its theatrical release\, but soon gained a massive cult following when it was released on VHS\, becoming the first Japanese film ever to top the Billboard video sales chart in 1996. Now Ghost in the Shell is widely regarded as a masterpiece\, with praise for director Mamoru Oshii for his “thermo-optical camouflage” animation and a memorable score by Kenji Kawai. The film launched a franchise that includes multiple sequels\, television series and a live-action Hollywood remake\, as well as having a massive influence on the Wachowskis when they created The Matrix. \n\n\n\nWith AI technology playing an increasingly large and disruptive role in our society\, Ghost in the Shell has never been a more relevant film to reexamine than today. Four teenagers from a small-town in Iowa attend a travelling carnival. Once at the carnival\, the two teenage couples smoke marijuana\, heckle a fortune teller\, and sneak into a burlesque show. Eventually\, they dare each other to spend the night at the carnival’s funhouse attraction\, so they can have some after-hours hanky panky. Though the frisky teens soon discover they’re not alone in the funhouse\, but locked in with an ominous monster trying to hunt them down.    \n\n\n\nAfter the surprise success of Friday the 13th in 1980\, Universal Pictures wanted to fast track their own teenage horror film. They offered director Tobe Hooper the project\, which was his first major studio film after the runaway success of his low-budget horror masterpiece The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. In The Funhouse\, Hooper masterfully crafts an Americana take on the folktales of children that go missing at the traveling carnival\, and the boy who cried wolf. He also continues his theme of the disintegration of the American family he started in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre through The Monster’s deranged relationship with his father. STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\nCelebrate the glory of silent cinema’s greatest clown\, as Silents\, Please! presents BUSTERPALOOZA!  \n\n\n\nOften cited as one of his most significant films—as well as one of his funniest—1923’s Our Hospitality is his take on the notorious feud between the Hatfield and McCoy clans (here renamed the Canfields and the McKays). Keaton is luckless William McKay\, who must journey down South to view his lacklustre inheritance\, only to be seduced along the way by one of the Canfields\, Virginia\, who lures him to her family’s house so that the men of the clan can shoot him down. But William knows that the Canfield men won’t kill him as long as he’s in their house\, so he endeavors to stay put there\, against all obstacles. With its attention to 19th-century period detail and emphasis on integrating the gags into the storyline\, Our Hospitality was not just a breakthrough in Keaton’s career\, but it was also noted even during its release as an advancement in the medium\, with Variety proclaiming\, “It marks a step forward in the production of picture comedies.” \n\n\n\nPlus\, a selection of Buster Keaton’s finest and funniest shorts! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+.
