SUMMARY:Lon Chaney Speaks in THE UNHOLY THREE (1930) -- Free Public Domain Day Screening presented by WashU Libraries
DESCRIPTION:RESERVE SEATS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery January\, new batches of old books\, music\, and films enter the public domain\, which makes them free for distribution and reimagining. To celebrate films from 1930 becoming available\, WashU is proud to present a FREE screening of Lon Chaney’s only talkie\, The Unholy Three\, on 16mm! \n\n\n\n“The finest thing about this picture is that it discloses Lon Chaney’s natural voice just exactly as it should be—deep\, vibrant\, and perfectly poised.” – Photoplay \n\n\n\nA sound remake of the Tod Browning 1925 silent version\, Chaney reprises his role as the villainous Echo\, ventriloquist leader of a criminal gang of sideshow performers (a Tod Browning set up if ever one existed). Harry Earles also returns as a belligerent co-conspirator. Their con involves a bunch of disguises and a pet shop and… a gorilla (man in a suit)? It’s a bit convoluted and melodramatic\, but a fun Pre-Code crime spree nonetheless! For his only speaking role\, MGM marketed the star as “the Man of a Thousand Voices.” Chaney also signed a sworn affidavit attesting that all the voices used in the film for his various disguise are his. \n\n\n\nThis screening is free\, but we recommend reserving tickets in advance to ensure a seat. \n\n\n\nPrint courtesy of Indiana University’s Lilly Library’s David Bradley Collection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. Information about content can also be found on Common Sense Media\, IMDB and DoesTheDogDie.com\, as well as through general internet searches. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. We follow the MPAA rating guidelines for all other films.\n\n\n\nTickets can be purchased using the BUY TICKETS link above. Upon ordering\, you will receive a confirmation email from Square. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the show at the concession counter.\n\n\n\nIf you’ve purchased advance tickets\, when you arrive\, please give your name at the concession counter to check in. \n\n\n\nTickets are returnable by sending a request through the contact form located on our About Us page prior to showtime.\n\n\n\nWhen an event is sold out\, we reserve the right to release open seats to customers on the waitlist. If you have a pre-purchased ticket and arrive late and there is no seat for you\, your ticket will be refunded.\n\n\n\nAll screenings are held in our indoor theater unless indicated otherwise in the event description above.\n\n\n\nPlease respect your fellow movie-goers by remaining quiet and refraining from using your cell phone throughout the screening.

SUMMARY:THE RULES OF ATTRACTION (2002) w/ Dawson's Creek pilot pre-show
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Somewhere between a black romantic comedy and a psychosexual horror show\, it’s a film so delightfully bratty that it could be easy to miss what lies beneath… The Rules of Attraction brims with doomed yearning.” – The Guardian \n\n\n\nRIP James Van Der Beek. While he embodied the sensitive hunk archetype on beloved teen soap opera Dawson’s Creek and in the football drama Varsity Blues\, Van Der Beek went fully against type in Roger Avary’s deliriously stylish adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ nihilistic cult novel THE RULES OF ATTRACTION. Forget everything you thought you knew about Dawson Leery and higher education. Making his directorial debut\, Avary\, the Oscar-winning co-writer of Pulp Fiction\, takes you back to school and drops you in the middle of the drugged-out\, sexed-up lives of (fictional) Camden College’s most disaffected students. Van Der Beek plays Sean Bateman\, a womanizing drug dealer whose quest for some kind of connection brings him face-to-face with Lauren (Shannyn Sossamon)\, a shy girl looking for love but saving herself for the much sought after Victor (Kip Pardue) while Paul Denton (Ian Somerhalder) wants to make a connection of his own…with Sean. With a kitted-out visual style that employs split screens\, in-your-face montage\, and too-cool-for-school needle drops\, THE RULES OF ATTRACTION is fast-paced and funny even when its characters’ lives are spinning out of control. Roger Avary and Bret Easton Ellis may not have exactly covered themselves in glory over the past couple decades\, but this darkly funny satire of life\, love and the pursuit of debauchery remains a compellingly fatalistic plunge into the deep end of depravity as well as an impeccable time capsule of early-’00s fads and fashions. \n\n\n\nTo fully celebrate Van Der Beek (as well as his millennial-icon co-stars Katie Holmes\, Joshua Jackson\, and Michelle Williams)\, we’ll be presenting the full pilot episode of Dawson’s Creek before the film\, starting at 6:15 pm. Doors open at 6 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:WORLD WIDE MAGAZINE: 40th Anniversary screening of the 1st episode (Every Day I Use Up A Year’s Worth Of Luck) -- 314 Day!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn celebration of 314 Day in St. Louis\, Jim Varagona of The Pete Parisi Archives will introduce this screening of the very first episode of WORLD WIDE MAGAZINE! \n\n\n\n2026 marks 40 years since WWM debuted on public access television in St. Louis. While the show became known for its cast of characters\, the early episodes were centered on Pete\, the people that he’d meet\, and the goofy things he’d do. When he first submitted some “movies” that he’d made to STL Cable\, there was no WORLD WIDE MAGAZINE. Episode 1 is entitled Every Day I Use Up A Year’s Worth Of Luck. You’ll see Pete\, the cabbie\, taking his cab around town and interacting with riders. You will see his girlfriend Denise\, who helps him deliver some jokes. The fun of this episode\, aside from Pete’s playful personality early on\, is in seeing the characters that he interacts with\, not knowing they’d end up on TV\, and the places that he goes to that are no more\, like Famous Barr\, the Coral Court Motel\, National supermarket\, and Kroger (yes\, it used to be in St. Louis!). \n\n\n\nWorld Wide Magazine was a public access television program that ran in St. Louis from 1986-2001. Its creator was Peter Parisi who had a previous life in St. Louis radio before the show. The show is a variety of man-on-the-street segments\, goofy skits\, and a collective of colorful characters that gathered around Pete as the years went by. It is weird\, funny\, edgy\, and offensive\, but undoubtedly unforgettable. Since Parisi passed in 2002\, it has gained an additional following from its growing archives on YouTube. \n\n\n\nWe hope to have several members of the cast in attendance for some Q & A.  \n\n\n\nAll ticket sales go support the further digitization of shows from the archive. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with LEPRECHAUN IN THE HOOD (2000)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“[T]he Gaelic gargoyle becomes a blunt-smoking\, boot-knocking playa with a couple of grudges to settle… Bloody\, broad\, and comically brutal\, it’s blaxploitation at its best.” – Entertainment Weekly \n\n\n\nIf it’s St. Patrick’s Day\, that means it’s Leprechaun Day at Arkadin! We continue our annual tradition of screening each increasing absurd entry in the silliest slasher series of them all with the most outrageous entry yet—LEPRECHAUN IN THE HOOD. Our favorite tiny Irish terror has been to Vegas\, he’s gone to space\, but you’ve never seen him like this: rampaging through South Central\, making his mark on the hip hop game after a trio of aspiring rappers accidentally steal his magic flute. Warwick Davis chews all the scenery in sight once more as the rhyme-spitting diminutive demon\, and Ice-T co-stars as music mogul Mack Daddy O’Nassas. It’s all as absurd\, bloody\, and unhinged as you’d hope for\, a priceless direct-to-video treasure from a bygone era of gleeful bad taste. SUMMARY:Weird\, wild erotic thriller ANYTHING THAT MOVES (2025) + live Q&A w/ director Alex Phillips
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Weird…very funny…sex positive…John Waters would be proud.” – In Review Online \n\n\n\nAn avant-gutter psychedelic dream from STL-raised filmmaker Alex Phillips\, the madman behind All Jacked Up and Full of Worms\, ANYTHING THAT MOVES is an erotically charged\, blood-soaked thriller set in the sticky corridors of Chicago. Shot on fleshy Super 16mm\, director Alex Phillips’ rust belt giallo continues on his trajectory of taboo-shattering horror cinema with this tense\, funny\, and absolutely twisted murder mystery. The film follows nubile sex worker Liam who bikes with his girlfriend—his partner in both business and pleasure—through the city delivering snacks and divine satisfaction to his love-hungry clients. Meanwhile\, a serial killer’s gory murders are piling up and all the evidence seems to point back to the lover’s bed… Produced in collaboration with cult home video outfit Vinegar Syndrome\, the film features stand-out supporting performances from erotic film legends Ginger Lynn and Nina Hartley. With an original instrumental score by Chicago-based artists Cue Shop calling to mind the lush orchestrations of Bruno Nicolai and lurid visuals by acclaimed cinematographer Hunter Zimny\, ANYTHING THAT MOVES provides an immersive throwback to 70s exploitation flicks. \n\n\n\nPLUS after the film we’ll have an in-person Q&A with St. Louis-raised director Alex Phillips! \n\n\n\n“One of the sexiest movies of 2025! And now for something completely insane… It’s never boring and occasionally beautiful\, like during one of those incestuous three-ways that takes place at a club under an endlessly changing array of rainbow lights.” – Esquire \n\n\n\n“Chaotic\, raunchy\, and weirdly sweet for its bursts of violence. Sure\, there’s a serial killer on the loose\, but there’s also a purity of heart in Liam’s embrace of sexual freedom\, and the solidarity of those who join him on their kink-friendly journeys.” – RogerEbert.com \n\n\n\n“★★★★½ Alex Phillips’ follow-up to the unforgettable All Jacked Up And Full Of Worms is a love letter to [vintage pornography] as much as it is a spoof.” – Eye on Film \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:STARCRASH (1978) -- the greatest Star Wars rip-off in the universe
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A headfirst dive into pulp serial lala land. A genre kaleidoscope\, a sci-fi lava lamp\, gorgeous people giving fractured performances\, weird looking people giving weird performances\, and various other analog magicks. Only an Italian could lack the self-consciousness to make something so silly and pure.” – laird\, Letterboxd \n\n\n\nA long time ago (the late 1970s) in a nation far\, far away (Italy)…schlockmaestro Luigi Cozzi created the greatest Star Wars knockoff in the universe! STARCRASH may take George Lucas’s international mega-hit as its jumping off point\, but the film soon finds its way to the far reaches of sci-fi psychedelia. A Flash Gordon serial trapped inside a groovy lava lamp\, this wacked-out space opera features insane stop-motion monsters\, sword-fighting clockwork machines\, and an endless array of devastating intergalactic gibberish. And then there’s the cast! former Bond girl Caroline Munro leads a motley crew that includes child evangelical/scam artist/hippie icon Marjoe Gortner as a perma-permed Luke Skywalker clone\, Oscar winner Christopher Plummer as The Emperor of the Galaxy\, Baywatch hunk David Hasselhoff\, and the Maniac himself\, Joe Spinell. PLUS! Holograms! Bikini-clad Amazons! A robot with a Texas accent! We’ve known you’ve seen all the legit Star Wars movies a million times—why not check out the movie George Lucas would’ve made if he was a certifiably insane Italian genre merchant. May the Fourth be with you! \n\n\n\nLETTERBOXD TAKES“the best genre of movie is ‘completely indistinguishable from a group of 7 year olds playing with action figures'” —sydney“You can’t accuse the Starcrash team of underdoing it\, that’s for sure. I mean\, here you have yourself a wholesale Star Wars cash-in featuring toy spaceships\, redneck robots\, angry amazons\, space cavemen\, dollar-store lightsabers\, green traitors\, busty metal golems\, skinny swordfighting droids\, super-powers ex machina\, Marjoe Gortner in a giant perm\, Joe Spinell in a cape\, Christopher Plummer in a hologram\, and Caroline Munro in like 25 different plastic-based sort-of outfits. This movie tries to do absolutely everything at once and doesn’t do a single thing remotely well and becomes a near-perfect artifact of pure entertainment in the process. And David Hasselhoff.” —Ira Booker“One star. DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Jason Pappariella’s ‘places in pieces’ series present rich visual ideas that feel familiar\, yet unorthodox within the framework of an abstract travelogue” – Michael Robinson\, Moviate \n\n\n\nFilmmaker Jason Pappariella joins us to present his newest work\, places in pieces vol. 4 as he tours it across the eastern United States. SUMMARY:DEADBEAT AT DAWN (1988) -- Free!
DESCRIPTION:“Jim Van Bebber’s shot-on-16mm masterpiece came careening out of Dayton\, Ohio in 1988 like a runaway lawnmower blade\, setting the standard for all nihilist street-gang movies to follow. Visceral\, unspeakably violent\, and fearless\, Van Bebber could have easily lost his life making this film. You may lose yours watching it.” — Austin Film Society \n\n\n\nThe absolute definition of DIY filmmaking\, DEADBEAT AT DAWN is a cult classic that deserves the moniker — an indie revenge movie with more thrills and bloody spills than all of Chuck Norris’ films combined. ‘80s visionary wunderkind Jim Van Bebber wrote\, directed\, did stunts and makeup FX for and starred in this raucous tale of Goose: a former gang leader whose girlfriend is slaughtered when he leaves the thug life behind.
