SUMMARY:Trippy\, metaphysical sci-fi dream AUGUST IN THE WATER (1995) w/ Japanese sci-fi animation pre-show @ 4:30 pm -- $5
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Trippy\, metaphysical\, an otherworldly gem…a hallucinatory analysis of coming-of-age malaise” – DAZED \n\n\n\nAn indescribable mix of teen melodrama\, New Age metaphysics\, dreamy sci-fi\, and creeping J-horror\, Gakuryū Ishii’s AUGUST IN THE WATER is truly a film unlike any other. Moving from the microscale insularity of teen romance and friendship to the eternal enigmas of the cosmos\, AUGUST IN THE WATER juxtaposes mysterious phenomena—outbursts of supernovae\, celestial misalignments and twin meteorites with ancient glyphs—with the arrival of transfer student Izumi (Rena Komine). A high dive prodigy\, the mysterious girl becomes entangled with the pensive Mao (Shinsuke Aoki)\, but a diving accident leaves her changed. Beset by strange events—drought\, a blistering heat wave and a disease that turns people to stone—Mao joins the convalescing Izumi\, now awakened to a heightened consciousness\, to search for the source of this cosmic disequilibrium. An evocative daydream infused with the enigma of existence\, Ishii’s mid-1990s masterwork is a primordial rite of passage\, awash in cloudburst and myth. \n\n\n\nCome out before the film for a pre-show of Japanese animated sci-fi shorts at 4:30 pm. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s POOL PARTY series\, featuring movies that allow you to beat the summer heat (vicariously) by taking a dip in the cool waters of a swimming pool\, even as mystery\, murder and heartbreak lurk on the horizon… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS EVER MADE! Striking\, kinetic\, sexy\, absurd… revels in its casual anarchy.” – Empire \n\n\n\nProduced by the legendary Dino De Laurentiis (Barbarella) and directed by the Godfather of Cult Cinema\, Mario Bava (Blood and Black Lace)\, DANGER: DIABOLIK is a swingin’ psychedelic Pop Art masterpiece\, filled with intrigue\, romance\, wild humor\, and the suavest. SUMMARY:Feminist body horror IN MY SKIN (2002) -- Art House Theater Day screening!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin is proud to present this screening as part of Art House Theater Day! AHTD is an annual program of AHC that brings audiences together to celebrate all that art house theaters – and independent film – contribute to our cultural landscape: ambitious and innovative art that provokes\, challenges\, entertains\, and inspires. \n\n\n\n“An uncommonly assured and provocative debut\, as gorgeous as it is gruesome.” – Time Out New York \n\n\n\nFeminism and French New Extremity have always been a powerfully potent combination in the hands of female directors like Catherine Breillat and Claire Denis\, and auteur Marina de Van joined their righteously twisted ranks with her gorgeous and grotesque 2002 horror breakthrough IN MY SKIN. Esther has been recovering from a recent leg injury when she develops an increasingly disturbing relationship with her body\, one where the lines between painful pleasure and self-mutilation become irrevocably blurred. Body horror filtered through serrated expectations of body image\, IN MY SKIN is a powerful vision of feminist rage that will sink its teeth into you and never let go. \n\n\n\nRestoration by Severin Films. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Esther Williams in MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID (1952) w/ Aquatic Dancing Pre-Show @ 5 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Truly one of the most beautiful films of the 1950s…a gorgeous Technicolor spectacle complete with multi-colored smoke\, leaping water curtains\, and a co-ed group of synchronized swimmers that brought a new dimension to Busby Berkeley’s highly precise style.” – From the Front Row \n\n\n\nJames Sullivan works the carny circuit\, promoting the likes of a boxing kangaroo or grappling bear. Then the wheeler-dealer meets a million-dollar idea: beautiful swimming champ Annette Kellerman. She’ll churn through a River Thames PR stunt. Cause a bathing-suit scandal among Boston bluebloods. Headline New York’s Hippodrome. And become a Hollywood swimsation as cameras roll and Rin Tin Tin looks on. Glamorous\, amphibious Esther Williams portrays the real-life aquatic star in a splashy biopic costarring Victor Mature and loaded with stunning spectacle (including a must-see Busby Berkeley masterwork). Is this lovely Esther’s signature film? Well\, she called her 1999 autobiography The Million Dollar Mermaid for a reason. \n\n\n\nCome out before the film for a compilation of eye-popping aquatic dancing starting at 5 pm\, including more stunning clips of Esther Williams\, hilarious parodies\, and synchronized swimming marvels. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s POOL PARTY series\, featuring movies that allow you to beat the summer heat (vicariously) by taking a dip in the cool waters of a swimming pool\, even as mystery\, murder and heartbreak lurk on the horizon… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:SPRING BREAKERS (2012)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“In Spring Breakers\, Harmony Korine bores into a contested\, deeply American topic — the pursuit of happiness taken to nihilistic extremes — but turns his exploration into such a gonzo\, outrageously funny party that it takes a while to appreciate that this is more of a horror film than a comedy.” – Manohla Dargis\, The New York Times \n\n\n\nLuridly beautiful and ecstatically ugly\, Harmony Korine’s SPRING BREAKERS is a depth charge of raw\, neon-lit ferocity\, a bikini-clad descent into debauchery and violence whose dizzyingly shallow surfaces belie its uneasy depths. Weaponizing a cast of post-Disney Channel teen idols (Selena Gomez\, Vanessa Hudgens\, Ashley Benson\, and Rachel Korine) as well as one decadently slumming star (James Franco\, channeling Florida hip hop star Riff Raff)\, SPRING BREAKERS is a pop-art hand grenade whose blast radius we all still inhabit. The film follows a quartet of perpetually swimsuitted college students who take a licentious (and ill-fated) spring break trip to St. Petersburg\, Florida\, where they land in jail before getting sprung by unhinged rapper-cum-gangster Alien who takes them under his debaucherous criminal wing. An early hit for the now-juggernaut studio A24\, SPRING BREAKERS remains a controversial cult classic worthy of (re-)consideration. Spring Break foreverrrrr. SUMMARY:RUSHMORE (1998) w/ Music of Wes Anderson pre-show @ 4:30 pm -- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. WAITLIST OPENS 30 MINUTES BEFORE SHOWTIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Arguably [Wes Anderson’s] most perfectly imagined film… sings with life and wit and strangeness” – Time Out \n\n\n\nThe dazzling sophomore film from Wes Anderson is equal parts coming-of-age story\, French New Wave homage\, and screwball comedy. Tenth grader Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) is Rushmore Academy’s most extracurricular student—and its least scholarly. He faces expulsion and enters into unlikely friendships with both a lovely first-grade teacher (Olivia Williams) and a melancholy self-made millionaire (Bill Murray\, in an award-winning performance). Set to a soundtrack of classic British Invasion tunes\, Rushmore defies categorization\, capturing the pain and exuberance of adolescence with wit\, emotional depth\, and cinematic panache. \n\n\n\nCome out before the film at 4:30 pm for a pre-show spotlighting the incredible music featured in the cinema of Wes Anderson\, including film clips and music videos. SUMMARY:THE SWIMMER (1968) -- "A boozy suburban nightmare" w/ Mad Men pre-show @ 4:15 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A BOOZY\, SUBURBAN NIGHTMARE…haunts viewers with memories that linger for years.” – Sean Burns\, Crooked Marquee \n\n\n\nBefore there was Mad Men\, there was THE SWIMMER. One of the quintessential American films of the 1960s\, THE SWIMMER is a sun-scorched and surreal suburban satire that boasts a hypnotic performance from the almighty Burt Lancaster as Ned Merrill\, the all-American man who one day decides to swim home to his Connecticut mansion via a series of pools in his neighborhood. Promoted with the tagline “When you talk about The Swimmer\, will you talk about yourself?” the film is at once a trip through the dark underbelly of suburban Americana\, a searing indictment of toxic masculinity\, and a journey deep into the self that anticipates the psychological self-exploration of the New Age era. Written and directed by husband-and-wife team Frank and Eleanor Perry (with some re-shoots by Sydney Pollack)\, this adaptation of John Cheever’s short story contains stunning expressionistic flourishes\, creating a true masterpiece of cinema — the perfect watch for a summer Sunday that will make you long for winter’s cold embrace. \n\n\n\nBefore the film\, we’ll be screening the Mad Men episode “The Summer Man\,” which takes direct inspiration from The Swimmer. The pre-show will begin at 4:15 pm. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. Information about content can also be found on Common Sense Media\, IMDB and DoesTheDogDie.com\, as well as through general internet searches. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. We follow the MPAA rating guidelines for all other films.\n\n\n\nTickets can be purchased using the BUY TICKETS link above. Upon ordering\, you will receive a confirmation email from Square. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the show at the concession counter.\n\n\n\nIf you’ve purchased advance tickets\, when you arrive\, please give your name at the concession counter to check in. \n\n\n\nTickets are returnable by sending a request through the contact form located on our About Us page prior to showtime.\n\n\n\nWhen an event is sold out\, we reserve the right to release open seats to customers on the waitlist. SUMMARY:$3 MYSTERY MOVIE (Keith's Birthday Edition): A Bizarre Family-Friendly Black Comedy
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the last Monday of every month\, Arkadin chooses an underseen deep cut to inflict upon an unwitting audience. Though the genre and tone may change\, the price always remains the same: three measly bucks. You can’t afford not to get yourself a ticket! \n\n\n\nIt’s Keith’s 39th birthday\, and he’s feeling a little self-indulgent\, so this month’s selection is a blast from his own personal past: his very favorite film when he was 9 years old. An ostensibly family-friendly comedy\, this film is so perversely mean-spirited it could only have come from those halcyon days of questionable children’s entertainment: the nineties! With dashes of horror\, fantasy\, action\, and surprisingly harrowing family drama plus a heaping dose of Zucker-Abrahams-and-Zucker-style parody\, this is truly a film for no one. But\, through constant premium-cable daytime rotation it found a fan in one troubled young boy. Perhaps that’s not so surprising because while its commercial prospects may have been dubious\, this is a film that truly commits to a genuinely dark\, sardonic satire of American pop culture. Maybe\, just maybe\, it will grow a new following among those daring souls willing to plunk down a few bucks for the privilege of being subjected to its cynical—yet kid-appropriate!—vision. SUMMARY:FATAL ATTRACTION (1987) w/ Intro by Jessa Crispin\, author of "What Is Wrong With Men: Patriarchy\, the Crisis of Masculinity\, and How (Of Course) Michael Douglas Films Explain Everything"
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us as we welcome Jessa Crispin\, author\, podcaster\, and intrepid social critic who has written one of the most anticipated books of 2025\, WHAT IS WRONG WITH MEN: PATRIARCHY\, THE CRISIS OF MASCULINITY\, AND HOW (OF COURSE) MICHAEL DOUGLAS FILMS EXPLAIN EVERYTHING\, who will introduce perhaps the quintessential work in Michael Douglas’ oeuvre\, 1987’s controversial erotic thriller Fatal Attraction. \n\n\n\nStylish and sexy\, Fatal Attraction took audiences to terrifying new heights with its thrilling story of a casual encounter gone terribly awry. This box-office smash was nominated for six Academy Awards\, including Best Picture and Best Director (Adrian Lyne). Michael Douglas plays Dan Gallagher\, a New York attorney who has a tryst with seductive Alex Forrest (Glenn Close) while his wife (Anne Archer) is away. Dan later shrugs off the affair as a mistake and considers it over. But Alex won’t be ignored. Not now\, not tomorrow\, not ever…even if it means destroying Dan’s family to keep him. \n\n\n\nCrispin’s book is a hilarious\, ambitious work of trenchant cultural criticism that traces the origins of today’s crisis of masculinity through the films of Michael Douglas! At 7 pm\, Jenna will be giving a talk and signing books at our next door neighbor\, The Heavy Anchor. At 9 pm\, she’ll pop on over to Arkadin to introduce the deliriously entertaining though wildly problematic FATAL ATTRACTION! \n\n\n\n“The most surprising thing about Jessa’s prescient\, rigorous\, and sneakily hilarious What Is Wrong with Men\, is how quickly and easily (and\, for me\, shamefully) she shifted my ‘Michael Douglas explains the modern man? Really?’ skepticism to ‘Get out of my brain!’ and then to ‘Wait . . . am I Michael Douglas?'” —Damon Young\, author of What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:CHALLENGERS (2024)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“THE BEST FILM OF 2024…sweaty\, sublime\, riveting\, rollicking” – The AV Club \n\n\n\nFew films have so instantly captured the zeitgeist like Luca Guadagnino’s (Suspiria\, Call Me By Your Name) throbbing throuple epic Challengers. One part sports drama and two parts Jules and Jim\, Challengers stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan\, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game. Married to (and micro-manager of) Art\, a champion on a losing streak (Mike Faist)\, Tashi formulates a comeback plan for her husband that takes a surprising turn when he must face off against low-circuit has-been Patrick (Josh O’Connor)\, his former best friend and Tashi’s former lover. Simmering tensions\, raw rivalries\, and anguished emotions all come to a head in a vibrantly cinematic tennis match set to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ techno-vibes score. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s mini-series\, LOVE COMES IN 3\, spotlighting throuples\, threesomes\, love triangles\, and other romantically complicated trios. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:Bizarrely Irresistible Hungarian Animated Musical BUBBLE BATH (1980) -- ᴀ ᴅʀᴀᴡɴ ᴠɪsɪᴏɴs sᴄʀᴇᴇɴɪɴɢ
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Hungary’s third ever full-length animated feature is a true curio and a work of minor genius: a gallopingly neurotic modernist-psychedelic musical from 1979 that bubbles and pulsates with anxieties about modernity… The crazed energy is irresistible” – The Guardian \n\n\n\nBubble Bath is the bohemian animated love child of Bill Plympton and Ralph Bakshi\, touching on a wide range of styles from 1920s Art Deco to 1960s Psychedelia and 1970s louche Roxy Music-style decadence. This idiosyncratic musical from Hungarian director György Kovásznai is an indescribably strange\, personal and totally irresistible screwball sitcom. A walking ball of anxieties\, shop window decorator Zsolt is like a stoned hippie alleycat\, or an Eastern European Frank Zappa in a tux; medical student Anikó a more curvaceous post-modern Betty Boop — and both unsure of their attraction to each other\, of the choices they’ve made\, of what life has in store for them. \n\n\n\nEach month\, DRAWN VISIONS presents an outré gem from the wild\, wonderful world of animation. SUMMARY:Jean Harlow & Clark Gable in RED DUST (1932) presented by Forbidden Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForbidden Hollywood is a monthly series hosted by STL film critic Katie Carter celebrating the Pre-Code films of the early 1930s\, when movies were wild\, racy\, transgressive\, and tons of fun. \n\n\n\nAmong the steamiest of the love-in-the-tropics dramas that were a brief fad during Hollywood’s pre-Code era\, Victor Fleming’s Red Dust centers around a love triangle involving macho plantation manager Dennis Carson (Clark Gable)\, brassy prostitute Vantine (Jean Harlow)\, and prim Barbara (Mary Astor)\, an engineer’s wife joining her husband on a job in French Indochina whose arrival quickly explodes Dennis’ personal rule: no women. Red Dust’s frank embrace of extramarital relationships\, highlighted by Harlow’s topless rain barrel bath scene and made more pungent by the movie’s sweaty atmosphere\, caused little stir with the censors on its release\, serving as a sharp indicator of the level of mature content prevalent in films at the time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE CHASE (1994) w/ 1994 Punk Music Video Pre-show @ 6:30 presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nCharlie Sheen stars as a wrongly-convicted prison escapee named Jack Hammond who accidentally kidnaps wealthy heiress Natalie Voss (Kristy Swanson) while trying to flee the police in the underrated action comedy film The Chase (1994). As Jack tries to escape down a southern California highway to Mexico\, an elaborate car chase unfolds fueled by a manic tabloid reporter trying desperately to capture the story. Soon Jack is being pursued by cops being filmed for a documentary\, crazed paparazzi and bonehead vigilantes looking to be TV stars. \n\n\n\nThe Chase is nearly all car chase for its entire run time. It was a modest success during its original release in March 1994\, capitalizing on the popularity of the action and car chase genres during the decade. The soundtrack features high-adrenaline tracks from SoCal punk bands NOFX\, The Offspring\, Bad Religion and Rollins Band\, and is a great encapsulation of ’94 punk right as it was breaking into the mainstream. \n\n\n\nCoincidentally\, the film gained renewed attention later that year when O.J. Simpson was infamously chased down the Los Angeles freeway in his White Bronco by the L.A.P.D. all while being filmed by a news helicopter.  \n\n\n\nThe Chase would go on to garner a cult following for its satire on tabloid media and cop TV shows\, as well as for its cameos from alternative rock luminaries Henry Rollins as over-enthusiastic police officer Dobbs and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis and Flea as monster truck driving vigilantes Will and Dale.  \n\n\n\nA 1994 Punk Music Video Pre-Show will start at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. SUMMARY:TARGETS (1968) presented by Dark Dream Cinema -- SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. WAITLIST OPENS 30 MINS. BEFORE SHOWTIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“One of the most powerful films of 1968 and one of the greatest directorial debuts of all time.” – Quentin Tarantino \n\n\n\nWhen an aging classic horror star agrees to a public swan song at his final film premiere\, he unwittingly crosses paths with a damaged young man hellbent on revenge. By the time the smoke clears\, both of their lives will have been changed forever. Occupying a singular place in horror history\, Peter Bogdanovich’s Targets sketched out the genre’s future while paying respects to its past. Featuring Boris Karloff in his last American role\, this subversive classic served as the nexus point between the gothic horrors of yore and the prosaic horrors of now\, proving unexpectedly prescient by rooting itself in the everyday violence of the ‘60s. Criminally underseen to this day\, Targets has only sharpened its edge as time has proven its mettle. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:WILD THINGS (1998) -- “steamy\, tawdry\, gloriously over-the-top”
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Director John McNaughton’s grip is a bawdy mix of suspense\, sex and silliness\, all served up with a huge tongue sticking in his cheek. It’s a foamy mix\, topped off by highly charged performances.” – The Hollywood Reporter \n\n\n\nA steaming slice of sexy late-90s neo-noir from director John McNaughton (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer)\, Wild Things is the ideal balance of sleaze\, trash\, wit\, and softcore stimuli. Popular guidance counselor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) is no stranger to being the focus of female attention\, but his fortunes change dramatically when one of the wealthiest students at his high school\, sultry minx Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards) makes a bold accusation against him. The charge looks sure to stick when another girl from the other end of the social spectrum\, Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell)\, steps forward with her own allegations\, but Detective Duquette (Kevin Bacon) smells something fishy\, and the truth is as murky and dangerous as the alligator-infested swamps in the hinterlands of this affluent beach community. Wild Things piles one loony twist after another while luxuriating in the humid sleaze of South Florida\, where everyone’s a con artist and nothing is what it seems. Oh yeah…and did we mention that pool scene? \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s mini-series\, LOVE COMES IN 3\, spotlighting throuples\, threesomes\, love triangles\, and other romantically complicated trios. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:HOUSE (1977) -- Sold Out!
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. WAITLIST OPENS 30 MINS. BEFORE SHOWTIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Night WTF screenings are cheap\, weird\, and out of control! Cult trashterpieces\, so-bad-they’re-good crapfests\, movies that make you ask “What the hell am I watching?!” — we’ve got ’em all on Friday night. \n\n\n\n“Obligatory viewing for lovers of the kitsch\, the cool and the crazy\, but be warned — don’t watch it under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs\, or your head will explode.” – The Arts Desk \n\n\n\nHow to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 movie House (Hausu)? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits\, a demonic house cat\, a bloodthirsty piano\, and other ghoulish visions\, all realized by Obayashi via mattes\, animation\, and collage effects. Equally absurd and nightmarish\, House might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet. Never before available on home video in the United States\, it’s one of the most exciting cult discoveries in years. \n\n\n\nThis August\, Arkadin is excited to present TEENAGE DREAM: OBAYASHI IN THE ’80s\, a collection of restored films by Nobuhiko Obayashi\, the filmmaker behind legendary horror freakout\, House (also playing this month). SUMMARY:Daringly feminist silent film BED AND SOFA (1927) -- $3
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A wry and sardonic sex comedy…Every shot\, detail\, gesture\, glance\, reflection draws us deeper into these three likeable\, imperfect people and their interaction.” – BrentOnFilm \n\n\n\nOne of the most daring films ever produced in the Soviet Union\, Bed and Sofa (also known as Menage a Trois) was a major international success even though it was banned in Western Europe and parts of the United States\, as well as facing eventual suppression in its homeland as well. This disarmingly funny comedy of sexual politics tells the story of a bored housewife Liuda whose cramped one-room apartment gets even tighter when her husband invites his old army buddy Volodia to crash on the couch. Though at first resentful of this unwanted houseguest\, Liuda soon finds herself attracted to the dashing interloper. Soon\, man\, woman\, and lover find themselves living together in a Muscovite throuple. This unorthodox relationship that forms between the trio was allegedly inspired by Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky who lived with his “muse” Lilya Brik and her husband Osip Brik for some years — a fact which contributed to the film’s scandalous reputation. Renowned for its frank treatment of abortion\, polyamory\, and the role of women in society\, Bed and Sofa remains a masterpiece of naturalistic storytelling. SUMMARY:SCHOOL IN THE CROSSHAIRS (1981) -- Teenage Dream: Obayashi in the '80s
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis August\, Arkadin is excited to present TEENAGE DREAM: OBAYASHI IN THE ’80s\, a collection of restored films by Nobuhiko Obayashi\, the filmmaker behind legendary horror freakout\, House (also playing this month). These restorations are made possible by Cult Epics and the American Genre Film Archive. \n\n\n\n“[Obayashi] feels like he’s reinventing cinema with every movie he makes.” – Sean Gilman \n\n\n\nThis early “idol” movie by genre master Nobuhiko Obayashi mixes wacked-out sci-fi\, wild optical effects\, and coming-of-age drama into a one-of-a-kind experience only Obayashi could provide. School in the Crosshairs stars Hiroko Yakushimaru\, then the heart-throb of millions of Japanese fans\, as Yuko\, a high school girl with telekinetic powers who must defend her school from an extraterrestrial attack. Meanwhile\, a new student is using her own psychic abilities to transform the school into a fascistic staging area for an alien takeover of Earth. Offering powerful political commentary with plenty of sci-fi thrills\, SCHOOL IN THE CROSSHAIRS is a stylish crowd-pleaser from one of Japan’s most electric auteurs. \n\n\n\n“What if Scanners was a live action anime pitting two schoolgirls against each other under charged clouds of Japanese fascist tendencies” – Felipe Furtado \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the great haunting visions of the cinema…What Herzog sees in the story\, I think\, is what he finds in many of his films: Men haunted by a vision of great achievement\, who commit the sin of pride by daring to reach for it\, and are crushed by an implacable universe.” – Roger Ebert \n\n\n\nIn the mid-16th century\, after annihilating the Incan empire\, Pizarro leads his army of conquistadors over the Andes into the heart of the most savage environment on earth in search of the fabled city of gold\, El Dorado. SUMMARY:Saint Louis Video Society Presents XUXA TIL YOU PUKE w/ Princess Xuxa E Os Trapalhoes (1989)
DESCRIPTION:SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY digs deep in its extensive archives to present the weirdest\, wildest\, most incredible VHS obscurities. Always free\, always presented by Video Society archivist James Milam! \n\n\n\nOn Monday August 11th\, SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY PRESENTS the multi-talented\, mononymous\, megastar Xuxa\, in a block of programming affectionally titled XUXA TIL YOU PUKE! The internationally renowned Brazilian brought her unusual style of kiddie-music-mania to the US with a short-lived\, syndicated variety show in 1993. Outside of her TV (and singing) career\, she starred in an informal series of five wacky comedic films alongside the popular sketch troupe\, Os Trapalhões\, loosely translated as The Bumblers. Well STLVS is bringing a little bit of everything together in August with a few episodes of her eponymous kids show\, AND a rare screening of the sci-fi\, comedy mashup film A PRINCESA XUXA E OS TRAPALHOES (1989)! \n\n\n\nThe fun starts at 6:30pm on the dot\, continues with the feature at around 7pm\, and goes on until no one can handle another minute of the blonde\, Brazilian bombshell! Don’t miss it! SUMMARY:BUSTERPALOOZA feat. Our Hospitality + Buster Keaton shorts presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\nCelebrate the glory of silent cinema’s greatest clown\, as Silents\, Please! presents BUSTERPALOOZA! \n\n\n\nOften cited as one of his most significant films—as well as one of his funniest—1923’s Our Hospitality is his take on the notorious feud between the Hatfield and McCoy clans (here renamed the Canfields and the McKays). Keaton is luckless William McKay\, who must journey down South to view his lacklustre inheritance\, only to be seduced along the way by one of the Canfields\, Virginia\, who lures him to her family’s house so that the men of the clan can shoot him down. But William knows that the Canfield men won’t kill him as long as he’s in their house\, so he endeavors to stay put there\, against all obstacles. With its attention to 19th-century period detail and emphasis on integrating the gags into the storyline\, Our Hospitality was not just a breakthrough in Keaton’s career\, but it was also noted even during its release as an advancement in the medium\, with Variety proclaiming\, “It marks a step forward in the production of picture comedies.” \n\n\n\nPlus\, a selection of Buster Keaton’s finest and funniest shorts! SUMMARY:THE FAVOURITE (2019)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A scintillating black comedy of manners from Yorgos Lanthimos\, it latches its fangs in deep.” – Austin Chronicle \n\n\n\nThis bawdy\, acerbic tale of royal intrigue\, passion\, envy and betrayal in the court of Queen Anne may just be the finest (and funniest) work from Greek Weird Wave auteur Yorgos Lanthimos. In early 18th-century England\, a frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne\, while her friend and lover Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz)\, governs the country while tending to Anne’s ill health and volatile temper. When new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives\, Sarah takes Abigail under her wing as she cunningly schemes to return to her aristocratic roots\, setting off an outrageous rivalry to become the Queen’s favo(u)rite. Based on Queen Anne’s real-life lesbian relationships\, this twisted love-triangle tale “slices open three queer women and lets their messy humanity bleed all over you” (Guardian). SUMMARY:THE DOOM GENERATION (1995) -- 30th Anniversary!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Zany\, violent\, erotically charged… [a] fearless cinematic achievement.” – Indiewire \n\n\n\nGregg Araki takes a road trip to hell in this wild\, meth- and fast-food-fueled joyride through the margins of a menacing American wasteland. When they inadvertently link up with a dangerously alluring drifter (Johnathon Schaech)\, a chilled-out Cali bro (James Duval) and his spiky\, foulmouthed girlfriend (Rose McGowan) find themselves on an increasingly violent\, kinky\, and darkly comic journey in which erotic tensions rise along with the body count. Working with a significant budget for the first time\, Araki employs boldly stylized lighting and art direction to create a heightened sense of unreality in a shocking\, shoegaze-soundtracked chronicle of young lives careening toward oblivion. Billed with tongue in cheek as “A Heterosexual Movie by Gregg Araki\,” The Doom Generation is brimming with violent tendencies and homoerotic desires. DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Night WTF screenings are cheap\, weird\, and out of control! Cult trashterpieces\, so-bad-they’re-good crapfests\, movies that make you ask “What the hell am I watching?!” — we’ve got ’em all on Friday night. \n\n\n\n“Imagine James Bond directed by Russ Meyer. HARD TICKET continues Andy and Arlene Sidaris’ subversion of standard gender roles\, with women depicted as strong\, resourceful and brave.” – NOTCOMING.COM \n\n\n\nBullets! Bikinis!! Radioactive pythons exploding out of toilets!!! No film captures the playful chaos of action cinema’s golden age like director Andy and producer Arlene Sidaris’ undisputed masterpiece. An inexhaustible geyser of top-notch sex and violence\, Hard Ticket to Hawaii exists beyond entertainment’s maximum limits. The Agency is a tough-as-nails\, tech-savvy squad of physically ideal humans (led by Playboy icon Dona Speir and The Bold and the Beautiful soap legend Ronn Moss) who defend Hawaii’s Molokai Island from diamond smugglers\, narcotics slingers\, and a skateboarding maniac armed with an inflatable sex doll. Tirelessly and shirtlessly\, they deal out homicidal justice at every turn—unleashing helicopters\, motorcycles\, and deadly frisbees to ensure the safety of every bronzed boytoy and babe on the beach.
