SUMMARY:PHANTASM (1979)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Lurid\, illogical and utterly off-the-wall…a marvelous orgy of cheap thrills!” – Newsweek \n\n\n\nLike The Shining and Dawn of the Dead\, PHANTASM is an intoxicating nightmare we never want to end. Written\, produced\, directed\, shot\, and edited by Don Coscarelli when he was only 23-years-old\, the movie follows a group of small-town friends as they battle the “Tall Man”—a mysterious force of cosmic horror who wields flying silver murderballs. This Lovecraftian vortex deftly combines gothic horror\, surrealism\, and a killer prog rock score into a concoction that horror fans have never stopped worshipping. Highly unusual\, strangely unsettling\, and mysteriously satisfying\, PHANTASM is “one of the most beloved horror movies of its era\, precisely because it’s so different” (Los Angeles Times). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:TROLL 2 (1990) -- the best worst movie ever!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Night WTF screenings are cheap\, weird\, and out of control! Cult trashterpieces\, so-bad-they’re-good crapfests\, movies that make you ask “What the hell am I watching?!” — we’ve got ’em all on Friday night. \n\n\n\nOH MY GOOOOOOOOOOD! IT’S TROLL 2! Widely proclaimed as the Best Worst Movie Ever Made — there’s even a documentary to that effect! — TROLL 2 is a disasterpiece of epic proportions. From the atrocious acting to the booger-like monsters (which\, confusingly\, are goblins\, not trolls) to the bizarrely stilted dialogue to the fact that it has absolutely no connection to the original Troll\, Claudio Fragasso’s gift to humanity transports us to the strange town of Nilbog where a vacationing family encounters a horde of monsters who transform humans into delicious food! Universally panned upon its release\, the film has earned a well-deserved cult among trash cinema aficionados. Whether you’ve seen it a million times or you’re Nilbog noob\, TROLL 2 is a spooky season must-see. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:TWO BY SU: Rules of the Road (1993) + Gut Renovation (2012) w/ virtual Q&A with Su Friedrich
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the foremost contemporary filmmakers of the avant-garde\, Su Friedrich is a pioneer of Queer Cinema and a ferocious provocateur. Arkadin is proud to present two of her films as well as a virtual Q&A with this utterly essential artist. \n\n\n\nRULES OF THE ROAD (1993)Rules of the Road tells the story of a love affair and its demise through one of the objects shared by the couple: an old beige station wagon with fake wood paneling. A typical American family car for an atypical American family\, it provides the women at first with all the familiar comforts. But when their relationship ends\, the car becomes the property of one and the bane of the other’s existence. Even long after their separation\, this tangible reminder of their life together—and thousands of its imitators—continues to prowl the streets of the city\, haunting the woman who no longer holds the keys either to the car or the other woman’s heart. Through spoken text\, popular music\, and images from the streets of New York\, Rules of the Road takes a somewhat whimsical\, somewhat caustic look at how our dreams of freedom\, pleasure\, security\, and family are so often symbolized by the automobile. 31 min. \n\n\n\n“… the light\, almost whimsical tone of the film should not blind us to the part of it that is irreducibly personal. Station wagons are everywhere; everybody’s got a sad love story. But only one filmmaker\, to my knowledge\, has Su Friedrich’s eye…With Rules of the Road\, she creates a film like a perfect short story.”—Stuart Klawans\, The Nation \n\n\n\nGUT RENOVATION (2012)A documentary of small changes evolves into an historical record of New York. The resulting film is an essayistic requiem for a neighborhood and an entire way of life; it also provides a case study of the rapid gentrification of our cities. In 1989\, together with a group of female friends\, Friedrich rented and renovated an old loft in Williamsburg\, an unassuming working-class district of Brooklyn. In 2005 this former industrial zone was designated a residential area and the factories\, manufacturers and artists’ lofts were priced out by property speculators lured by tax breaks. Friedrich spent five years documenting the changes in the area between East River and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. She shows the demolition of industrial buildings and the construction of trendy new apartments for wealthy clients\, watching old tenants leave and new inhabitants arrive. As she keeps meticulous record of developments\, the extent and speed of the upheaval becomes clear. When her lease isn’t renewed\, her documentary images and trenchant commentary become the tools of her growing anger. 81 min. \n\n\n\n“…the most salient and personal film about Brooklyn’s ever-changing face since Hal Ashby’s The Landlord… Gut Renovation is bound to polarize audiences. It’s a polemical howl in the night\, a desperately angry and sidesplittingly funny look at one oh-so-mythologized neighborhood’s transformation…[It’s] a film essay that is of a piece with the work of heady French names like Godard and Varda.”—Brandon Harris\, Filmmaker Magazine“Friedrich uses all manner of wry digs and ironic whimsy to make her point…the ‘damn-the-torpedoes’ directness of her spoken and superimposed commentary gives the film its unique bite and personality.”—Ronnie Scheib\, Variety“…Ms. Friedrich is fighting mad. She is a provocateur.”—Stephen Holden\, The New York Times \n\n\n\nABOUT THE FILMMAKERSu Friedrich has directed twenty-seven films and videos since 1978\, which have been featured in thirty-one retrospectives at major museums and film festivals including at the Museum of Modern Art\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Rotterdam Film Festival\, the Buenos Aires Festival of Independent Cinema and the National Film Theater in London\, and have been widely screened and extensively written about. The films have also won numerous awards\, including Grand Prix at the Melbourne Film Festival\, Outstanding Documentary Award at Outfest and Best Narrative Film Award at the Athens International Film Festival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:Ken Russell's THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM (1988) w/ Creepy Crawlies pre-show
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Shamelessly bonkers! A Halloween camp classic [that] expertly toes the line between the absurd and the ridiculous.” – Ty Burr \n\n\n\nUnfairly dismissed as an aging auteur’s bid at serious horror\, THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM is Ken Russell’s typically extravagant exercise in camp absurdism. Drenched in phallic imagery\, folkloric terror\, and a masculine battle of wills between\, of all people\, Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi\, Russell’s sublimely silly tale of a gigantic white serpent monster who feeds on the flesh of virgins. Posh nobleman James D’Ampton (Grant) dismisses these tales until archaeology student Angus Flint (Capaldi) unearths a massive reptilian skull. Could lubricious local temptress Lady Sylvia Marsh (Amanda Donohoe) be involved? Can you say\, “duh”? \n\n\n\nCome out early for 30 minutes of slimy slithery terror with our Creepy Crawlies Pre-Show featuring the ickiest worms\, snakes\, slugs\, and bugs in cinematic history. Starts at 6:30 pm! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:SATANIC PANIC! MIXTAPE: An original mash-up featuring the most insane selections from the golden age of Satanic Panic
DESCRIPTION:We’ve crafted a mixtape that delves deep into the weird\, nauseating\, fascinating world of the ’80s/’90s Satanic Panic wave. It’s 90 minutes of pure hysteria for your viewing pleasure! \n\n\n\nWalt Disney. Metallica. Kids hanging out in public parks. What do these all have in common? They are the work of SATAN. The devil takes many forms\, from the obvious (Michael Aquino\, with his devil’s-horns eyebrows and Dracula-black garb) to the subtle (He-Man? Really?). Learn the tell-tale signs of Beelzebub and his malicious minions with Arkadin’s very own mixtape\, featuring selections from: \n\n\n\nDevil Worship: Exposing Satan’s Underground — Geraldo Rivera’s batshit 1988 primetime special that posits a vast Satanic network operating in America. \n\n\n\nLaw Enforcement Guide to Satanic Cults — This unintentionally hilarious police training video is hosted by an impressively mulleted ex-Satanist who observes extremely dubious advice on the Devil’s minions for police officers \n\n\n\nDeception of a Generation — Thousands of Gen Xers whose parents refused to buy them that He-Man action figure have this absurd tape to blame. A delusional exegesis on the Satanic intentions behind everything from Dungeons & Dragons to Star Wars. \n\n\n\nDevil Worship: The Rise of Satanism — A shocking exposé of the Satanic infiltration of our youth with a particular focus on heavy metal. Watch out for that Megadeth album\, kid! \n\n\n\nAnd much much more! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933) -- the Universal Horror classic + surprise short!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“What a treat. So delightfully nasty and sardonic\, and with a really high body count to boot. Invisibility is the most fascinating power because it really does is divorce you from any moral accountability\, which of course leads to a psychosis that manifests itself in all sorts of ghoulish ways.” – Scott Tobias \n\n\n\nOf all the OG Universal monster-movie classics\, 1933’s THE INVISIBLE MAN is undoubtedly the most under-appreciated. From director James Whale\, the man behind Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein\, this haunting adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel elegantly mixes science fiction ideas and a thriller plot with touches of Whale’s signature sardonic camp humor. With its macabre atmosphere\, still-stunning practical effects\, and searing lead performance by Claude Rains (best known as Captain Renault from Casablanca)\, THE INVISIBLE MAN is the deliciously and maliciously gripping tale of scientist Jack Griffin (Rains)\, who discovers a means of rendering himself completely invisible only to find that it comes with a disastrous side effect: aggressive\, murderous rage. A real treat for fans of old-school thrills\, this one is guaranteed to shock\, terrify\, and delight in equal measure. \n\n\n\nPlus\, before the film\, we’ll be presenting a surprise spooky short! \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of ARKADIN’S MONSTER MASH MOVIE MARATHON. DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Zany\, hilarious\, and bizarre…best described as The Thing if it were directed by John Waters” – Certified Forgotten \n\n\n\nBoasting one of the goopiest and goofiest monsters of the ’80s\, TERRORVISION is a wild throwback to the Golden Age of monster movies in the 1950s\, updated for the MTV Generation. A satirical horror-comedy about a satellite dish that unleashes a bizarre blobular monster who feasts on humans\, this Full Moon Feature has a reputation as a so-bad-it’s-good cult oddity\, but what if it’s actually just genuinely really good? A wildly entertaining\, 80-minute brain-melter full of silly gags\, campy performances by legends like Gerrit Graham and Mary Woronov\, and some absolutely eye-popping practical effects. SUMMARY:THE MUMMY THEME PARK (2000) -- a late-night disasterpiece of epic proportions
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n★★★★★ – “I tell you this is one of the greatest Disaterpieces I have ever seen! I don’t really know what the hell happened during it and I’m not sure anyone really does\, but wow is it amazing!” – Tony the Terror\, Letterboxd \n\n\n\nAlvero Passeri remains one of the great undiscovered masters of so-bad-it’s-brilliant filmmaking. An Italian Ed Wood with a penchant for nonsensical yet creative plots\, surrealistic touches\, and absolutely bugfuck effects\, Passeri is perhaps “best” known for his killer-fish WTF-er Creatures from the Abyss\, but THE MUMMY THEME PARK might just be his masterwork. An unrepentantly bizarre would-be shocker about an amusement park built on top of a mass Egyptian tomb whose animatronic mummies start coming to life\, this film features goopy gore\, insane practical effects\, and some genuinely impressive miniatures\, as well as some of the most inane dialogue and off-the-wall theme park ideas you’ve ever heard. It’s Jurassic Park meets The Mummy (1999) with a Troll 2 execution\, and… It. Is. GLORIOUS. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of ARKADIN’S MONSTER MASH MOVIE MARATHON. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Guillermo del Toro's PAN'S LABYRINTH (2006) w/ Fantasy Horror pre-show -- 𝕠𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕝𝕕𝕤
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. WAITLIST OPENS 30 MINS BEFORE SHOWTIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the greatest of all fantasy films…there is so much impact and intensity\, and such a richness of visual imagination.” – Roger Ebert \n\n\n\nAn Academy Award–winning dark fable set five years after the end of the Spanish Civil War\, Pan’s Labyrinth encapsulates the rich visual style and genre-defying craft of Guillermo del Toro. Eleven-year-old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero\, in a mature and tender performance) comes face to face with the horrors of fascism when she and her pregnant mother are uprooted to the countryside\, where her new stepfather (Sergi López)\, a sadistic captain in General Francisco Franco’s army\, hunts down Republican guerrillas refusing to give up the fight. The violent reality in which Ofelia lives merges seamlessly with her fantastical interior world when she meets a faun in a decaying labyrinth and is set on a strange\, mythic journey that is at once terrifying and beautiful. In his revisiting of this bloody period in Spanish history\, del Toro creates a vivid depiction of the monstrosities of war infiltrating a child’s imagination and threatening the innocence of youth. \n\n\n\nPlus\, come out early for a sampling of mystical terror with a Fantasy Horror pre-show starting at 4:30 pm! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Disney's ROBIN HOOD (1973) w/ Disney cartoons pre-show @ 1:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A jaunty\, beautifully animated series of very funny set pieces that remain effective” – IndieWire \n\n\n\nIf any Walt Disney animated classic can be considered a true cult favorite\, it’s this delightfully eccentric take on the Merrie Olde English legend of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Anthropomorphizing its title hero as an almost too-dashing fox\, ROBIN HOOD is a feast of adorable mammalian character designs and a folksy sense of humor that dragged the timeless tale straight into the 1970s. With a charming handmade scruffiness that marks it out from the House of Mouse’s typically slick style\, ROBIN HOOD was dismissed by critics but beloved by audiences\, later becoming the very first entry in the “Walt Disney Classics” line of VHS releases. The film maintains a legion of fans\, including Wes Anderson (who repurposed the film’s Oscar-nominated ballad “Love” for his own vulpine animated tale\, The Fantastic Mr. Fox)\, Byron Howard (whose film Zootopia drew direct inspiration from ROBIN HOOD)\, and a legion of furries who simply can’t get enough of Robin and Maid Marian. (We can’t exactly blame them!) \n\n\n\nCome out before the film for a selection of Disney animated shorts\, starting at 1:30 pm! \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s month-long series KNIGHTY KNIGHT\, featuring knights in shining armor and other medieval tales! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. We follow the MPAA rating guidelines for all other films.\n\n\n\nTickets can be purchased using the BUY TICKETS link above. Upon ordering\, you will receive a confirmation email from Square. SUMMARY:Mel Brooks' ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS (1993) w/ Mel Brooks on TV pre-show @ 3:45 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Wild\, anarchic\, scatological delight!” – Variety \n\n\n\nNo one achieves stupid humor with quite the brilliance of Mel Brooks\, and they don’t come much stupider or more brilliant than ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS. Starring Cary Elwes as perhaps the most credible Robin of Locksley to hit the big screen since Errol Flynn\, Brooks’ free-wheeling satire is at once a loving tribute to the timeless tale and an all-out assault on good taste and propriety. Drawing heavily from Flynn’s 1938 classic as well as Kevin Costner’s bloated Prince of Thieves while\, Brooks\, in typical fashion\, takes potshots at an eclectic selection of pop-cultural targets. Everything from Gone with the Wind to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gets felled by the film’s satirical blade. Brooks also diversifies this whitey-white tale\, creating surely the very first telling of the Robin Hood legend to include jokes about circumcision and hip hop. Featuring a stacked cast that includes a pre-fame Dave Chappelle\, a height-of-his-powers Richard Lewis\, an arguably-past-their-prime-but-still-hilarious Dick Van Patten and Dom DeLuise\, startling appearances by Patrick Stewart and Isaac Hayes\, and Amy Yasbeck as the most sex-mad Maid Marian you’ve ever seen\, MEN IN TIGHTS is such dumb fun it could only have been created by a comedy genius. \n\n\n\nDID YOU KNOW? Men in Tights wasn’t Brooks’ first foray into Sherwood Forest. In the 1970s\, he created a short-lived Robin Hood sitcom called When We Were Rotten. Before the film\, we’ll be playing an episode of this little-seen chapter in Mel’s storied comedy career\, starting at 3:45 pm. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s month-long series KNIGHTY KNIGHT\, featuring knights in shining armor and other medieval tales! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Orson Welles' anti-fascist noir THE STRANGER (1946) w/ anti-Nazi cartoons pre-show @ 2:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Welles’s feverish\, politically uneasy noir remains an outstanding achievement…. Released a little over a year after the cessation of fighting between the Allied Forces and Germany\, The Stranger offers haunting insight into the fascist mind and never shies away from the reality that the National Socialist party was fascism’s most successful and devastating incarnate but certainly not its last.” – Slant Magazine \n\n\n\nOrson Welles’ only true-blue box office success as a director has\, paradoxically\, remained one of the most under-seen and under-discussed entries in his oeuvre. But as the tides of Trumpian fascism wash over America\, there’s no better time to (re)discover this searing thriller\, a gripping noir thriller that doubles as an indictment of Nazi criminality and American complicity. Edward G. Robinson\, an anti-fascist in his own life\, plays a UN war crimes investigator tracking high-ranking Nazi fugitive Franz Kindler (Orson Welles)\, who’s taken refuge at a small Connecticut prep school. Anticipating the stories of Nazi officials recruited to the US under Operation Paperclip\, THE STRANGER is perhaps Welles’ most nakedly political work\, eschewing the stylistic swagger of his best-known masterpieces in favor of a blunt paranoia that reflects the post-War cynicism among many Americans that while the Allies may have won the War\, the hideous allure of fascism had not been fully defeated. \n\n\n\nCome out early for a pre-show of anti-Nazi cartoons starting at 2:30 pm! \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s NOIRVEMBER series\, $3 Sunday matinees of film noir classics that spotlight the broken dreams and bitter paranoia of this distinctly American genre. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:SMARTY (1934) presented by Forbidden Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForbidden Hollywood is a monthly series hosted by STL film critic Katie Carter celebrating the Pre-Code films of the early 1930s\, when movies were wild\, racy\, transgressive\, and tons of fun. \n\n\n\nMarketed with the taglines “A picture with a wallop!” and “She changed her husbands like she changed her hats\,” Warner Brothers’ 1934 comedy SMARTY may be more accurately described by its UK title\, Hit Me Again. Vivacious Joan Blondell stars as Vickie\, who sets the action of the film in motion when she goads her husband Tony (Warren William) into slapping her at a party. A messy whirl of divorce\, remarriage\, and extra-marital affairs among their social circle follows. Its abrasive treatment of its subject has generated controversy in the decades since its release\, but while SMARTY is frequently derided for supposedly endorsing spousal abuse\, it’s actually an incisive dive into the life of a woman who enjoys rough sex and knows how to get it\, populated by female characters who always maintain their agency. Featuring one of the most pre-Code casts imaginable— character actors Edward Everett Horton and Frank McHugh as well as Claire Dodd join William and Blondell—SMARTY is the sort of gleefully sordid\, uniquely pre-Code film that couldn’t even be made today. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995) -- 30th Anniversary Screening presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nGhost in the Shell (1995) is set in a fictional 2029 in which cybernetic technology allows for the human body to be fully replaced with mechanical body parts and lets the brain connect directly to the internet. Major Motoko Kusanagi is the cyborg leader of Public Security Section 9 in Japan. The Major and her team are investigating a highly advanced artificial intelligence known as the Puppet Master that can “ghost hack” cyberized bodies. As the Major gets closer to catching the puppet master\, she struggles with a philosophical debate about the very nature of consciousness and the soul. \n\n\n\nAdapted from the manga by Masamune Shirow\, Ghost in the Shell was a Japanese British international co-production from  Kodansha\, Bandai Visual and Manga Entertainment\, all who were looking to create an anime film as critically acclaimed and successful as the groundbreaking Akira. The film originally failed to recoup its budget during its theatrical release\, but soon gained a massive cult following when it was released on VHS\, becoming the first Japanese film ever to top the Billboard video sales chart in 1996. Now Ghost in the Shell is widely regarded as a masterpiece\, with praise for director Mamoru Oshii for his “thermo-optical camouflage” animation and a memorable score by Kenji Kawai. The film launched a franchise that includes multiple sequels\, television series and a live-action Hollywood remake\, as well as having a massive influence on the Wachowskis when they created The Matrix. \n\n\n\nWith AI technology playing an increasingly large and disruptive role in our society\, Ghost in the Shell has never been a more relevant film to reexamine than today. Don’t miss this 30th anniversary screening presented by Strange Brew celebrating one of the most acclaimed sci-fi anime films of all time. \n\n\n\nThe film will be presented in its dubbed version. \n\n\n\nA Ghost in the Shell – Tachikomatic Days preshow will begin at 6:25 pm.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person.
