SUMMARY:EYES WITHOUT A FACE (1960) -- ʟᴏꜱᴛ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴀʀᴛʜᴏᴜꜱᴇ
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Once seen\, never forgotten\, Eyes Without a Face is a film to haunt your dreams. Disturbing\, disorienting\, quietly terrifying.” – Los Angeles Times \n\n\n\nAt his secluded château in the French countryside\, a brilliant\, obsessive doctor (Pierre Brasseur) attempts a radical plastic surgery to restore the beauty of his daughter’s disfigured countenance—at a horrifying price. Eyes Without a Face\, directed by the supremely talented Georges Franju\, is rare in horror cinema for its odd mixture of the ghastly and the lyrical\, and it has been a major influence on the genre in the decades since its release. There are images here—of terror\, of gore\, of inexplicable beauty—that once seen are never forgotten. \n\n\n\nLOST IN THE ARTHOUSE is a monthly series that takes you to hidden corners of filmdom far from the glitz and glamor of Hollywood. From must-see classics to obscurities waiting to be discovered\, these films stand at cinema’s bleeding edge. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. SUMMARY:THE MAN WHO LAUGHS (1928) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\n“An expressionistic masterpiece of spooky\, fairy tale Poe-meets-Perrault imagery” – Commercial Appeal \n\n\n\nFamous for inspiring the Joker’s maniacally grinning visage\, Paul Leni’s THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is a horror classic in its own right — a dark gothic romance told in haunting German Expressionist style. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo\, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS stars the great Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine\, the son of a nobleman executed for treason whose face is permanently disfigured into a smiling rictus by a band of marauding criminals. Gwynplaine becomes a famous carnival performer whose heart is torn by sweet-hearted Dea (Mary Philbin)\, a blind girl who loves him unreservedly\, and Duchess Josiana (Olga Baclanova)\, a powerful and sensual aristocrat who becomes infatuated with him. A tragic tale of love\, shame\, and social stigma told against the backdrop of James II’s brutal reign over England\, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is timeless for its horror and its heart. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1931) presented by Forbidden Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForbidden Hollywood is a monthly series hosted by STL film critic Katie Carter celebrating the Pre-Code films of the early 1930s\, when movies were wild\, racy\, transgressive\, and tons of fun. \n\n\n\nViolent and sexually daring\, director Rouben Mamoulian’s 1931 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel—coming right on the heels of Hollywood’s horror craze kicked off by the one-two punch of Universal’s Dracula and Frankenstein—remains iconic. Fredric March won a Best Actor Oscar for his titular performance\, ably embodying the charismatic but edgy Jekyll and virtually disappearing into the beastly Hyde\, the two sides of the man represented by the two women in his life: his upper class fiancée Muriel (Rose Hobart) and vivacious prostitute Ivy (Miriam Hopkins). DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE contains artful flourishes that enhance the narrative (wipes\, dissolves\, split screens\, dreamy montages\, and first person POV sequences)\, cinematography by Karl Struss\, and ground-breaking make-up effects illustrating Jekyll’s transformation into the simian-like Hyde that are jaw-dropping to this day\, but it’s the film’s explicit interpretation of Jekyll’s sexual repression— featuring an infamous strip scene performed by Hopkins— that prompted its content to be severely cut after Production Code enforcement began\, the complete classic left unseen for decades. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:SHe (2019) -- a stop-motion horror mind-bender w/ filmmaker Q&A
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the most self-assured\, stunningly composed and remarkably inventive debut features ever made…a blistering commentary on systemic sexism” – Rough Cut \n\n\n\nThis highly stylized and expertly crafted stop-motion horror mind-bender depicts a male-dominated authoritarian world where females are kept only for breeding purposes. The twist? Everyone\, male and female\, is a shoe. Women are depicted as high heels containing spindly vines\, while the males are black loafers with sharp teeth. In this forbidding realm\, a mother shoe survives and protects her baby by disguising herself as a male. Told without dialogue\, this labor of love from Chinese-born animator Shengwei Zhou was six years in the making and serves as a tribute to the director’s mother\, who faced sexist abuse working in the male-dominated construction industry. Drawing comparisons to everything from the Quay Brothers to Suzann Pitt\, Zhou’s film is defiantly its own beast. \n\n\n\nPlease stick around after the film for a virtual Q&A with director Shengwei Zhou. We’re told this screening could even play a part in helping Shengwei achieve tenure! \n\n\n\n“[I]t’s hard to think of a stop-motion work more affecting\, disturbing\, and downright hallucinogenic as Zhou Shengwei‘s SHe” – The Spool“Even if it weren’t as superbly crafted as it is\, “SHe” would still command a certain fascination simply for being such an out-there conceptual oddity that managed to surmount myriad challenges to be fully realized. It’s rare for something this conceptually bizarre (not to mention commercially dubious) to also be so skillful.” – Variety“This inventive film is unlike anything that you have ever seen before.” – Bubbleblabber \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. SUMMARY:THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE (2016) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“A campy\, nasty\, tremendously fun horror experience in which death proves not the ending we might expect” – The Film Stage \n\n\n\nWorking late night at a morgue is bad enough; it’s even worse when you’re tasked with determining cause of death of an anonymous woman in the middle of a storm. You can try to stay professional\, but when sinister forces make themselves known\, it’s time to get out—unless you find yourself trapped. By stripping its narrative down to the bare essentials\, The Autopsy of Jane Doe focuses on what really matters: delivering a slam-bang thriller that’s heavy on the atmosphere\, mystery\, and overall creepiness. Featuring the always-dependable Brian Cox\, playing opposite Emile Hirsch\, Autopsy is relentless in its mission to scare the living hell out of you. This is one night watch you’ll be glad to leave. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE FUNHOUSE (1981) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nCome one\, come all\, boils and ghouls\, as Strange Brew kicks off spooky season at Arkadin Cinema with an exhilarating screening of Tobe Hooper’s The Funhouse. Four teenagers from a small-town in Iowa attend a travelling carnival. Once at the carnival\, the two teenage couples smoke marijuana\, heckle a fortune teller\, and sneak into a burlesque show. Eventually\, they dare each other to spend the night at the carnival’s funhouse attraction\, so they can have some after-hours hanky panky. Though the frisky teens soon discover they’re not alone in the funhouse\, but locked in with an ominous monster trying to hunt them down.    \n\n\n\nAfter the surprise success of Friday the 13th in 1980\, Universal Pictures wanted to fast track their own teenage horror film. They offered director Tobe Hooper the project\, which was his first major studio film after the runaway success of his low-budget horror masterpiece The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. In The Funhouse\, Hooper masterfully crafts an Americana take on the folktales of children that go missing at the traveling carnival\, and the boy who cried wolf. He also continues his theme of the disintegration of the American family he started in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre through The Monster’s deranged relationship with his father. As an added bonus for horror fanatics\, Hooper opens the film with a direct homage to the opening scene of 1978 slasher film Halloween\, as well as the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. \n\n\n\nStrange Brew will also present a Funhouse of Horrors pre-show when doors open at 6 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:CANCELLED -- Jan Švankmajer's ALICE (1988) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. THE FILM WILL BE RESCHEDULED AT A FUTURE DATE. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“Svankmajer’s film explores Alice in Wonderland’s dark undercurrents: it unearths the fears that animate dreams and nightmares.” – The New York Times \n\n\n\nThe dark heart of Alice in Wonderland was never more faithfully captured than by stop-motion maestro Jan Švankmajer\, who rendered its well-worn imagery into a startling new vision. By animating an array of found items—including raw meat\, taxidermy\, playing cards\, scissors\, and the like—Švankmajer crafted a Wonderland all his own\, a haunting realm of fantastic sights and disturbing juxtapositions. Hailed as a landmark of modern animation\, Alice blends the imagination of Lewis Carroll with the grotesquerie of Joel-Peter Witkin to produce an experience like no other. A truly singular work of art\, it offers a glimpse into another world\, one of joyful terrors that cavort amidst death and decay. \n\n\n\nArrive early for a preshow of spooky stop-motion from around the world\, starting at 6pm! SUMMARY:THE DEVIL'S NEEDLE (1916) and other exploitation films of the 1910s presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\nThis month\, Silents\, Please! shows that exploitation is as old as cinema itself with a salacious sensationalism from the 1910s\, featuring drug addiction drama THE DEVIL’S NEEDLE (1916)\, sex trafficking thriller THE WHITE SLAVE TRADE (1910) and more! \n\n\n\nThe Devil’s NeedleRenee (silent era legend Norma Talmadge) is a French artist’s model who uses morphine as an escape from the dull reality of her life. She recommends it to a neurotic artist because “it kindles the fires of genius.” The artist quickly becomes addicted to the drug and the quality of his work begins to disintegrate. He takes on a new model\, marries her\, and starts her on the same path of moral degradation\, until a guilt-ridden Renee decides to intervene in order to save them both. According to silent film historian Kevin Brownlow\, THE DEVIL’S NEEDLE was banned by the state of Ohio\, but the censor board reversed its decision after recognizing the positive message beneath the film’s scandalous surface. \n\n\n\nThe White Slave TradeIn this licentious Danish film\, the first multi-reeler ever produced in Denmark\, Anna\, a beautiful girl from a poor background\, is offered a well-paid position as a lady’s companion in London\, while Anna’s boyfriend\, the skeptical Georg\, suspects that the job offer is too good to be true. Anna dismisses him and reports to the London address\, but this stately English home turns out to be a whorehouse that imports women from Denmark. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:CELIA (1989) -- a rarely screened masterpiece of childhood terror presented with a creepy Australian children's TV pre-show @ 4 pm -- Fᴏʟᴋ Hᴏʀʀᴏʀ Aʀᴏᴜɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇ Wᴏʀʟᴅ
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Turner’s film is more effective that any dozen more conventional genre works. It gets under the skin like a tick\, like an infection\, like myxomatosis\, and lingers there\, dully throbbing\, driving us to pick at it and ponder.” – The Curb \n\n\n\nRarely screened in the United States since its minimal initial theatrical release\, Ann Turner’s CELIA is a dark coming-of-age masterpiece ripe for rediscovery. Too sprawling\, ambitious\, and sensitive to be simply called a horror movie yet too terrifying to be classified as anything else\, Turner’s award-winning film resists easy synopsis. Marketed as a straightforward shocker in the vein of The Bad Seed—the film’s US distributor subtitled it “CHILD OF TERROR”—the film is set in 1950s Australia\, where 9-year-old Celia hears the disturbing fairy tale of “The Hobyahs” in school\, causing her to interpret real-life conflicts such as her parents’ struggling relationship\, the threat of communism and the country’s plague of rabbits as emanations of evil. CELIA paints a disquieting picture of innocence trying to make sense of the harsh and complex world around her through escape into dark fantasy. \n\n\n\nPresented with a creepy Australian children’s TV pre-show at 4 pm! \n\n\n\nEach month\, Arkadin presents a selection of FOLK HORROR AROUND THE WORLD\, creepy folktales from all corner of the globe to give you the Sunday scaries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:SANATORIUM UNDER THE SIGN OF THE HOURGLASS (2024) -- a new film by legendary animators The Quay Brothers
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“To enter the impossible\, haunted night of a Quay Brothers film is to become complicit in one of the most perverse and obsessive acts of cinema.” – Film Comment \n\n\n\nChristopher Nolan presents this first feature in 20 years by animation masters The Quay Brothers\, a mind-altering mixture of live action and breathtakingly intricate stop-motion puppetry. Inspired by the stories of Polish author Bruno Schulz (whose tale Street of Crocodiles the Quays previously adapted)\, the film follows the journey of Josef\, who arrives at a labyrinthine sanatorium in search of his dying father. Told in seven chapters corresponding with seven prophetic\, mystical viewing lenses\, the film bends objects\, time\, and dimensions as Josef navigates the realm between dreams and reality. \n\n\n\nEach month\, DRAWN VISIONS presents an outré gem from the wild\, wonderful world of animation. Focusing on the strange\, the underseen\, and the unclassifiable\, this series proves cartoons aren’t just for kids\, they’re for total freaks too! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK (1972) presented by Strange Brew w/ Season of the Witch pre-show @ 6 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nIn All The Colors Of The Dark (Tutti i colori del buio)(1972)\, a desperate woman living in London\, Jane (Edwige Fenech)\, seeks an unconventional cure for her haunting nightmares after she loses her baby in a car accident. When professional help proves ineffective\, a mysterious new neighbor named Mary (Marina Malfatti) suggests that Jane attends a black mass that she promises will help her overcome her trauma. Unfortunately\, Jane’s life soon spirals into a chaotic cacophony of black magic and blood orgies that result in her being stalked by a dangerous\, blue-eyed killer (Ivan Rassimov). \n\n\n\nAll The Colors Of The Dark stars the stunning Edwige Fenech\, one of the most popular actresses in the commedia sexy all’italiana and giallo genres\, alongside other giallo mainstays including George Hilton and Susan Scott. The film was released with many alternate titles including Day of the Maniac and They’re Coming to Get You!. All The Colors Of The Dark is a psychedelic fever dream\, leaving the audience wondering if Jane is actually being indoctrinated by witches or if it is all just the ravings of a madwoman\, making it one of the most underappreciated masterpieces of Italian cinema. \n\n\n\nStrange Brew will also present the return of the Season of the Witch pre-show starting at 6 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Czech gothic fairy-tale horror BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1979) -- ғᴏʟᴋ ʜᴏʀʀᴏʀ ᴀʀᴏᴜɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Fairy tale becomes macabre\, visceral horror in this superb Czech version of the story.” – Close-Up Film \n\n\n\nFrom the rich and textured imagination of Czechoslovak visionary Juraj Herz (The Cremator) comes a gothic-horror reimagining of the classic fairy tale in Beauty and the Beast. Alson known as “The Virgin and the Monster\,” this unnerving dark fantasy follows the innocent Julie (Zdena Studenková) who spares her father’s (Václav Voska) life by agreeing to live under the watchful eye of a bird-like monster\, a macabre and elusive figure torn between his growing affection for the young beauty and his animalistic urge to kill. Gorgeously shot\, intriguingly surreal\, thrillingly sensual\, Beauty and the Beast is unlike any adaptation you’ve seen before. Miles away from the frolicsome family-friendliness of Walt Disney or the opulent fantasia of Renoir’s version\, Herz’s muddy\, decaying vision is very much its own Beast. SUMMARY:BUSTERPALOOZA feat. Our Hospitality + Buster Keaton shorts presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\nCelebrate the glory of silent cinema’s greatest clown\, as Silents\, Please! presents BUSTERPALOOZA! \n\n\n\nOften cited as one of his most significant films—as well as one of his funniest—1923’s Our Hospitality is his take on the notorious feud between the Hatfield and McCoy clans (here renamed the Canfields and the McKays). Keaton is luckless William McKay\, who must journey down South to view his lacklustre inheritance\, only to be seduced along the way by one of the Canfields\, Virginia\, who lures him to her family’s house so that the men of the clan can shoot him down. But William knows that the Canfield men won’t kill him as long as he’s in their house\, so he endeavors to stay put there\, against all obstacles. With its attention to 19th-century period detail and emphasis on integrating the gags into the storyline\, Our Hospitality was not just a breakthrough in Keaton’s career\, but it was also noted even during its release as an advancement in the medium\, with Variety proclaiming\, “It marks a step forward in the production of picture comedies.” \n\n\n\nPlus\, a selection of Buster Keaton’s finest and funniest shorts! DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the great haunting visions of the cinema…What Herzog sees in the story\, I think\, is what he finds in many of his films: Men haunted by a vision of great achievement\, who commit the sin of pride by daring to reach for it\, and are crushed by an implacable universe.” – Roger Ebert \n\n\n\nIn the mid-16th century\, after annihilating the Incan empire\, Pizarro leads his army of conquistadors over the Andes into the heart of the most savage environment on earth in search of the fabled city of gold\, El Dorado. As the soldiers battle starvation\, Indians\, the forces of nature\, and each other\, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski)\, “The Wrath of God\,” is consumed with visions of conquering all of South America and revolts\, leading his own army down a treacherous river on a doomed quest into oblivion. SUMMARY:TARGETS (1968) presented by Dark Dream Cinema -- SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. WAITLIST OPENS 30 MINS. BEFORE SHOWTIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“One of the most powerful films of 1968 and one of the greatest directorial debuts of all time.” – Quentin Tarantino \n\n\n\nWhen an aging classic horror star agrees to a public swan song at his final film premiere\, he unwittingly crosses paths with a damaged young man hellbent on revenge. By the time the smoke clears\, both of their lives will have been changed forever. Occupying a singular place in horror history\, Peter Bogdanovich’s Targets sketched out the genre’s future while paying respects to its past. Featuring Boris Karloff in his last American role\, this subversive classic served as the nexus point between the gothic horrors of yore and the prosaic horrors of now\, proving unexpectedly prescient by rooting itself in the everyday violence of the ‘60s. Criminally underseen to this day\, Targets has only sharpened its edge as time has proven its mettle. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nCharlie Sheen stars as a wrongly-convicted prison escapee named Jack Hammond who accidentally kidnaps wealthy heiress Natalie Voss (Kristy Swanson) while trying to flee the police in the underrated action comedy film The Chase (1994). As Jack tries to escape down a southern California highway to Mexico\, an elaborate car chase unfolds fueled by a manic tabloid reporter trying desperately to capture the story. Soon Jack is being pursued by cops being filmed for a documentary\, crazed paparazzi and bonehead vigilantes looking to be TV stars. \n\n\n\nThe Chase is nearly all car chase for its entire run time. It was a modest success during its original release in March 1994\, capitalizing on the popularity of the action and car chase genres during the decade. The soundtrack features high-adrenaline tracks from SoCal punk bands NOFX\, The Offspring\, Bad Religion and Rollins Band\, and is a great encapsulation of ’94 punk right as it was breaking into the mainstream. \n\n\n\nCoincidentally\, the film gained renewed attention later that year when O.J. Simpson was infamously chased down the Los Angeles freeway in his White Bronco by the L.A.P.D. all while being filmed by a news helicopter.  \n\n\n\nThe Chase would go on to garner a cult following for its satire on tabloid media and cop TV shows\, as well as for its cameos from alternative rock luminaries Henry Rollins as over-enthusiastic police officer Dobbs and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis and Flea as monster truck driving vigilantes Will and Dale.  \n\n\n\nA 1994 Punk Music Video Pre-Show will start at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Jean Harlow & Clark Gable in RED DUST (1932) presented by Forbidden Hollywood
\n\n\n\nAmong the steamiest of the love-in-the-tropics dramas that were a brief fad during Hollywood’s pre-Code era\, Victor Fleming’s Red Dust centers around a love triangle involving macho plantation manager Dennis Carson (Clark Gable)\, brassy prostitute Vantine (Jean Harlow)\, and prim Barbara (Mary Astor)\, an engineer’s wife joining her husband on a job in French Indochina whose arrival quickly explodes Dennis’ personal rule: no women. Red Dust’s frank embrace of extramarital relationships\, highlighted by Harlow’s topless rain barrel bath scene and made more pungent by the movie’s sweaty atmosphere\, caused little stir with the censors on its release\, serving as a sharp indicator of the level of mature content prevalent in films at the time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Bizarrely Irresistible Hungarian Animated Musical BUBBLE BATH (1980) -- ᴀ ᴅʀᴀᴡɴ ᴠɪsɪᴏɴs sᴄʀᴇᴇɴɪɴɢ
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Hungary’s third ever full-length animated feature is a true curio and a work of minor genius: a gallopingly neurotic modernist-psychedelic musical from 1979 that bubbles and pulsates with anxieties about modernity… The crazed energy is irresistible” – The Guardian \n\n\n\nBubble Bath is the bohemian animated love child of Bill Plympton and Ralph Bakshi\, touching on a wide range of styles from 1920s Art Deco to 1960s Psychedelia and 1970s louche Roxy Music-style decadence. This idiosyncratic musical from Hungarian director György Kovásznai is an indescribably strange\, personal and totally irresistible screwball sitcom. A walking ball of anxieties\, shop window decorator Zsolt is like a stoned hippie alleycat\, or an Eastern European Frank Zappa in a tux; medical student Anikó a more curvaceous post-modern Betty Boop — and both unsure of their attraction to each other\, of the choices they’ve made\, of what life has in store for them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:$3 MYSTERY MOVIE (Keith's Birthday Edition): A Bizarre Family-Friendly Black Comedy
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the last Monday of every month\, Arkadin chooses an underseen deep cut to inflict upon an unwitting audience. Though the genre and tone may change\, the price always remains the same: three measly bucks. You can’t afford not to get yourself a ticket! \n\n\n\nIt’s Keith’s 39th birthday\, and he’s feeling a little self-indulgent\, so this month’s selection is a blast from his own personal past: his very favorite film when he was 9 years old. An ostensibly family-friendly comedy\, this film is so perversely mean-spirited it could only have come from those halcyon days of questionable children’s entertainment: the nineties! With dashes of horror\, fantasy\, action\, and surprisingly harrowing family drama plus a heaping dose of Zucker-Abrahams-and-Zucker-style parody\, this is truly a film for no one. But\, through constant premium-cable daytime rotation it found a fan in one troubled young boy. Perhaps that’s not so surprising because while its commercial prospects may have been dubious\, this is a film that truly commits to a genuinely dark\, sardonic satire of American pop culture. Maybe\, just maybe\, it will grow a new following among those daring souls willing to plunk down a few bucks for the privilege of being subjected to its cynical—yet kid-appropriate!—vision. SUMMARY:LOVE GOD (1997) presented by STL Video Society w/ Underground Cinema Pre-Show @ 6:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY digs deep in its extensive archives to present the weirdest\, wildest\, most incredible VHS obscurities. Always free\, always presented by Video Society archivist James Milam! \n\n\n\n“Dazzling\, frustrating and altogether original\, LOVE GOD isn’t afraid to jump-start a fresh new way of approaching cinema.” – Steven Puchalski\, Shock Cinema Magazine \n\n\n\nJuly’s SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY PRESENTS selection\, LOVE GOD (1997)\, is a reality-bending experiment in digital filmmaking—from innovative and iconoclastic director Frank Grow. A film that’s not so much watched as experienced\, LOVE GOD’s “plot” centers around the emptying of mental hospitals in NYC\, while the head clinician searches for a slimy\, subterranean worm creature. Be warned\, it’s breakneck editing\, optical effects\, and wild puppetry may induce psychotic episodes. \n\n\n\nAfter only a handful of domestic\, film festival screenings\, LOVE GOD went far\, far underground\, with no physical media releases (not VHS\, DVD\, or Blu-Ray) in the US. Fortunately\, it was briefly released in English on Japanese VHS where its highly recommended for fans of psycho-splatter\, punk films like TETSUO: THE IRON MAN\, 964 PINOCCHIO\, and BURST CITY! \n\n\n\nThis screening is a RARE opportunity to be one of the few people to view this film theatrically\, so don’t miss out! Pre-Show at 6:30pm will feature Grow’s earlier 18min short\, RED & ROSY\, as well as a few underground cinema odds and ends. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person.
