SUMMARY:LEGEND (1985) w/ Bryan Ferry pre-show @ 6:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A truly Freudian fairytale…exudes a disorientating\, almost druggy\, other-worldliness.” – Telegraph \n\n\n\nAfter changing the face of science fiction cinema forever with Alien and Blade Runner\, director Ridley Scott turned his visionary eye to the fantasy genre\, teaming with writer William Hjortsberg (Angel Heart) to create a breathtaking cinematic fairytale with one of the screen’s most astonishingly rendered depictions of Evil. A baby-faced Tom Cruise plays pure-hearted Jack\, who takes his true love Princess Lili (Mia Sara) to see a pair of unicorns frolicking at the forest’s edge. Little do they know\, however\, that the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry\, delivering a truly majestic camp-devil performance underneath a metric ton of make-up designed by The Thing maestro Rob Bottin) has dispatched his minions to capture the unicorns and sever their horns so that he may plunge the world into everlasting night. After Lili and the unicorns are taken prisoner\, Jack must team with a group of forest creatures and descend into Darkness’ subterranean lair to face off against the devilish creature before it is too late. \n\n\n\nDespite a troubled production in which the elaborate full-size forest set was accidentally incinerated and a lengthy post-production that resulted in multiple versions of the film\, LEGEND has been embraced as a cult classic and remains one of the most immersive and truly gorgeous fantasy worlds ever created on screen. We will be presenting the film in its original U.S. theatrical cut\, complete with the Tangerine Dream score and climactic Bryan Ferry power ballad that American Legend fans know and love. \n\n\n\nAnd speaking of Bryan Ferry\, come out early for a Ferry pre-show starting at 6:30 pm\, featuring some of the suave crooner’s finest tunes\, both as a solo artist and as front man for the immortal Roxy Music. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s month-long series KNIGHTY KNIGHT\, featuring knights in shining armor and other medieval tales! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. We follow the MPAA rating guidelines for all other films.\n\n\n\nTickets can be purchased using the BUY TICKETS link above. Upon ordering\, you will receive a confirmation email from Square. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the show at the concession counter.\n\n\n\nIf you’ve purchased advance tickets\, when you arrive\, please give your name at the concession counter to check in. \n\n\n\nTickets are returnable by sending a request through the contact form located on our About Us page prior to showtime.\n\n\n\nWhen an event is sold out\, we reserve the right to release open seats to customers on the waitlist. If you have a pre-purchased ticket and arrive late and there is no seat for you\, your ticket will be refunded.\n\n\n\nAll screenings are held in our indoor theater unless indicated otherwise in the event description above.\n\n\n\nPlease respect your fellow movie-goers by remaining quiet and refraining from using your cell phone throughout the screening.

Cult trashterpieces\, so-bad-they’re-good crapfests\, movies that make you ask “What the hell am I watching?!” — we’ve got ’em all on Friday night. \n\n\n\n“Holy f*cking sh*t\, this is insane” – Sally Jane Black \n\n\n\nIf you’re familiar with Everything Is Terrible!’s crate-digging mastery\, you have some idea what you’re in for. If you don’t\, strap in and get ready to blast off to the deepest\, darkest corners of our brain-bleeding collective unconscious. Those krazed VHS-hunting pupz from Everything Is Terrible! (everyone’s favorite found footage chop shoppe) are back with their third inner-eye-opening feature\, containing a feat never before attempted in either human or canine history. EIT! asks but two simple questions: 1. “What if we make a movie composed ENTIRELY out of dog-related found footage?”\, and 2. “What if this magickal movie\, made up of thousands of other dog movies\, is also a remake of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1973 masterpiece The Holy Mountain?” Well\, let’s stop asking dumb rhetorical questions because this never-ending spiral of World-Pup winning\, sunglasses-wearing\, murder-solving\, skateboarding pooches is real! \n\n\n\nWe’ll also be presenting some of our favorite Everything Is Terrible! short-form content before the madness of Doggiewoggiez commences.

SUMMARY:Ida Lupino's gripping noir classic THE HITCH-HIKER (1953)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Absolutely assured in her creation of the bleak\, noir atmosphere – whether in the claustrophobic confines of the car\, or lost in the arid expanses of the desert – Lupino never relaxes the tension for one moment… Taut\, tough\, and entirely without macho-glorification\, it’s a gem\, with first-class performances from its three protagonists\, deftly characterised without resort to cliché.” – Time Out Film Guide \n\n\n\nAn A-List actress-turned-independent writer\, producer\, and director\, Ida Lupino is one of the few female filmmakers to have worked in 1950s Hollywood. But her films are not just “famous firsts” — they’re tough\, raw\, sensitive and totally fresh. Unlike anything else being made at the time\, Lupino’s directorial efforts “represent”—as no less an authority than Martin Scorsese put it—”a singular achievement in American cinema.” And there’s no better example of Lupino’s muscular work than her legendary noir-thriller\, THE HITCH-HIKER. Based on true events\, the film takes us on the vacation from hell\, as businessmen Edmond O’Brien and Frank Lovejoy\, on their way to do some fishing\, pick up the wrong guy: psychopath William Talman. A major influence on films like The Hitcher\, THE HITCH-HIKER is a “tension-packed tour de force” (Ronnie Scheib). No wonder it was Lupino’s personal favorite of her films. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s NOIRVEMBER series\, $3 Sunday matinees of film noir classics that spotlight the broken dreams and bitter paranoia of this distinctly American genre. SUMMARY:MARKETA LAZAROVÁ (1967) presented by Lost in the Arthouse
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLOST IN THE ARTHOUSE is a monthly series hosted by Arkadin co-owner Keith Watson that takes you to hidden corners of filmdom far from Hollywood. From must-see classics to obscurities waiting to be discovered\, these films stand at cinema’s bleeding edge. \n\n\n\n“Marketa Lazarová sweeps us up in a sort of rapture before we even get our feet on the ground. František Vláčil directs with a symphonic variation of tone and pace\, moving with assurance from the frenetic to the contemplative\, the horrific to the erotic.” – Tom Gunning \n\n\n\nIn its native land\, František Vláčil’s MARKETA LAZAROVÁ has been hailed as the greatest Czech film ever made in a poll of over 100 Czech film critics. For those outside of Czechia who’ve yet to discover it\, the film is a revelation. Based on a novel by Vladislav Vančura\, this stirring and poetic depiction of a feud between two rival medieval clans is a fierce\, epic\, and meticulously designed evocation of the clashes between Christianity and paganism\, humankind and nature\, love and violence. Vláčil’s approach was to re-create the textures and mentalities of a long-ago way of life\, rather than to make a conventional historical drama\, and the result is dazzling. With its inventive widescreen cinematography\, editing\, and sound design\, MARKETA LAZAROVÁ is an experimental action film. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s month-long series KNIGHTY KNIGHT\, featuring knights in shining armor and other medieval tales! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:EMANON (1987) presented by St. Louis Video Society
DESCRIPTION:SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY digs deep in its extensive archives to present the weirdest\, wildest\, most incredible VHS obscurities. Always free\, always presented by Video Society archivist James Milam! \n\n\n\nWhat is Emanon? Or rather\, WHO is EMANON?! Why he’s a magical\, mysterious homeless man played by writer/director Stuart Paul in one of the most bizarre vanity projects ever conceived. This “modern-day wino Christ” (LA Weekly) must help a very wealthy\, sick child (Growing Pains‘ Jeremy Miller) and his fashion-designer mom overcome the grief of losing a loved one. Not one to shy away from savior vibes\, the titular Emanon makes messianic mischief as he spouts half-baked\, New Age psychobabble\, all while saving the family’s floundering fashion business. The film itself is a family affair with not just one\, but SIX (!) Pauls working in front of\, and behind\, the camera–including Baby Geniuses franchise producer Steven Paul. They’re practically the Osmonds with so much talent in their DNA! \n\n\n\nEMANON (1987) has never been released on DVD\, Blu-ray or streaming\, so this is a once in lifetime chance to catch the film on VHS at Arkadin on Monday November 10th at 7pm! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Abel Gance's anti-war epic J'ACCUSE (1919) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\n“One of the most terrible indictments against war which it is possible to imagine” -Kinematograph Weekly \n\n\n\nFive months after the armistice was signed that ended World War I\, Abel Gance premiered his epic J’ACCUSE in Paris. Many of his Gance’s friends had been killed in the trenches\, and\, as the director later explained\, “J’ACCUSE for me was not just a film…I had a feeling of frenzy to use this new medium\, the cinema\, to show the world the stupidity of war.” And show it he did\, with the vibrant style and epic scope that defines the work of this brilliant early-film auteur. The main story is a love triangle between Jean\, a pacifist poet\, who’s in love with Edith\, who is in turn unhappily married to François\, a brutish provincial farmer. When war is declared\, both men join the army\, serving in the same frontline regiment. Battling the Germans together\, Jean and François reach an uneasy truce \, but back at home\, Edith is put in harm’s way due to her husband’s jealous suspicions. The film was incorporates real battle footage\, as well as actual letters sent home by two of Gance’s friends who died in the war. J’ACCUSE’s celebrated “Return of the Dead” sequence was filmed using 2\,000 soldiers on leave. The film remains a blistering indictment of war that sadly resonates to this day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE GREEN KNIGHT (2021) w/ animated "Green Knight" pre-show
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A dazzling\, dizzying fever dream…It’s always a thrilling thing when a filmmaker creates an entire world that engulfs us from the opening moments\, and that’s certainly the case with The Green Knight.” – Chicago Sun-Times \n\n\n\nAn epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend\, David Lowery’s majestic\, mysterious THE GREEN KNIGHT tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel)\, King Arthur’s (Sean Harris) reckless and headstrong nephew\, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight (Ralph Ineson)\, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts\, giants\, thieves\, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. Cult trashterpieces\, so-bad-they’re-good crapfests\, movies that make you ask “What the hell am I watching?!” — we’ve got ’em all on Friday night. \n\n\n\n“The right kind of fowl humor… You can’t quit this one cold turkey!” -Film Inquiry \n\n\n\nIt’s Shanks-giving time again as we ring in Thanksgiving with one of the most glorious Turkeys in cult cinema: the immortal THANKSKILLING! A demonic turkey is unleashed…and he’s one fowl-mouthed bastard! Five college kids: a jock\, a good girl\, an overweight red-neck\, a slut\, and a nerd head home for Thanksgiving break\, each thankful for the chance of holiday hookups. But when their car suddenly overheats\, they trespass into the woods for a night of drinking and bonfire debauchery. Little do they know\, these are the same woods where an ancient turkey was necromanced 386 years ago by an Indian curse after the very first Thanksgiving. Now\, The Killer Turkey is awakened and ready for revenge on the first white men he comes in contact with! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:George A. Romero's moto-jousting epic KNIGHTRIDERS (1981)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A BRILLIANT FILM\, even though no one paid it much attention when it was released in 1981…Knightriders is about 50 percent scenes of kick-ass moto-jousting\, 40 percent philosophizing around the campfire\, and 10 percent lyrical shots of King William trying to exist in the same landscape as fast-food restaurants.” – Noel Murray\, The Dissolve \n\n\n\nThough best known for revolutionizing the zombie film with Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead\, George A. Romero’s masterpiece might just be a hard-to-describe\, impossible-to-sell tale of a traveling band of motorcycle-riding medieval reenactors who stage elaborate (and dangerous) moto-jousting shows at Ren Faires around rural Pennsylvania. A deeply personal epic of masculine fragility\, contemporary alienation and creative community-building\, the film features Ed Harris in his first starring role as the troupe’s mercurial leader King William\, a man outside time whose chivalrous ideals run up against the modern world’s hunger for cheap thrills and big money. In a meta touch\, Romero’s long-time collaborator Tom Savini (designer of special effects and makeup for many of Romero’s horror efforts) co-stars as the Black Knight\, whose willingness to sell out King William’s vision could cause the group’s fracture. KNIGHTRIDERS was\, unsurprisingly\, a flop upon its release\, but this massively underseen masterpiece deserves rediscovery as a pivotal film in Romero’s filmography\, a vital modern translation of Arthurian legend\, and one of the most incisive cinematic explorations of the fraternity that forms around creative pursuits. SUMMARY:Fritz Lang's nightmarish noir SCARLET STREET (1945) -- $3
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“ONE OF THE 25 GREATEST NOIRS OF ALL TIME! Deeply perverse\, and immensely enjoyable for the ways writer Dudley Nichols and Fritz Lang run circles around the Production Code.” – Eddie Muller\, host of TCM’s Noir Alley \n\n\n\nA psychologically complex melodrama written in glistening black-and-white\, SCARLET STREET finds one of cinema’s great poets of doom at his fatalistic peak. Having struck gold with 1944’s The Woman in the Window\, Lang reassembled that film’s dynamite leads\, Edward G. Robinson\, Joan Bennett\, and Dan Duryea\, again the following year for SCARLET STREET. The quartet knocked another one out of the park\, producing a film noir so potent it was banned in Atlanta\, Milwaukee\, and the entire state of New York. Robinson stars as Chris Cross\, a lonely and unhappily married clerk who falls for a brassy prostitute (Bennett)\, not realizing that she’s in love with her pimp (Duryea) and that the pair are milking him for whatever cash he can earn or steal. The atmosphere is thick with all the guilt\, paranoia\, and cynicism you’d expect from the man who gave us M\, and it all leads toward one of the most nightmarish dénouements in noir history. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s NOIRVEMBER series\, $3 Sunday matinees of film noir classics that spotlight the broken dreams and bitter paranoia of this distinctly American genre.

SUMMARY:Weirdo Estonian Folk Horror NOVEMBER (2017) -- 𝔉𝔬𝔩𝔨 ℌ𝔬𝔯𝔯𝔬𝔯 𝔄𝔯𝔬𝔲𝔫𝔡 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔚𝔬𝔯𝔩𝔡
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Part Grimm fairy tale\, part Eastern European folklore\, and all fever dream…it’s as beautiful as it is profoundly weird as fuck.” – Rolling Stone \n\n\n\nSet in a pagan Estonian village where werewolves\, the plague\, and spirits roam\, Rainer Sarnet’s third feature film is a bold\, twisted fairy tale about unrequited love. In NOVEMBER\, the villagers’ main problem is how to survive the cold\, dark winter. And\, to that aim\, nothing is taboo. People steal from each other\, from their German manor lords\, from spirits\, the devil\, and from Christ. They are willing to give away their souls to thieving creatures made of wood and metal called kratts\, who help their masters\, whose soul they purchased\, steal even more. A young farmgirl Liina (Rea Lest) is hopelessly in love with Hans (Jörgen Liik)\, a nearby farmhand\, whose heart she loses to the daughter of the German manor lord. In order to regain his love\, Liina turns to any means necessary\, even if that means tapping into the black magic that is circling around the village. Estonian pagan legends and Christian mythologies come to a spell-binding intersection in NOVEMBER. \n\n\n\nEach month\, Arkadin presents a selection of FOLK HORROR AROUND THE WORLD\, creepy folktales from all corner of the globe to give you the Sunday scaries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE FIRST WIVES CLUB (1996) presented by Girlhood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGirlhood is a semi-regular series hosted by Arkadin co-owner Sarah Baraba that spotlights stories of sisterhood on the silver screen. \n\n\n\n“Exhilaratingly woman-positive and funny!” – On The Issues \n\n\n\nStarring powerhouse comediennes Diane Keaton (RIP)\, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler\, THE FIRST WIVES CLUB continues to deliver delights nearly 30 years on. Three college besties reunite after a tragedy and discover that they have more in common than their ambition to succeed in life (and their Lesley Gore fandom) — they also all have scumbag cheating husbands who need to learn a lesson. So these baddies wrangle their wits to bring down the patriarchy. Though at its heart a comedy\, FWC tackles heavy issues — identity\, aging\, self-esteem\, alcoholism\, changing friendship dynamics — as our heroines realize that maybe revenge is a dish best served through building each other up rather than tearing each other down. Is it the perfect feminist film? Certainly not. But as the film repeatedly points out — it’s the 90s!  \n\n\n\nThe film will be preceded by a “You Don’t Own Me” sing-along. Dressing in white pantsuits is strongly encouraged\, but not required. SUMMARY:Heath Ledger in A KNIGHT'S TALE (2001)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Tremendous\, infectious fun\, with a rocking soundtrack” – Radio Times \n\n\n\nThis Black Friday at Arkadin…Heath will rock you. Starring Heath Ledger as a lowborn squire masquerading as a nobleman\, A KNIGHT’S TALE is a truly delightful\, profoundly unserious riff on Chaucerian legend that updated the Middle Ages for the Millennial generation with all the historical accuracy of a Medieval Times show. With gleefully anachronistic arena-rock needle drops\, brawny jousting stunts\, and a subversively feminist streak\, this pumped-up crowd-pleaser is part road trip\, part romance\, and all exuberant action-adventure. Featuring Heath at his dreamboat peak\, along with breakout performances by Shannyn Sossamon\, Mark Addy\, and Rufus Sewell\, A KNIGHT’S TALE is a refreshing blast of pure foot-stomping fun. \n\n\n\nAlso\, come out before the film for an ARENA ROCK PRE-SHOW starting at 6:30 pm! SUMMARY:Soviet Fantasy Adventure ILYA MUROMETS (1956\, a.k.a. The Sword and the Dragon)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Packing an astonishing amount into ninety minutes\, Ilya Muromets is much more than its fantasy label indicates. You get a huge-scale period war film\, a love story\, a musical and a creature feature with that three-headed dragon rearing up in the big climax.” – Nathaniel Thompson\, Mondo Digital \n\n\n\nAleksandr Ptushko\, esteemed master of the Soviet cinematic spectacle\, crafted his crown jewel with the awe-inspiring ILYA MUROMETS\, which must be seen to be believed. An epic tale of a Russian knight’s campaign against the dastardly Tugars\, who destroyed his village\, ILYA MUROMETS features swordplay\, wild special effects\, gargantuan battle sequences featuring hundreds of extras\, and a massive\, three-headed flying dragon. Released in a mangled edit by producer Roger Corman and re-titled The Sword and the Dragon\, the true glory of ILYA MUROMETS had long been unknown in the U.S. But with Deaf Crocodile’s sparkling restoration\, the whole world can appreciate this unparalleled journey into Soviet fantasy filmmaking’s wild wonders. \n\n\n\nCome out early for a Soviet Fantasy Pre-Show starting at 2:30 pm! SUMMARY:Dark fantasy masterpiece EXCALIBUR (1981)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A near-perfect blend of action\, romance\, fantasy and philosophy\, finely acted and beautifully filmed” – Variety \n\n\n\nIn the early 1980s\, visionary director John Boorman (Zardoz) delivered one of the greatest fantasy films of all time\, a hard-edged\, R-rated treatment of Arthurian legend that spawned the ’80s dark fantasy boom. Inspired by Sir Thomas Malory’s classic Le Morte d’Arthur\, EXCALIBUR depicts the classic tale of Arthur (Nigel Terry) removing the sword Excalibur from the stone\, teaming up with the wizard Merlin (Nicol Williamson)\, forming the Knights of the Round Table\, and questing for the Holy Grail with muscular action and an impeccable beauty. Featuring majestic costumes\, intense special effects\, and glistening cinematography that earned an Oscar nod\, EXCALIBUR is one of the purest attempts to translate sword-and-sorcery mythology to the big screen. The film features Liam Neeson\, Patrick Stewart\, and Gabriel Byrne in early screen roles\, as well as Helen Mirren as the spellbinding enchantress Morgan le Fay. Packed with action\, magic\, and surprisingly rich ideas\, it’s no wonder EXCALIBUR has earned a legion of fans\, including filmmaker Zack Snyder\, who named this “perfect meeting of movies and mythology” his favorite movie of all time. SUMMARY:A man investigates his own murder in... D.O.A. (1950) -- $3
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A breakneck\, almost berserk spin on the classic detective yarn” – Eddie Muller\, host of TCM’s Noir Alley \n\n\n\nHow’s this for a premise?: A mysterious stranger pours a toxin into a man’s drink\, and now the man has only a week to find his murderer before the poison kills him. That’s the basis for this frenzied film noir classic starring Edmond O’Brien (whom you might recognize from The Hitch-Hiker\, also screening this month at Arkadin) as hapless accountant Frank Bigelow\, who is unwittingly embroiled in a complex web of intrigue as he races to save his own life. Bigelow embarks on a lurid odyssey of double-dealing\, betrayal and murder that begins with “one of cinema’s most innovative opening sequences” (BBC) and leads to a nightmarish climax. Preserved by the National Film Registry\, this brooding\, paranoid classic is powered by O’Brien’s fevered\, nearly unhinged\, performance as well as director Rudolph Maté’s shadowy direction. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s NOIRVEMBER series\, $3 Sunday matinees of film noir classics that spotlight the broken dreams and bitter paranoia of this distinctly American genre. The Martian invasion of Earth has begun\, and it seems that nothing—neither military might nor the scientific know-how of nuclear physicist (and MST3k “mad” namesake) Dr. Clayton Forrester (Gene Barry)—can stop it. In the expert hands of genre specialists George Pal and Byron Haskin\, H. G. Wells’s end-of-civilization classic receives a chilling Cold War–era update\, complete with hallucinatory Technicolor and visionary\, Oscar-winning special effects. Emblazoned with iconographic images of 1950s science fiction\, The War of the Worlds is both an influential triumph of visual imagination and a still-disquieting document of the wonder and terror of the atomic age. \n\n\n\nCome out early for a pre-show starting at 3 pm where we’ll listen to the broadcast that traumatized a nation\, Orson Welles’ legendary 1938 dramatic radio adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Jim Jarmusch's NIGHT ON EARTH (1991) w/ Tom Waits pre-show presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nNIGHT ON EARTH contains five vignettes linked together by parallel narratives of bizarre taxi rides. The film tells the individual stories of taxi drivers and their unique passengers over the course of one night in five different cities: Los Angeles\, New York City\, Paris\, Rome and Helsinki. Written\, produced and directed by American independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch\, his 1991 anthology film features a huge ensemble cast that includes Winona Ryder\, Gena Rowlands\, Giancarlo Esposito\, Rosie Perez\, Roberto Benigni and more\, as well as a soundtrack by eccentric composer Tom Waits. Each sonder-evoking story\, some of which are comedic like “Helmut & Yo-Yo” in New York and others heartbreakingly tragic such as the determined taxi driver’s tale in Helsinki\, paint the poetic\, life-affirming commonality of strangers’ brief interactions that could be happening simultaneously anytime\, anywhere on the planet.   \n\n\n\nA Tom Waits music video pre-show will begin at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:TALES FROM THE CRYPT (1972) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“One of the best of Amicus’s anthologies\, maintaining the right balance between ghoulish horror and tongue-in-cheek humor.” J. Watts\, Cinema Essentials \n\n\n\nThe first film adaptation of the legendary EC horror comics\, Amicus’s Tales from the Crypt provided the midway point between the demise of EC in 1956 and the debut of the titular HBO series in 1989. Comprised of five stories from several EC titles\, the film features such stars as Joan Collins and Peter Cushing giving life to some of the most morbid tales ever splashed across a four-color page. The segments are: \n\n\n\n\nAnd All Through the House: While attempting to dispose of her husband’s body on Christmas Eve\, a young widow finds herself trapped by a psychotic Santa on the prowl.\n\n\n\nReflection of Death: The survivor of a car crash is met with horror from passerby as he tries to make his way home.\n\n\n\nPoetic Justice: A lonely old man is driven to the brink by his cruel-hearted neighbors\, but enjoys his own karmic retribution.\n\n\n\nWish You Were Here: In a modern update of “The Monkey’s Paw”\, a ruthless businessman is granted three wishes\, and lives to regret each one.\n\n\n\nBlind Alleys: The residents of a Dickensian home for the blind exact revenge upon their cruel new headmaster.\n\n\n\n\nCome celebrate the season of ghost stories as we close out the year with this classic clutch of tales. Show up early for an HBO preshow at 6:10pm! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:WTO/99 (2025) -- new release!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Some documentaries just feel like a sock in the jaw. Ian Bell’s fiery and explosive archival picture WTO/99 is that kind of film. Built on local news footage\, MiniDV videocassettes\, CCTV images\, and more\, Bell’s charged film… takes viewers back to 1999\, a moment when class united more than politics divided.” – Robert Daniels\, RogerEbert.com \n\n\n\nIn late 1999\, members of the emerging World Trade Organization convened in Seattle\, Washington\, for what was supposed to be a series of routine negotiations. Instead\, they were met with one of the largest U.S. protests of global powers in the 20th century. Protesters from across the aisle representing everything from labor rights to environmental protections filled the streets in droves\, with signs and video cameras in tow. Crafted from a stunning array of newscaster broadcasts and outtakes\, citizen journalist tapes\, home videos\, and press conferences\, WTO/99 is an entirely archival film chronicling this consequential four-day event. In a galvanizing\, layered\, and occasionally cheeky manner\, a direct line unfolds between the WTO protests and the issues of corporate control and environmental degradation we still reckon with 25 years later. \n\n\n\nWant to chart the degraded trajectory of the U.S. power elite even further? Then grab a ticket to the mind-melting mash-up film HELLO DANKNESS\, which takes surrealistic satirical aim at our present political calamity. Together\, these films form a double-header charting the precipitous decline of the AmeriKKKan ruling class. \n\n\n\nWTO/99 is playing twice at Arkadin\, once on Dec. 5 at 7 pm and again on Dec. 6 at 4:30 pm. SUMMARY:Mind-melting mashup HELLO DANKNESS (2022) -- Friday Night WTF!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A fresh and unforgettable cinematic experience. Built from samples of movies\, public speeches\, famous songs\, and even memes… stitched together to create a vivid representation of American culture before and after the 2016 elections… You’ve never seen a film quite like this one before.” – Collider \n\n\n\nThe Australian-born\, Brooklyn-based siblings\, Soda Jerk\, repurpose and collage classic films. They describe their hilariously warped narrative feature\, HELLO DANKNESS\, as a “political fable that bears witness to the psychotropic spectacle of American politics from 2016 to 2021.” Sampling 500+ clips from movies\, television\, commercials\, memes\, and news footage\, the film situates our political fissures within a suburban neighborhood inhabited by characters from popular comedies and horror films. Players and trolls from the 2016 election (Hillary Clinton\, Bernie Sanders\, Donald Trump\, Vladimir Putin\, Mark Zuckerberg\, MAGA and QAnon followers) are ingeniously grafted into these scenes to eerily send up the absurdities of American politics today. It is “a gleeful satire of our strange political times.” (The Hollywood Reporter) \n\n\n\nWant to chart the degraded trajectory of the U.S. power elite even further? Then grab a ticket to gripping found-footage doc WTO/99\, which takes us back to the nascent origins of our deeply fractured political climate. Together\, these films form a double-header charting the precipitous decline of the AmeriKKKan ruling class.
