Less a sequel to the 1984 original than a feverish parody of it\, Joe Dante’s madcap satire moves the action from small-town Kingston Falls to the Big Apple\, where the mischievous little monsters wreak havoc upon a New York City skyscraper. With gloriously gloopy Rick Baker effects\, a gag-a-minute ratio that would leave Mel Brooks’ head spinning\, and an onslaught of pop-culture references ranging from Rambo to Ray Harryhausen\, GREMLINS 2 is a chance to watch a brilliant filmmaker unleash his movie-addled id all over the screen. These are humanity’s greatest cultural achievements (and while we suspect Tex Avery and the Termite Terrace gang could’ve knocked out the Mona Lisa in a weekend\, we’re sure Leonard da Vinci never could’ve produced “Red Hot Riding Hood”). What better way to lead in to our Friday night screening of Gremlins 2\, cinema’s greatest live-action cartoon\, than with a selection of the funniest\, most fabulous cartoon-cartoons ever made? Bugs\, Daffy\, Porky\, Sylvester\, Tweety\, Wile E.
