SUMMARY:THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE (2016) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“A campy\, nasty\, tremendously fun horror experience in which death proves not the ending we might expect” – The Film Stage \n\n\n\nWorking late night at a morgue is bad enough; it’s even worse when you’re tasked with determining cause of death of an anonymous woman in the middle of a storm. You can try to stay professional\, but when sinister forces make themselves known\, it’s time to get out—unless you find yourself trapped. By stripping its narrative down to the bare essentials\, The Autopsy of Jane Doe focuses on what really matters: delivering a slam-bang thriller that’s heavy on the atmosphere\, mystery\, and overall creepiness. Featuring the always-dependable Brian Cox\, playing opposite Emile Hirsch\, Autopsy is relentless in its mission to scare the living hell out of you. This is one night watch you’ll be glad to leave. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. Information about content can also be found on Common Sense Media\, IMDB and DoesTheDogDie.com\, as well as through general internet searches. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. We follow the MPAA rating guidelines for all other films.\n\n\n\nTickets can be purchased using the BUY TICKETS link above. Upon ordering\, you will receive a confirmation email from Square. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the show at the concession counter.\n\n\n\nIf you’ve purchased advance tickets\, when you arrive\, please give your name at the concession counter to check in. \n\n\n\nTickets are returnable by sending a request through the contact form located on our About Us page prior to showtime.\n\n\n\nWhen an event is sold out\, we reserve the right to release open seats to customers on the waitlist. SUMMARY:SHe (2019) -- a stop-motion horror mind-bender w/ filmmaker Q&A
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the most self-assured\, stunningly composed and remarkably inventive debut features ever made…a blistering commentary on systemic sexism” – Rough Cut \n\n\n\nThis highly stylized and expertly crafted stop-motion horror mind-bender depicts a male-dominated authoritarian world where females are kept only for breeding purposes. The twist? Everyone\, male and female\, is a shoe. Women are depicted as high heels containing spindly vines\, while the males are black loafers with sharp teeth. In this forbidding realm\, a mother shoe survives and protects her baby by disguising herself as a male. Told without dialogue\, this labor of love from Chinese-born animator Shengwei Zhou was six years in the making and serves as a tribute to the director’s mother\, who faced sexist abuse working in the male-dominated construction industry. Drawing comparisons to everything from the Quay Brothers to Suzann Pitt\, Zhou’s film is defiantly its own beast. \n\n\n\nPlease stick around after the film for a virtual Q&A with director Shengwei Zhou. We’re told this screening could even play a part in helping Shengwei achieve tenure! \n\n\n\n“[I]t’s hard to think of a stop-motion work more affecting\, disturbing\, and downright hallucinogenic as Zhou Shengwei‘s SHe” – The Spool“Even if it weren’t as superbly crafted as it is\, “SHe” would still command a certain fascination simply for being such an out-there conceptual oddity that managed to surmount myriad challenges to be fully realized. It’s rare for something this conceptually bizarre (not to mention commercially dubious) to also be so skillful.” – Variety“This inventive film is unlike anything that you have ever seen before.” – Bubbleblabber \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. SUMMARY:DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1931) presented by Forbidden Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForbidden Hollywood is a monthly series hosted by STL film critic Katie Carter celebrating the Pre-Code films of the early 1930s\, when movies were wild\, racy\, transgressive\, and tons of fun. \n\n\n\nViolent and sexually daring\, director Rouben Mamoulian’s 1931 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel—coming right on the heels of Hollywood’s horror craze kicked off by the one-two punch of Universal’s Dracula and Frankenstein—remains iconic. Fredric March won a Best Actor Oscar for his titular performance\, ably embodying the charismatic but edgy Jekyll and virtually disappearing into the beastly Hyde\, the two sides of the man represented by the two women in his life: his upper class fiancée Muriel (Rose Hobart) and vivacious prostitute Ivy (Miriam Hopkins). DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE contains artful flourishes that enhance the narrative (wipes\, dissolves\, split screens\, dreamy montages\, and first person POV sequences)\, cinematography by Karl Struss\, and ground-breaking make-up effects illustrating Jekyll’s transformation into the simian-like Hyde that are jaw-dropping to this day\, but it’s the film’s explicit interpretation of Jekyll’s sexual repression— featuring an infamous strip scene performed by Hopkins— that prompted its content to be severely cut after Production Code enforcement began\, the complete classic left unseen for decades. SUMMARY:THE MAN WHO LAUGHS (1928) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\n“An expressionistic masterpiece of spooky\, fairy tale Poe-meets-Perrault imagery” – Commercial Appeal \n\n\n\nFamous for inspiring the Joker’s maniacally grinning visage\, Paul Leni’s THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is a horror classic in its own right — a dark gothic romance told in haunting German Expressionist style. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo\, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS stars the great Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine\, the son of a nobleman executed for treason whose face is permanently disfigured into a smiling rictus by a band of marauding criminals. Gwynplaine becomes a famous carnival performer whose heart is torn by sweet-hearted Dea (Mary Philbin)\, a blind girl who loves him unreservedly\, and Duchess Josiana (Olga Baclanova)\, a powerful and sensual aristocrat who becomes infatuated with him. A tragic tale of love\, shame\, and social stigma told against the backdrop of James II’s brutal reign over England\, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is timeless for its horror and its heart. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:EYES WITHOUT A FACE (1960) -- ʟᴏꜱᴛ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴀʀᴛʜᴏᴜꜱᴇ
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Once seen\, never forgotten\, Eyes Without a Face is a film to haunt your dreams. Disturbing\, disorienting\, quietly terrifying.” – Los Angeles Times \n\n\n\nAt his secluded château in the French countryside\, a brilliant\, obsessive doctor (Pierre Brasseur) attempts a radical plastic surgery to restore the beauty of his daughter’s disfigured countenance—at a horrifying price. Eyes Without a Face\, directed by the supremely talented Georges Franju\, is rare in horror cinema for its odd mixture of the ghastly and the lyrical\, and it has been a major influence on the genre in the decades since its release. There are images here—of terror\, of gore\, of inexplicable beauty—that once seen are never forgotten. \n\n\n\nLOST IN THE ARTHOUSE is a monthly series that takes you to hidden corners of filmdom far from the glitz and glamor of Hollywood. From must-see classics to obscurities waiting to be discovered\, these films stand at cinema’s bleeding edge. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Guillermo del Toro's PAN'S LABYRINTH (2006) w/ Fantasy Horror pre-show -- 𝕠𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕝𝕕𝕤
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. WAITLIST OPENS 30 MINS BEFORE SHOWTIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the greatest of all fantasy films…there is so much impact and intensity\, and such a richness of visual imagination.” – Roger Ebert \n\n\n\nAn Academy Award–winning dark fable set five years after the end of the Spanish Civil War\, Pan’s Labyrinth encapsulates the rich visual style and genre-defying craft of Guillermo del Toro. Eleven-year-old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero\, in a mature and tender performance) comes face to face with the horrors of fascism when she and her pregnant mother are uprooted to the countryside\, where her new stepfather (Sergi López)\, a sadistic captain in General Francisco Franco’s army\, hunts down Republican guerrillas refusing to give up the fight. The violent reality in which Ofelia lives merges seamlessly with her fantastical interior world when she meets a faun in a decaying labyrinth and is set on a strange\, mythic journey that is at once terrifying and beautiful. In his revisiting of this bloody period in Spanish history\, del Toro creates a vivid depiction of the monstrosities of war infiltrating a child’s imagination and threatening the innocence of youth. \n\n\n\nPlus\, come out early for a sampling of mystical terror with a Fantasy Horror pre-show starting at 4:30 pm! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:SMARTY (1934) presented by Forbidden Hollywood
\n\n\n\nMarketed with the taglines “A picture with a wallop!” and “She changed her husbands like she changed her hats\,” Warner Brothers’ 1934 comedy SMARTY may be more accurately described by its UK title\, Hit Me Again. Vivacious Joan Blondell stars as Vickie\, who sets the action of the film in motion when she goads her husband Tony (Warren William) into slapping her at a party. A messy whirl of divorce\, remarriage\, and extra-marital affairs among their social circle follows. Its abrasive treatment of its subject has generated controversy in the decades since its release\, but while SMARTY is frequently derided for supposedly endorsing spousal abuse\, it’s actually an incisive dive into the life of a woman who enjoys rough sex and knows how to get it\, populated by female characters who always maintain their agency. Featuring one of the most pre-Code casts imaginable— character actors Edward Everett Horton and Frank McHugh as well as Claire Dodd join William and Blondell—SMARTY is the sort of gleefully sordid\, uniquely pre-Code film that couldn’t even be made today. SUMMARY:GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995) -- 30th Anniversary Screening presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nGhost in the Shell (1995) is set in a fictional 2029 in which cybernetic technology allows for the human body to be fully replaced with mechanical body parts and lets the brain connect directly to the internet. Major Motoko Kusanagi is the cyborg leader of Public Security Section 9 in Japan. The Major and her team are investigating a highly advanced artificial intelligence known as the Puppet Master that can “ghost hack” cyberized bodies. As the Major gets closer to catching the puppet master\, she struggles with a philosophical debate about the very nature of consciousness and the soul. \n\n\n\nAdapted from the manga by Masamune Shirow\, Ghost in the Shell was a Japanese British international co-production from  Kodansha\, Bandai Visual and Manga Entertainment\, all who were looking to create an anime film as critically acclaimed and successful as the groundbreaking Akira. The film originally failed to recoup its budget during its theatrical release\, but soon gained a massive cult following when it was released on VHS\, becoming the first Japanese film ever to top the Billboard video sales chart in 1996. Now Ghost in the Shell is widely regarded as a masterpiece\, with praise for director Mamoru Oshii for his “thermo-optical camouflage” animation and a memorable score by Kenji Kawai. The film launched a franchise that includes multiple sequels\, television series and a live-action Hollywood remake\, as well as having a massive influence on the Wachowskis when they created The Matrix. \n\n\n\nWith AI technology playing an increasingly large and disruptive role in our society\, Ghost in the Shell has never been a more relevant film to reexamine than today. Don’t miss this 30th anniversary screening presented by Strange Brew celebrating one of the most acclaimed sci-fi anime films of all time. \n\n\n\nThe film will be presented in its dubbed version. \n\n\n\nA Ghost in the Shell – Tachikomatic Days preshow will begin at 6:25 pm. DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLOST IN THE ARTHOUSE is a monthly series hosted by Arkadin co-owner Keith Watson that takes you to hidden corners of filmdom far from Hollywood. From must-see classics to obscurities waiting to be discovered\, these films stand at cinema’s bleeding edge. \n\n\n\n“Marketa Lazarová sweeps us up in a sort of rapture before we even get our feet on the ground. František Vláčil directs with a symphonic variation of tone and pace\, moving with assurance from the frenetic to the contemplative\, the horrific to the erotic.” – Tom Gunning \n\n\n\nIn its native land\, František Vláčil’s MARKETA LAZAROVÁ has been hailed as the greatest Czech film ever made in a poll of over 100 Czech film critics. For those outside of Czechia who’ve yet to discover it\, the film is a revelation. Based on a novel by Vladislav Vančura\, this stirring and poetic depiction of a feud between two rival medieval clans is a fierce\, epic\, and meticulously designed evocation of the clashes between Christianity and paganism\, humankind and nature\, love and violence. Vláčil’s approach was to re-create the textures and mentalities of a long-ago way of life\, rather than to make a conventional historical drama\, and the result is dazzling. With its inventive widescreen cinematography\, editing\, and sound design\, MARKETA LAZAROVÁ is an experimental action film. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s month-long series KNIGHTY KNIGHT\, featuring knights in shining armor and other medieval tales! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:EMANON (1987) presented by St. Louis Video Society
DESCRIPTION:SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY digs deep in its extensive archives to present the weirdest\, wildest\, most incredible VHS obscurities. Always free\, always presented by Video Society archivist James Milam! \n\n\n\nWhat is Emanon? Or rather\, WHO is EMANON?! Why he’s a magical\, mysterious homeless man played by writer/director Stuart Paul in one of the most bizarre vanity projects ever conceived. This “modern-day wino Christ” (LA Weekly) must help a very wealthy\, sick child (Growing Pains‘ Jeremy Miller) and his fashion-designer mom overcome the grief of losing a loved one. Not one to shy away from savior vibes\, the titular Emanon makes messianic mischief as he spouts half-baked\, New Age psychobabble\, all while saving the family’s floundering fashion business. The film itself is a family affair with not just one\, but SIX (!) Pauls working in front of\, and behind\, the camera–including Baby Geniuses franchise producer Steven Paul. They’re practically the Osmonds with so much talent in their DNA! \n\n\n\nEMANON (1987) has never been released on DVD\, Blu-ray or streaming\, so this is a once in lifetime chance to catch the film on VHS at Arkadin on Monday November 10th at 7pm! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Abel Gance's anti-war epic J'ACCUSE (1919) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\n“One of the most terrible indictments against war which it is possible to imagine” -Kinematograph Weekly \n\n\n\nFive months after the armistice was signed that ended World War I\, Abel Gance premiered his epic J’ACCUSE in Paris. Many of his Gance’s friends had been killed in the trenches\, and\, as the director later explained\, “J’ACCUSE for me was not just a film…I had a feeling of frenzy to use this new medium\, the cinema\, to show the world the stupidity of war.” And show it he did\, with the vibrant style and epic scope that defines the work of this brilliant early-film auteur. The main story is a love triangle between Jean\, a pacifist poet\, who’s in love with Edith\, who is in turn unhappily married to François\, a brutish provincial farmer. When war is declared\, both men join the army\, serving in the same frontline regiment. Battling the Germans together\, Jean and François reach an uneasy truce \, but back at home\, Edith is put in harm’s way due to her husband’s jealous suspicions. The film was incorporates real battle footage\, as well as actual letters sent home by two of Gance’s friends who died in the war. J’ACCUSE’s celebrated “Return of the Dead” sequence was filmed using 2\,000 soldiers on leave. The film remains a blistering indictment of war that sadly resonates to this day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Weirdo Estonian Folk Horror NOVEMBER (2017) -- 𝔉𝔬𝔩𝔨 ℌ𝔬𝔯𝔯𝔬𝔯 𝔄𝔯𝔬𝔲𝔫𝔡 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔚𝔬𝔯𝔩𝔡
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Part Grimm fairy tale\, part Eastern European folklore\, and all fever dream…it’s as beautiful as it is profoundly weird as fuck.” – Rolling Stone \n\n\n\nSet in a pagan Estonian village where werewolves\, the plague\, and spirits roam\, Rainer Sarnet’s third feature film is a bold\, twisted fairy tale about unrequited love. In NOVEMBER\, the villagers’ main problem is how to survive the cold\, dark winter. And\, to that aim\, nothing is taboo. People steal from each other\, from their German manor lords\, from spirits\, the devil\, and from Christ. They are willing to give away their souls to thieving creatures made of wood and metal called kratts\, who help their masters\, whose soul they purchased\, steal even more. A young farmgirl Liina (Rea Lest) is hopelessly in love with Hans (Jörgen Liik)\, a nearby farmhand\, whose heart she loses to the daughter of the German manor lord. In order to regain his love\, Liina turns to any means necessary\, even if that means tapping into the black magic that is circling around the village. Estonian pagan legends and Christian mythologies come to a spell-binding intersection in NOVEMBER. \n\n\n\nEach month\, Arkadin presents a selection of FOLK HORROR AROUND THE WORLD\, creepy folktales from all corner of the globe to give you the Sunday scaries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE FIRST WIVES CLUB (1996) presented by Girlhood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGirlhood is a semi-regular series hosted by Arkadin co-owner Sarah Baraba that spotlights stories of sisterhood on the silver screen. \n\n\n\n“Exhilaratingly woman-positive and funny!” – On The Issues \n\n\n\nStarring powerhouse comediennes Diane Keaton (RIP)\, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler\, THE FIRST WIVES CLUB continues to deliver delights nearly 30 years on. Three college besties reunite after a tragedy and discover that they have more in common than their ambition to succeed in life (and their Lesley Gore fandom) — they also all have scumbag cheating husbands who need to learn a lesson. So these baddies wrangle their wits to bring down the patriarchy. Though at its heart a comedy\, FWC tackles heavy issues — identity\, aging\, self-esteem\, alcoholism\, changing friendship dynamics — as our heroines realize that maybe revenge is a dish best served through building each other up rather than tearing each other down. Is it the perfect feminist film? Certainly not. But as the film repeatedly points out — it’s the 90s!  \n\n\n\nThe film will be preceded by a “You Don’t Own Me” sing-along. Dressing in white pantsuits is strongly encouraged\, but not required.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The best of the postwar American science-fiction films; the Martian machines have a quality of real terror\, their sinister apparitions\, prowlings and pulverisings are spectacularly well done\, and the scenes of panic and destruction are staged with real flair!” – Monthly Film Bulletin \n\n\n\nThankfully\, neither Ice Cube nor Amazon Prime comes within a mile of this timeless classic of science-fiction terror! A mysterious\, meteorlike object has landed in a small California town. All clocks have stopped. A fleet of glowing green UFOs hovers menacingly over the entire globe. The Martian invasion of Earth has begun\, and it seems that nothing—neither military might nor the scientific know-how of nuclear physicist (and MST3k “mad” namesake) Dr. Clayton Forrester (Gene Barry)—can stop it. In the expert hands of genre specialists George Pal and Byron Haskin\, H. G. Wells’s end-of-civilization classic receives a chilling Cold War–era update\, complete with hallucinatory Technicolor and visionary\, Oscar-winning special effects. Emblazoned with iconographic images of 1950s science fiction\, The War of the Worlds is both an influential triumph of visual imagination and a still-disquieting document of the wonder and terror of the atomic age. \n\n\n\nCome out early for a pre-show starting at 3 pm where we’ll listen to the broadcast that traumatized a nation\, Orson Welles’ legendary 1938 dramatic radio adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Jim Jarmusch's NIGHT ON EARTH (1991) w/ Tom Waits pre-show presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nNIGHT ON EARTH contains five vignettes linked together by parallel narratives of bizarre taxi rides. The film tells the individual stories of taxi drivers and their unique passengers over the course of one night in five different cities: Los Angeles\, New York City\, Paris\, Rome and Helsinki. Written\, produced and directed by American independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch\, his 1991 anthology film features a huge ensemble cast that includes Winona Ryder\, Gena Rowlands\, Giancarlo Esposito\, Rosie Perez\, Roberto Benigni and more\, as well as a soundtrack by eccentric composer Tom Waits. Each sonder-evoking story\, some of which are comedic like “Helmut & Yo-Yo” in New York and others heartbreakingly tragic such as the determined taxi driver’s tale in Helsinki\, paint the poetic\, life-affirming commonality of strangers’ brief interactions that could be happening simultaneously anytime\, anywhere on the planet.   \n\n\n\nA Tom Waits music video pre-show will begin at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Animated Christmas Folk Horror KRABAT: THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE (1978) -- $5
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Eerie\, creepy…fantastic\, mystical\, and oddly beautiful. A lost treasure of early animation\, nearly unknown to the English speaking world.” – R-Massive \n\n\n\nDirected by Karel Zeman\, the wildly imaginative “Czech Méliès” behind classics like The Fabulous Baron Munchausen and Invention for Destruction\, KRABAT: THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE is a hauntingly beautiful tale of black magic perfect for the Christmas season. Animated with papercraft models\, KRABAT is like the darkest children’s storybook ever written come to life. Based on the novel by Otfried Preußler\, itself adapted from a Sorbian folktale\, Zeman’s film tells the story of a young boy initiated into the mysterious world of magic by an evil sorcerer who runs a kind of evil Hogwarts out of a creepy old mill. Filled with dark humor\, bestial transmogrification\, and a chilly winter atmosphere\, this little-known folk-horror masterpiece feels as if it emerged fully formed from the mysterious forests of Central Europe. \n\n\n\nEach month\, DRAWN VISIONS presents an outré gem from the wild\, wonderful world of animation. Focusing on the strange\, the underseen\, and the unclassifiable\, this series proves cartoons aren’t just for kids\, they’re for total freaks too! SUMMARY:Lynne Ramsay's MORVERN CALLAR (2002) w/ Aphex Twin pre-show presented by Lost in the Arthouse
\n\n\n\n“A mesmerizing cinematic poem from the first frame to the last.” -Glenn Kenny\, Premiere \n\n\n\nThe Christmas season was never bluer than it is in Lynne Ramsay’s oblique masterpiece of dislocation MORVERN CALLAR. The film opens on Christmas morning as the title character (Samantha Morton) awakes to find her boyfriend face down in a pool of blood\, dead by his own hand. He has left behind a suicide note\, a mixtape\, Christmas presents\, money for a funeral\, and an unpublished novel. Faced with this crisis\, what can Morvern do? Put her name on the novel\, submit it to a publisher\, hack up her boyfriend’s body\, and head to Spain with the cash\, of course! What might sound lurid or deeply unpleasant plays\, in Ramsay’s masterful hands\, as an utterly entrancing study of the vagaries of the human heart and mind. Morvern is an arresting enigma brought to full mercurial life by Morton in one of the 21st century’s finest performances. Powered by one of the coolest soundtracks of all time—featuring tracks by Can\, Stereolab\, Aphex Twin\, and more—MORVERN CALLAR is haunting\, hypnotic\, and\, more than 20 years on\, remains one of cinema’s most beautiful unsolved riddles. \n\n\n\nThis program will also feature Lynne Ramsay’s Christmas-set short film GASMAN. \n\n\n\nAnd come out early for an Aphex Twin pre-show starting at 6:30 pm! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person.
