SUMMARY:IDIOCRACY (2006) w/ American Idiot 250th Semiquincentennial Pre-show presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A movie that was originally a comedy\, but became a documentary.” – Urban Dictionary \n\n\n\nU.S. Army librarian Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson) takes part in an experimental government hibernation program that goes afoul and results in Joe reawakening five hundred years later in a painfully stupid dystopia in the cult comedy Idiocracy (2006). The inept authorities are unable to identify Joe\, leading to a correctional facility renaming him “Not Sure” before subjecting him to an aptitude test. Despite being of average intelligence in his own time\, he returns the highest IQ in the world from this basic aptitude test in the year 2505. Soon the President of the United States\, Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho (Terry Crews) tasks “Not Sure” with fixing the country’s food supply\, economy and massive dust storms within a week under threat of imprisonment.  \n\n\n\nDirected by Mike Judge (Beavis and Butthead\, Office Space)\, Idiocracy was given a limited release by 20th Century Fox in 2006. The studio seemingly intentionally buried the film\, providing virtually no movie trailers\, ads or press kits\, and resulting in a less than $500\,000 box office in its limited theatrical run. However\, the film has since gone on to garner a devoted cult fanbase with its parody of dysgenics\, corporate sponsored politics and anti-intellectualism. Idiocracy also stars Maya Rudolph as Rita the sex worker and Dax Shepard as Frito the Lawyer.    \n\n\n\nAn American Idiot 250th Semiquincentennial Preshow starts at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:DOPE (2015) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nIn Dope (2015)\, Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is a nerdy kid trying to survive high school in “The Bottoms” a tough neighborhood in Inglewood\, California. Malcolm is obsessed with ’90s hip hop and fashion and dreams of going to Harvard University after high school. When Malcolm and his two best friends\, Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons)\, get an invite to an underground party by the local drug dealer Dom (A$AP Rocky) their lives get turned upside down when they mistakenly take home a backpack full of drugs.   \n\n\n\nThis low budget coming-of-age film was released in summer 2015\, and though it was critically-praised\, it was mostly overlooked during an era of comic book blockbuster mania. Dope\, directed by Rick Famuyiwa\, is an under-seen gem that captures the essence of classic John Hughes teen dramas like The Breakfast Club mixed with the grit of John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood but for a Gen Z audience. The film features the debut acting role of Shameik Moore\, as well as a standout performance from Zoë Kravitz\, narration from Forest Whitaker\, original songs by Pharrell\, and a cameo from Blake Anderson of Workaholics. Dope also features a time-capsule subplot involving the rise of Bitcoin just as it was beginning to enter mainstream usage.   \n\n\n\nA ’90s Hip Hop Preshow will start at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE CRITTERS CUT presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrange Brew cult movies presents one of the most bizarre double features ever conceived: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Critters Cut\, coming to Arkadin Cinema for one night only on Saturday\, May 2.  \n\n\n\nTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Critters have been combined into one giant supercut full of surprises. “Where do they come up with this stuff?” \n\n\n\nTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adapts the popular Eastman and Laird underground comic book following the adventures of four mutated turtles living in the sewers of NYC as they try to rescue their master\, a rat name Splinter who raised them and trained them in martial arts\, against their arch-rival\, the Shredder\, and his criminal organization\, the Foot Clan. Directed by Steve Barron\, the film features Jim Henson’s final costume designs made before his death. The film was a huge box office success during its original release in 1990 and held the record for highest grossing independent film for nearly a decade.   \n\n\n\nCritters finds a group of small\, fluffy alien monsters called Krites landing in a rural Kansas town\, terrorizing a family’s farm house. The Krites are followed by a shapeshifting bounty hunter who poses as a new wave rocker named Johnny Steele. Critters\, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year\, inspired a franchise of four more horror comedy sequels. \n\n\n\nTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – The Critters Cut was conceived and edited by Jon Scorfina of Strange Brew and Michael Morlaine of Dark Dream Cinema. Toy Division STL will have a Ninja Turtle Pop-up Toy Shop in the Arkadin Lobby starting at 6:30 pm.  \n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nA forensic scientist named Brenda (Roxanne Hart) investigates a string of mysterious beheadings in New York City and believes a reclusive antique dealer with the alias Russell Nash (Christopher Lambert) might be the prime suspect in the cult fantasy HIGHLANDER. As she gets closer to Russell\, he reveals the unbelievable story that he is truly Connor MacLeod\, an immortal born in the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century who is in a multi-century battle with other immortals who must be beheaded until only one remains. Sean Connery plays Ramirez\, Connor’s mentor and fellow immortal friend\, and Clancy Brown plays The Kurgan\, a 16th-century sadistic barbarian turned modern NYC street punk\, who has challenged Connor for the ultimate prize: to be the final immortal! \n\n\n\nDirector Russell Mulcahy\, a popular music video director\, cast lead actor Christopher Lambert after finding his picture in a magazine — not knowing the actor did not speak English and would have to learn the language during the brief period between landing the role and filming began. SUMMARY:Drew Barrymore in POISON IVY (1992) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\n“Why settle for the usual walk around the exploitation block when [Poison Ivy] offers a wild ride with the top down into uncharted territory?” – Rolling Stone \n\n\n\nDrew Barrymore stars as a seductive teenager nicknamed “Ivy” who befriends an introverted high school student named Sylvie (Sara Gilbert) and cons her way into her wealthy family in POISON IVY (1992). Sylvie and Ivy quickly become best friends. Ivy moves into Sylvie’s family’s home and the two girls begin exchanging clothes and even share a bed. Ivy ultimately helps Sylvie come out of her withdrawn shell. However\, Ivy deviously charms Sylvie’s chronically ill mother (Cheryl Ladd) and develops an uncomfortable relationship with her father (Tom Skerritt)\, a recovering alcoholic; soon sinister cracks in their friendship and family devolve into something more deadly. \n\n\n\nDirected by Katt Shea\, POISON IVY became the perfect vehicle for Drew Barrymore to return from a brief acting hiatus and transition from a troubled\, child actress into more adult roles. Billed as an erotic thriller during the genre’s 1990s heyday — distributor New Line Cinema even described the film as “a teenage Fatal Attraction\,” — POISON IVY has recently been reinterpreted and embraced as a tragic sapphic romance. POISON IVY was initially a box office bomb but became a word-of-mouth cult classic\, spawning three direct-to-video sequels and landing the character Ivy on Entertainment Weekly’s list of cinema’s top “bad girls.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person.
