SUMMARY:SOLD OUT -- Charlie Chaplin's THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. WAITLIST OPENS 30 MIN. BEFORE SHOWTIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\nIn his controversial masterpiece The Great Dictator\, Charlie Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin\, in his first pure talkie\, brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish “Tomainian” dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Featuring Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in stellar supporting turns\, The Great Dictator\, boldly going after the fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II\, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8bVG8XC-4I\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:HIPS\, HIPS\, HOORAY! (1934) presented by Forbidden Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForbidden Hollywood is a monthly series hosted by STL film critic Katie Carter celebrating the Pre-Code films of the early 1930s\, when movies were wild\, racy\, transgressive\, and tons of fun. \n\n\n\nOne thing the 1934 pre-Code musical comedy Hips\, Hips\, Hooray! can’t be accused of is not delivering on its title: there are hips galore\, as evidenced by the bevy of scantily-clad female cast members who saunter across the screen\, and plenty of hooray in the film’s zany plot turns (it’s about rival cosmetics companies\, sort of)\, borderline deranged song-and-dance numbers\, and cornball sense of humor. Directed for RKO by Mark Sandrich (who went on to helm several of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ most famous vehicles) and starring Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey — a wildly popular comedy team in the early 1930s whose short-lived career means they haven’t sustained the legacy of some of their contemporaries — Hips\, Hips\, Hooray! showcases the duo’s brand of sexual comedy at its peak\, with comedienne Thelma Todd\, torch singer Ruth Etting\, and Wheeler and Woolsey regular Dorothy Lee providing ample support. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. Information about content can also be found on Common Sense Media\, IMDB and DoesTheDogDie.com\, as well as through general internet searches. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:Steamy French Thriller Classic LA PISCINE (1969) w/ '60s French Pop Pre-Show @ 4:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Involves four of the most outrageously photogenic actors to ever appear on screen… We sit and revel in the glamour of it all\, waiting for those hormonal and homicidal impulses to boil over – as\, of course\, they do.” – Senses of Cinema \n\n\n\nThe bright sun of the French Riviera is deceptive in this alluring work of slow-burn suspense from thriller specialist Jacques Deray and legendary screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière. Formerly one of European cinema’s most iconic real-life couples\, Alain Delon and Romy Schneider reunited for this film\, bringing a palpable erotic chemistry to their performances as the bronzed and beautiful vacationers whose summer holiday on the Côte d’Azur is interrupted by the arrival of an old acquaintance (Maurice Ronet) and his eighteen-year-old daughter (Jane Birkin)—unleashing a gathering wave of sexual tension\, jealousy\, and sudden violence. A paragon of 1960s modernist cool thanks to effortlessly chic clothes and a loungy Michel Legrand score\, La piscine dives deep to reveal sinister undercurrents roiling beneath its seductive surfaces. \n\n\n\nIn honor of Legrand’s impossibly groovy score\, we’ll have a curated pre-show of ’60s French Pop music before the film\, starting at 4:30 pm. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s POOL PARTY series\, featuring movies that allow you to beat the summer heat (vicariously) by taking a dip in the cool waters of a swimming pool\, even as mystery\, murder and heartbreak lurk on the horizon… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997) with Backlot Bring-Your-Own-Pool Party -- SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a 4th of July slasher classic I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER with an outdoor screening where you can BYO-pool! You read that right. Bring your own kiddie pool and we’ll fill it up. Tickets for this event always go fast so get ’em while they’re hot! \n\n\n\n“A must-see for its perfect mix of 90s charm\, genuine scares\, and timeless appeal” – JoBlo \n\n\n\nIf Scream deconstructed the slasher template\, I Know What You Did Last Summer showed you can still squeeze plenty of chills out of dogged adherence to the formula: Gather a bunch of pretty young actors and pick them off one-by-one with sadistic glee. And the actors don’t come much prettier than this absolute who’s-who of ’90s heartthrobs: Sarah Michelle Gellar\, Freddie Prinze Jr.\, Ryan Phillippe\, and of course Jennifer Love Hewitt. On July 4\, 1996\, four friends driving on an isolated road smash their car into a mysterious figure that seems to emerge from nowhere\, and they make a pact that will change their lives for the bloodier.
