SUMMARY:NAKED KILLER (1992) -- cult classic action thriller about lesbian assassins who shoot men in the dick -- Friday Night WTF -- just $5!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Night WTF screenings are cheap\, weird\, and out of control! Cult trashterpieces\, so-bad-they’re-good crapfests\, movies that make you ask “What the hell am I watching?!” — we’ve got ’em all on Friday night. \n\n\n\nThey’re beautiful. They’re perfect. They’re to DIE for! A supercharged erotic action adventure combining elements of La Femme Nikita and Basic Instinct\, NAKED KILLER is one of the most infamous entries in one of the most notorious subcategories of cinema history\, Hong Kong Category III films! Deliciously sleazy yet surprisingly crowd-pleasing\, NAKED KILLER is a bloody\, scintillating thriller about a violent young woman named Kitty (Chingmy Yau) who is trained as a professional assassin by martial arts expert Sister Cindy (Wai Yiu)\, but affairs are complicated by Kitty’s relationship with impotent police detective Tinam (Simon Yan) and fellow female assassin Princess (Carrie Ng)\, who becomes erotically obsessed with her. Featuring all the dick stabbing and boob fondling you could possibly want\, NAKED KILLER is a true cult classic. \n\n\n\n“Not only has Naked Killer just become one of my favourite Hong Kong category III movies of all time\, but it’s now also one of my favourite movies in general ever!… I want at least ten more of these over-the-top sapphic action movies where women shoot men in the dick and then fondle each other afterwards.” – Lou (rhymes with wow!)\, Letterboxd \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:PONYBOI (2024) -- "a first for intersex representation onscreen"
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The thing you need to know about Ponyboi is that it’s so fucking fun. It’s true writer and star River Gallo has crafted a movie with intersex representation unlike anything we’ve seen before… But\, my God\, is this film FUN… Ponyboi is a queer cinema genre pastiche that understands a movie can be artful\, emotional\, and incredibly entertaining.” – Autostraddle \n\n\n\nArkadin is thrilled to present this brand-new release as part of its 2025 Pride program! Unfolding over the course of Valentine’s Day in New Jersey\, PONYBOI is a neon-drenched neo-noir set in the Motorola Razr-flipping days of the early ’00s New Jersey. River Gallo stars as Ponyboi\, a young intersex sex worker on the run from the mob after a drug deal goes sideways\, forcing him to confront his past. Co-written by Gallo\, who adapted their own short film\, PONYBOI is a deeply personal work for Gallo and and a groundbreaking work of intersex representation. Co-starring Dylan O’Brien as Ponyboi’s goofball pimp Vinny and Victoria Pedretti as Vinny’s pregnant girlfriend\, PONYBOI is a showcase for Gallo’s electrifying lead performance. But it’s also a thrilling genre exercise peppered with dark humor\, fantasy\, and a deeply felt sense of time and place. \n\n\n\n\n“A first for intersex representation onscreen” – Pajiba \n\n\n\n“A sexy\, sweaty fever dream” – The Hollywood Reporter \n\n\n\n“One hell of a wild\, intense ride through New Jersey’s underbelly” – Screen Zealots \n\n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s month-long celebration of PRIDE\, showcasing a wide array of queer classics\, cult favorites\, and underseen gems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:$3 MYSTERY MOVIE: A Weird\, Wild\, Totally Offbeat Road Movie
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the last Monday of every month\, Arkadin chooses an underseen deep cut to inflict upon an unwitting audience. Though the genre and tone may change\, the price always remains the same: three measly bucks. You can’t afford not to get yourself a ticket! \n\n\n\nOur June Mystery Movie is a highly unusual yet remarkably entertaining journey into the festering underbelly of the American dream. Imagine Pee-wee’s Big Adventure if it were directed by David Lynch and…well… maybe that’s not exactly what this is\, but it’s as close as one can come to describing this truly singular offbeat gem\, a forgotten mid-budget indie road movie with an incredibly stacked cast. Laden with absurdist humor\, surrealistic touches\, and a basic premise that must be seen to be believed\, this should-be cult classic will leave you wondering\, “Who exactly were they making this movie for?” The answer: weirdos like you and me. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:EASY RIDER (1969) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nIn Easy Rider\, two bikers named Wyatt “Captain America” (Peter Fonda) & Billy (Dennis Hopper) head from California to New Orleansfor the Mardi Gras festival after scoring a large sum of money smuggling cocaine from Mexico. Their cross-country motorcycle quest finds them searching for the true meaning of freedom in the heart of America in the late 1960s. The film was written by Peter Fonda\, Dennis Hopper and Terry Southern\, and directed by Dennis Hopper. Easy Rider co-stars Jack Nicholson who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award. Nicholson now credits his standout performance in the film for making him a bona fide movie star.  \n\n\n\nEasy Rider is largely responsible for ushering in the New Hollywood movement of the late ’60s through the ’70s in America. Independently produced with a paltry budget of $400\,000\, the film returned a staggering $60 million at the box office\, proving to the major Hollywood studios that low-budget films with young directors and counterculture ideals could yield a major return on investment. Now the film stands as an iconic generational touchstone as well as a snapshot into the late ’60s hippie movement\, motorcycle clubs\, drug culture and communal lifestyles. In 1998\, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant.” \n\n\n\n“Easy Rider is the single greatest example of counterculture cinema.” – Quentin Tarantino \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955) presented by Dark Dream Cinema -- Sold Out!
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. A WAITLIST WILL OPEN IN THE LOBBY 30 MINUTES BEFORE START TIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“Many great movies are realistic\, but The Night of the Hunter is an expressionistic oddity\, telling its chilling story through visual fantasy.” Roger Ebert \n\n\n\nJohn and Pearl have a secret\, and the Rev. Harry Powell will stop at nothing to find out what it is. From gliding through brackish backwaters to taking shelter in rural safe havens\, these two lost lambs venture far and wide to escape the gaze of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. \n\n\n\nThe sole entry in Charles Laughton’s directorial career\, this singular classic provided Robert Mitchum with his defining role and inspired homages in everything from Do the Right Thing to The Simpsons. The crown jewel of American gothic cinema\, The Night of the Hunter has earned suitable acclaim as one of the most lush\, dreamlike\, and visually poetic films ever made. Tickets for this event always go fast so get ’em while they’re hot! \n\n\n\n“A must-see for its perfect mix of 90s charm\, genuine scares\, and timeless appeal” – JoBlo \n\n\n\nIf Scream deconstructed the slasher template\, I Know What You Did Last Summer showed you can still squeeze plenty of chills out of dogged adherence to the formula: Gather a bunch of pretty young actors and pick them off one-by-one with sadistic glee. And the actors don’t come much prettier than this absolute who’s-who of ’90s heartthrobs: Sarah Michelle Gellar\, Freddie Prinze Jr.\, Ryan Phillippe\, and of course Jennifer Love Hewitt. On July 4\, 1996\, four friends driving on an isolated road smash their car into a mysterious figure that seems to emerge from nowhere\, and they make a pact that will change their lives for the bloodier. A box-office smash in its day\, IKWYDLS spawned two sequels as well as a brand-new reboot\, but the original hook-hand slash-’em-up will always have a place in our hearts as one of the most purely fun horror flicks of the ’90s\, the perfect movie to enjoy while lazing in your kiddie pool as Bevo’s annual bootleg fireworks display explodes overhead! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Steamy French Thriller Classic LA PISCINE (1969) w/ '60s French Pop Pre-Show @ 4:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Involves four of the most outrageously photogenic actors to ever appear on screen… We sit and revel in the glamour of it all\, waiting for those hormonal and homicidal impulses to boil over – as\, of course\, they do.” – Senses of Cinema \n\n\n\nThe bright sun of the French Riviera is deceptive in this alluring work of slow-burn suspense from thriller specialist Jacques Deray and legendary screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière. Formerly one of European cinema’s most iconic real-life couples\, Alain Delon and Romy Schneider reunited for this film\, bringing a palpable erotic chemistry to their performances as the bronzed and beautiful vacationers whose summer holiday on the Côte d’Azur is interrupted by the arrival of an old acquaintance (Maurice Ronet) and his eighteen-year-old daughter (Jane Birkin)—unleashing a gathering wave of sexual tension\, jealousy\, and sudden violence. A paragon of 1960s modernist cool thanks to effortlessly chic clothes and a loungy Michel Legrand score\, La piscine dives deep to reveal sinister undercurrents roiling beneath its seductive surfaces. \n\n\n\nIn honor of Legrand’s impossibly groovy score\, we’ll have a curated pre-show of ’60s French Pop music before the film\, starting at 4:30 pm. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s POOL PARTY series\, featuring movies that allow you to beat the summer heat (vicariously) by taking a dip in the cool waters of a swimming pool\, even as mystery\, murder and heartbreak lurk on the horizon… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:HIPS\, HIPS\, HOORAY! (1934) presented by Forbidden Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForbidden Hollywood is a monthly series hosted by STL film critic Katie Carter celebrating the Pre-Code films of the early 1930s\, when movies were wild\, racy\, transgressive\, and tons of fun. \n\n\n\nOne thing the 1934 pre-Code musical comedy Hips\, Hips\, Hooray! can’t be accused of is not delivering on its title: there are hips galore\, as evidenced by the bevy of scantily-clad female cast members who saunter across the screen\, and plenty of hooray in the film’s zany plot turns (it’s about rival cosmetics companies\, sort of)\, borderline deranged song-and-dance numbers\, and cornball sense of humor. Directed for RKO by Mark Sandrich (who went on to helm several of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ most famous vehicles) and starring Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey — a wildly popular comedy team in the early 1930s whose short-lived career means they haven’t sustained the legacy of some of their contemporaries — Hips\, Hips\, Hooray! showcases the duo’s brand of sexual comedy at its peak\, with comedienne Thelma Todd\, torch singer Ruth Etting\, and Wheeler and Woolsey regular Dorothy Lee providing ample support. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT -- Charlie Chaplin's THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. WAITLIST OPENS 30 MIN. BEFORE SHOWTIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\nIn his controversial masterpiece The Great Dictator\, Charlie Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin\, in his first pure talkie\, brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish “Tomainian” dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Featuring Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in stellar supporting turns\, The Great Dictator\, boldly going after the fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II\, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8bVG8XC-4I\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:LOVE GOD (1997) presented by STL Video Society w/ Underground Cinema Pre-Show @ 6:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY digs deep in its extensive archives to present the weirdest\, wildest\, most incredible VHS obscurities. Always free\, always presented by Video Society archivist James Milam! \n\n\n\n“Dazzling\, frustrating and altogether original\, LOVE GOD isn’t afraid to jump-start a fresh new way of approaching cinema.” – Steven Puchalski\, Shock Cinema Magazine \n\n\n\nJuly’s SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY PRESENTS selection\, LOVE GOD (1997)\, is a reality-bending experiment in digital filmmaking—from innovative and iconoclastic director Frank Grow. A film that’s not so much watched as experienced\, LOVE GOD’s “plot” centers around the emptying of mental hospitals in NYC\, while the head clinician searches for a slimy\, subterranean worm creature. Be warned\, it’s breakneck editing\, optical effects\, and wild puppetry may induce psychotic episodes. \n\n\n\nAfter only a handful of domestic\, film festival screenings\, LOVE GOD went far\, far underground\, with no physical media releases (not VHS\, DVD\, or Blu-Ray) in the US. Fortunately\, it was briefly released in English on Japanese VHS where its highly recommended for fans of psycho-splatter\, punk films like TETSUO: THE IRON MAN\, 964 PINOCCHIO\, and BURST CITY! \n\n\n\nThis screening is a RARE opportunity to be one of the few people to view this film theatrically\, so don’t miss out! Pre-Show at 6:30pm will feature Grow’s earlier 18min short\, RED & ROSY\, as well as a few underground cinema odds and ends. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A surreal\, satirical descent to the dark side of English gamesmanship. It is a brilliant black comedy.” – Maclean’s \n\n\n\nBefore his international breakthrough The Cook\, the Thief\, His Wife & Her Lover\, writer/director Peter Greenaway – “one of the most distinctive\, provocative talents of his generation” (The Guardian) – shocked and delighted audiences with this slyly deranged black comedy classic. Joan Plowright\, Juliet Stevenson\, and Joely Richardson star as three generations of women who murder their husbands in an unsettling salvo of sumptuous visuals\, macabre capers and numerical mischief. A film about mordant game-playing\, DROWNING BY NUMBERS is a game itself\, a kind of I Spy book in cinematic form\, with numbers 1 through 100 embedded in sequential order within the film’s lavish imagery and baroque dialogue. SUMMARY:FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH (1982)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“An all-time teen comedy classic!” -InSession Film \n\n\n\nThe wild world of adolescence has rarely been captured with as sharp an observational eye as in this refreshingly smart\, frank spin on the teen comedy by director Amy Heckerling (Clueless) and screenwriter Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous\, screening later this month!)—for each of whom it kicked off a hugely successful film career. Based on Crowe’s experiences going undercover as a student at a Southern California high school\, Fast Times at Ridgemont High blends hormone-fueled hilarity with an almost sociological examination of the 1980s teenage experience: the shopping mall hangouts\, fast-food jobs\, buzzkill teachers\, awkward dates\, and first experiences of love and sex. This pop-culture touchstone launched to stardom practically an entire cast of unknowns—including Jennifer Jason Leigh\, Phoebe Cates\, Judge Reinhold\, Forest Whitaker\, Anthony Edwards\, Eric Stoltz\, and Sean Penn as stoner icon Jeff Spicoli—and broke new ground in its raw yet sensitive depiction of the realities of coming of age. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s POOL PARTY series\, featuring movies that allow you to beat the summer heat (vicariously) by taking a dip in the cool waters of a swimming pool\, even as mystery\, murder and heartbreak lurk on the horizon… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Body Horror Shocker SOCIETY (1989) -- Friday Night WTF -- $5
\n\n\n\nAfter producing Stuart Gordon’s hit Re-Animator\, Brian Yuzna turned his hand to directing with 1989’s SOCIETY\, and gave birth to one of the ickiest\, most original body horror shockers of all time. Teenager Bill Whitney (Billy Warlock) has always felt like the odd one out in his wealthy\, upper-class Beverly Hills family. For some reason\, he just doesn’t seem to fit in. But his sense of alienation takes a sinister turn when he hears an audio recording of his sister’s coming-out party\, which seems to implicate his family and others in a bizarre\, ritualistic orgy. And then there are the strange things he’s been seeing – glimpses of people with their bodies contorted impossibly out of shape… Is Bill going mad or is there something seriously amiss in his neighborhood? Packing stomach-churning gore and thought-provoking social commentary in equal measure\, SOCIETY is a biting horror satire which culminates in the most gag-inducing “climax”‘ in all of horror history.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE TRAGEDY OF MAN (2011) -- A kaleidoscopic animated masterpiece 23 years in the making!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A visual masterpiece…the true definition of a magnum opus.” – The Land of Obscusion \n\n\n\nAn incredible 23 years in the making\, THE TRAGEDY OF MAN is the legendary Hungarian animator Marcell Jankovics’s (Son of the White Mare\, which screened at Arkadin in 2021) sprawling\, kaleidoscopic masterwork: a seemingly-endless animated scroll of gorgon-like demons\, cave paintings that spring to life\, barbarian warriors\, bejeweled pharaohs\, knights and martyrs and prophets bleeding together — one brutal age dissolving into another and another\, all of human history passing like pages in a flipbook.   \n\n\n\nAdapted from the dramatic poem by 19th century author Imre Madách that’s often compared to Goethe’s Faust and Milton’s Paradise Lost\, THE TRAGEDY OF MAN is no children’s cartoon: it’s one of the most visually stunning and wildly ambitious animated epics ever made (and then some).  Out of the galactic void at the beginning of the story emerges Lucifer the Devil\, the Great Winged Bat\, Anubis\, the antagonist who adopts many faces and forms as it guides and manipulates the characters of Adam and Eve throughout history\, searching for the purpose of human existence — if there is one.   \n\n\n\nBroken into 15 different episodes (the segments were produced one at a time by Jankovics as he cobbled together funding)\, each section has a different visual style\, incorporating a mindblowing tapestry of world art\, cultures\, symbols\, and rituals.  In ancient Egypt\, the bodies of slaves become the literal building blocks of the pyramids – in ancient Greece\, the background shatters like broken pottery – in Rome\, mosaics of gladiators come to life\, slashing at each other – in the Middle Ages\, arguing zealots are transformed into Orthodox churches\, clashing against one another as they crumble.   \n\n\n\nThe sum total of Jankovics’s cosmic vision of human “progress” is utterly surreal\, psychedelic\, operatic and Wagnerian:  a breathtaking Hieronymus Bosch-like triptych of Hell on Earth\, with brief glimpses of Grace and Love which may offer hope for the future.  As Adam\, in the guise of the German astronomer Johannes Kepler\, whispers:  “In this world I have need of nothing except the night and shining stars\, the secret harmony of the spheres.”   \n\n\n\nIn Hungarian with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:Trippy\, metaphysical sci-fi dream AUGUST IN THE WATER (1995) w/ Japanese sci-fi animation pre-show @ 4:30 pm -- $5
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Trippy\, metaphysical\, an otherworldly gem…a hallucinatory analysis of coming-of-age malaise” – DAZED \n\n\n\nAn indescribable mix of teen melodrama\, New Age metaphysics\, dreamy sci-fi\, and creeping J-horror\, Gakuryū Ishii’s AUGUST IN THE WATER is truly a film unlike any other. Moving from the microscale insularity of teen romance and friendship to the eternal enigmas of the cosmos\, AUGUST IN THE WATER juxtaposes mysterious phenomena—outbursts of supernovae\, celestial misalignments and twin meteorites with ancient glyphs—with the arrival of transfer student Izumi (Rena Komine). A high dive prodigy\, the mysterious girl becomes entangled with the pensive Mao (Shinsuke Aoki)\, but a diving accident leaves her changed. Beset by strange events—drought\, a blistering heat wave and a disease that turns people to stone—Mao joins the convalescing Izumi\, now awakened to a heightened consciousness\, to search for the source of this cosmic disequilibrium. An evocative daydream infused with the enigma of existence\, Ishii’s mid-1990s masterwork is a primordial rite of passage\, awash in cloudburst and myth. \n\n\n\nCome out before the film for a pre-show of Japanese animated sci-fi shorts at 4:30 pm. SUMMARY:Feminist body horror IN MY SKIN (2002) -- Art House Theater Day screening!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin is proud to present this screening as part of Art House Theater Day! AHTD is an annual program of AHC that brings audiences together to celebrate all that art house theaters – and independent film – contribute to our cultural landscape: ambitious and innovative art that provokes\, challenges\, entertains\, and inspires. \n\n\n\n“An uncommonly assured and provocative debut\, as gorgeous as it is gruesome.” – Time Out New York \n\n\n\nFeminism and French New Extremity have always been a powerfully potent combination in the hands of female directors like Catherine Breillat and Claire Denis\, and auteur Marina de Van joined their righteously twisted ranks with her gorgeous and grotesque 2002 horror breakthrough IN MY SKIN. Esther has been recovering from a recent leg injury when she develops an increasingly disturbing relationship with her body\, one where the lines between painful pleasure and self-mutilation become irrevocably blurred. Body horror filtered through serrated expectations of body image\, IN MY SKIN is a powerful vision of feminist rage that will sink its teeth into you and never let go. \n\n\n\nRestoration by Severin Films. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Esther Williams in MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID (1952) w/ Aquatic Dancing Pre-Show @ 5 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Truly one of the most beautiful films of the 1950s…a gorgeous Technicolor spectacle complete with multi-colored smoke\, leaping water curtains\, and a co-ed group of synchronized swimmers that brought a new dimension to Busby Berkeley’s highly precise style.” – From the Front Row \n\n\n\nJames Sullivan works the carny circuit\, promoting the likes of a boxing kangaroo or grappling bear. Then the wheeler-dealer meets a million-dollar idea: beautiful swimming champ Annette Kellerman. She’ll churn through a River Thames PR stunt. Cause a bathing-suit scandal among Boston bluebloods. Headline New York’s Hippodrome. And become a Hollywood swimsation as cameras roll and Rin Tin Tin looks on. Glamorous\, amphibious Esther Williams portrays the real-life aquatic star in a splashy biopic costarring Victor Mature and loaded with stunning spectacle (including a must-see Busby Berkeley masterwork). Is this lovely Esther’s signature film? Well\, she called her 1999 autobiography The Million Dollar Mermaid for a reason. \n\n\n\nCome out before the film for a compilation of eye-popping aquatic dancing starting at 5 pm\, including more stunning clips of Esther Williams\, hilarious parodies\, and synchronized swimming marvels. SUMMARY:SPRING BREAKERS (2012)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“In Spring Breakers\, Harmony Korine bores into a contested\, deeply American topic — the pursuit of happiness taken to nihilistic extremes — but turns his exploration into such a gonzo\, outrageously funny party that it takes a while to appreciate that this is more of a horror film than a comedy.” – Manohla Dargis\, The New York Times \n\n\n\nLuridly beautiful and ecstatically ugly\, Harmony Korine’s SPRING BREAKERS is a depth charge of raw\, neon-lit ferocity\, a bikini-clad descent into debauchery and violence whose dizzyingly shallow surfaces belie its uneasy depths. Weaponizing a cast of post-Disney Channel teen idols (Selena Gomez\, Vanessa Hudgens\, Ashley Benson\, and Rachel Korine) as well as one decadently slumming star (James Franco\, channeling Florida hip hop star Riff Raff)\, SPRING BREAKERS is a pop-art hand grenade whose blast radius we all still inhabit. The film follows a quartet of perpetually swimsuitted college students who take a licentious (and ill-fated) spring break trip to St. Petersburg\, Florida\, where they land in jail before getting sprung by unhinged rapper-cum-gangster Alien who takes them under his debaucherous criminal wing. An early hit for the now-juggernaut studio A24\, SPRING BREAKERS remains a controversial cult classic worthy of (re-)consideration. Spring Break foreverrrrr. SUMMARY:RUSHMORE (1998) w/ Music of Wes Anderson pre-show @ 4:30 pm -- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. WAITLIST OPENS 30 MINUTES BEFORE SHOWTIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Arguably [Wes Anderson’s] most perfectly imagined film… sings with life and wit and strangeness” – Time Out \n\n\n\nThe dazzling sophomore film from Wes Anderson is equal parts coming-of-age story\, French New Wave homage\, and screwball comedy. Tenth grader Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) is Rushmore Academy’s most extracurricular student—and its least scholarly. He faces expulsion and enters into unlikely friendships with both a lovely first-grade teacher (Olivia Williams) and a melancholy self-made millionaire (Bill Murray\, in an award-winning performance). Set to a soundtrack of classic British Invasion tunes\, Rushmore defies categorization\, capturing the pain and exuberance of adolescence with wit\, emotional depth\, and cinematic panache. \n\n\n\nCome out before the film at 4:30 pm for a pre-show spotlighting the incredible music featured in the cinema of Wes Anderson\, including film clips and music videos. SUMMARY:THE SWIMMER (1968) -- "A boozy suburban nightmare" w/ Mad Men pre-show @ 4:15 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A BOOZY\, SUBURBAN NIGHTMARE…haunts viewers with memories that linger for years.” – Sean Burns\, Crooked Marquee \n\n\n\nBefore there was Mad Men\, there was THE SWIMMER. One of the quintessential American films of the 1960s\, THE SWIMMER is a sun-scorched and surreal suburban satire that boasts a hypnotic performance from the almighty Burt Lancaster as Ned Merrill\, the all-American man who one day decides to swim home to his Connecticut mansion via a series of pools in his neighborhood. Promoted with the tagline “When you talk about The Swimmer\, will you talk about yourself?” the film is at once a trip through the dark underbelly of suburban Americana\, a searing indictment of toxic masculinity\, and a journey deep into the self that anticipates the psychological self-exploration of the New Age era. Written and directed by husband-and-wife team Frank and Eleanor Perry (with some re-shoots by Sydney Pollack)\, this adaptation of John Cheever’s short story contains stunning expressionistic flourishes\, creating a true masterpiece of cinema — the perfect watch for a summer Sunday that will make you long for winter’s cold embrace. \n\n\n\nBefore the film\, we’ll be screening the Mad Men episode “The Summer Man\,” which takes direct inspiration from The Swimmer. The pre-show will begin at 4:15 pm. SUMMARY:$3 MYSTERY MOVIE (Keith's Birthday Edition): A Bizarre Family-Friendly Black Comedy
\n\n\n\nIt’s Keith’s 39th birthday\, and he’s feeling a little self-indulgent\, so this month’s selection is a blast from his own personal past: his very favorite film when he was 9 years old. An ostensibly family-friendly comedy\, this film is so perversely mean-spirited it could only have come from those halcyon days of questionable children’s entertainment: the nineties! With dashes of horror\, fantasy\, action\, and surprisingly harrowing family drama plus a heaping dose of Zucker-Abrahams-and-Zucker-style parody\, this is truly a film for no one. But\, through constant premium-cable daytime rotation it found a fan in one troubled young boy. Perhaps that’s not so surprising because while its commercial prospects may have been dubious\, this is a film that truly commits to a genuinely dark\, sardonic satire of American pop culture. Maybe\, just maybe\, it will grow a new following among those daring souls willing to plunk down a few bucks for the privilege of being subjected to its cynical—yet kid-appropriate!—vision.
