SUMMARY:BLACKADDER'S CHRISTMAS CAROL (1988) -- Free!
DESCRIPTION:“Mere words cannot do this bizarre rendition of A Christmas Carol justice\, but I will try\, it was simply one of the funniest pieces of TV I have ever watched. Forty-five minutes later everything that I thought were the best Christmas parodies had been totally blown away by this outrageously hilarious and scintillatingly naughty BBC take on the Dickens classic.” – Ruthless Reviews \n\n\n\nA wonderfully sardonic twist on Dickens’ immortal classic\, this legendary Christmas special spun off from Richard Curtis (Love\, Actually) and Ben Elton’s (The Young Ones) beloved classic sitcom Blackadder is hilarious whether you’ve re-watched the whole series a hundred times or never even heard of it before. Rowan Atkinson stars as Ebenezer Blackadder\, a kindly shop owner who mends the error of his generous ways after he’s visited by three spirits who inadvertently show him that being a nice guy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Witty\, cutting\, and oh so clever\, BLACKADDER’S CHRISTMAS SPECIAL features a who’s-who of Brit-com legends\, including Tony Robinson\, Miranda Richardson\, Miriam Margolyes\, Jim Broadbent\, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry. It’s the perfect way to kick off an afternoon of Ghost Stories for Christmas! \n\n\n\nThis event is free. No ticket required. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of our December series\, IT’S KIND OF A CHRISTMAS MOVIE\, showcasing some off-beat Yuletide(ish) tales to warm your soul this winter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:GHOST STORIES FOR CHRISTMAS -- $3
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBroadcast in the dying hours of Christmas Eve\, the BBC’s A GHOST STORY FOR CHRISTMAS series was a fixture of the seasonal schedules throughout the 1970s and spawned a long tradition of chilling tales\, which terrified yuletide viewers for decades to come. These spare\, atmospheric dramas ran from 30 to 90 minutes and drew heavily on the stories of horror-fiction pioneer M.R. James. Often set in Victorian and Edwardian times\, these compact ghost stories play brilliantly with the power of suggestion. We’ll be presenting a selection of a few of the finest films in this series to give you a chill this Christmas. \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of our December series\, IT’S KIND OF A CHRISTMAS MOVIE\, showcasing some off-beat Yuletide(ish) tales to warm your soul this winter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:$3 MONDAY MYSTERY MOVIE: A Raucous Comedy for New Year's
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the last Monday of every month\, Arkadin chooses an underseen deep cut to inflict upon an unwitting audience. Though the genre and tone may change\, the price always remains the same: three measly bucks. You can’t afford not to get yourself a ticket! \n\n\n\nGet ready to ring in the new year with one of the most criminally underrated and underseen American comedies of all time. As relentlessly hilarious as The Naked Gun\, as lyrically sweet-natured as Singin’ in the Rain and as ultra-cool as a Jim Jarmusch joint\, this wild\, free-form satire might just be the greatest New Year’s Eve movie ever made. So let’s break out the champagne and raise a toast to this mystery should-be classic. SUMMARY:THE ORPHANAGE (2007) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“It’s scary as hell\, and perfectly crafted to be scary as hell.” Tim Brayton\, Alternate Ending \n\n\n\nRaised as an orphan on the coast of Spain\, Laura returns to the seaside home of her youth with her husband Carlos and their adopted son\, Simón. But something else dwells there\, too\, as revealed when Simón befriends a spectral child in a sackcloth mask—and when her son disappears\, Laura must face the ghosts of her own past to find him. Produced by Guillermo del Toro\, The Orphanage is a haunting foray into heartrending terror. A tribute to such classics as The Innocents and The Changeling\, this Spanish-Mexican production won praise for its lush aesthetic and brooding atmosphere. Shot on location in northwestern Spain—and making full use of the region’s beaches\, lighthouses\, and caves—The Orphanage immerses viewers in a world of spirits and secrets\, pitched somewhere between the waking world of the living and the nightmarish land of the dead. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. THE WORLD remains\, over 15 years after its initial lackluster theatrical release\, a monumental touchstone in the annals of geekdom. SUMMARY:STAND BY ME (1986) w/ Rob Reiner tribute pre-show @ 2:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“An absorbing\, touching examination of the loss of innocence that undeniably deserves its place in the heart of a generation.” – Empire \n\n\n\nDuring one of the most extraordinary directorial runs in cinema’s history\, Rob Reiner made the foundational mockumentary (This Is Spinal Tap)\, the ultimate fantasy adventure (The Princess Bride)\, the quintessential rom-com (When Harry Met Sally…)\, an all-timer courtroom drama (A Few Good Men)\, and\, of course\, one of the all-time great coming-of-age films\, STAND BY ME. Arkadin pays tribute to Reiner’s legacy—cut tragically and violently short—with a screening of this enduring classic of boyhood camaraderie and the loss of innocence. Based on a short story by Steven King\, the film follows a group of friends as they traverse the wilderness to take a peek a dead body\, a journey that will change them forever. Assembling an incredible cast of future stars\, including Wil Wheaton\, River Phoenix\, Corey Feldman\, and Jerry O’Connell\, STAND BY ME showcases Reiner’s humanism\, his warm (yet sharp) sense of humor\, and his rare ability to explore life’s darker corners with a delicate touch. \n\n\n\nA Rob Reiner tribute pre-show\, featuring clips of the legendary actor-director-writer-producer will precede the film starting at 2:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. SUMMARY:Animated Sci-fi Cult Classic HEAVY METAL (1981) w/ South Park parody pre-show
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Wild animation\, tons of blaring rock music\, and fanboy wish fulfillment fantasies of the freakiest order. Good campy fun.” – eFilmCritic \n\n\n\nBased on the deliciously horny sci-fi cult comic\, HEAVY METAL combines stunning visuals\, hard rock music\, and a series of mind-bending stories into the cinematic equivalent of one of those epic murals painted on the side of a ’70s Econoline van. In this booberific space adventure anthology\, an eerie green ball magically transports us into a series of tales taking place in the past\, the future\, and the world beyond — telling stories of super space heroine Taarna; the hard-boiled exploits of Harry Canyon\, cab driver of the future; and the adventures of Den\, whom the green ball changes from an introverted teen into a macho hero. Produced by Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman\, overseen by Canadian animator Gerald Potterton\, and featuring voice work from comedy legends John Candy\, Harold Ramis\, Joe Flaherty\, and Eugene Levy\, this groundbreaking animation extravaganza is the ultimate preteen boys’ fantasy come to life. \n\n\n\nCome out early for a pre-show featuring the quintessential Heavy Metal parody\, South Park’s “Major Boobage” beginning at 5:38 pm. \n\n\n\nEach month\, DRAWN VISIONS presents an outré gem from the wild\, wonderful world of animation. Focusing on the strange\, the underseen\, and the unclassifiable\, this series proves cartoons aren’t just for kids\, they’re for total freaks too! \n\n\n\nTᕼIᔕ ᖴIᒪᗰ Iᔕ ᔕᑕᖇEEᑎIᑎG ᗩᔕ ᑭᗩᖇT Oᖴ ᗩᖇKᗩᗪIᑎ’ᔕ ᗯEIᖇᗪ ᑕᗩᑎᗩᗪᗩ ᔕEᖇIEᔕ\, ᖴEᗩTᑌᖇIᑎG OᖴᖴᗷEᗩT\, ᗰᗩᑭᒪE-ᗪᖇEᑎᑕᕼEᗪ ᗪEᒪIGᕼTᔕ ᖴᖇOᗰ TᕼE GᖇEᗩT ᗯᕼITE ᑎOᖇTᕼ. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Cecil B. DeMille's epic of orgiastic excess THE SIGN OF THE CROSS (1932) presented by Forbidden Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForbidden Hollywood is a monthly series hosted by STL film critic Katie Carter celebrating the Pre-Code films of the early 1930s\, when movies were wild\, racy\, transgressive\, and tons of fun. \n\n\n\nDeemed “some of the boldest censor-bait ever attempted in a motion picture\,” Cecil B. DeMille’s 1932 comeback after a string of flops finds the director known for his opulent epics working at his most unhinged and horniest. THE SIGN OF THE CROSS tells the story of forbidden love between Roman prefect Marcus Superbus (Fredric March) and Christian woman Mercia (Elissa Landi) during the time when Ancient Rome was ruled over by the mad Emperor Nero (Charles Laughton). Any sanctimonious messaging in DeMille’s adaptation of the play of the same name is overrun by its brash portrait of excess and depravity. Whether it was the queer content—both in regards to Laughton’s portrayal of Nero and the lesbian seduction dance intended to sway the pious Mercia away from her faith—the brutal torture scenes and violent arena climax pitting everything from Amazon warriors to pygmies to an assortment of wild animals against each other (prompting reports of audience members fainting in shock)\, or the famous scene in which a nude Empress Poppaea (Claudette Colbert) bathes in milk\, there was no shortage of sordid content in THE SIGN OF THE CROSS leading to film historian Mark Vieira referring to it as the most “controversial” film of the pre-Code era\, and to the creation of the Catholic Legion of Decency that ultimately contributed to its end. \n\n\n\n“Cecil B. DeMille’s insanely lavish treatise on the decline and fall of Western Civilization… was made in 1932\, shortly before the Production Code fell so heavily on Hollywood\, and DeMille seizes the opportunity to indulge the full range of his perversity one last time… Thoroughly mad and immensely enjoyable.” – Dave Kehr\, Chicago Reader \n\n\n\nDue to inclement weather\, this screening was rescheduled from Dec. 1\, 2025\, to Jan. 5\, 2026. SUMMARY:Japanese folk-horror anthology KWAIDAN (1964) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nKWAIDAN (怪談\, literally\, ”Ghost Stories”) is an epic\, horror anthology film featuring four unrelated ghost stories directed by legendary Japanese filmmaker Masaki Kobayashi (小林 正樹). In 1964\, director Kobayashi shot the film on vast indoor sound-stages allowing him to create hyper-stylized landscapes but resulted in one of the most expensive Japanese films produced for its era. The film’s massive budget resulted in an initial financial loss of over one hundred million yen\, though as film historians began to acknowledge Kobayashi’s standing as one of Japan’s greatest filmmakers (he also directed Harakiri (切腹) and Samurai Rebellion (上意討ち 拝領妻始末))\, Kwaidan (怪談) was also rediscovered and reevaluated as one of the most visually-stunning horror films ever committed to celluloid. \n\n\n\nAdapted from classic Japanese folktales\, each ghost story in KWAIDAN (怪談) accepts that there is a supernatural realm that is largely unaffected by human suffering. The four stories are all thematically connected through vengeful spirits seeking moral retribution. The stories include: \n\n\n\n\nThe Black Hair (黒髪): A poor samurai leaves his true love and marries into wealth. When his disastrous marriage ends\, he returns to his lost love only to discover a mysterious change.\n\n\n\nThe Woman of the Snow (雪女): A stranded woodcutter meets an icy spirit that spares his life on the condition he will keep her lifesaving bargain a secret. Unfortunately\, he does not keep his promise.\n\n\n\nHoichi the Earless(耳無し芳一の話): Blind musician Hoichi performs songs for a haunted imperial court that aim to drain his life. Monks set out to protect Hoichi by inking a holy mantra over his entire body.\n\n\n\nIn a Cup of Tea (茶碗の中): A man keeps seeing a mysterious face reflected in his cup of tea and makes the mistake of drinking from the cup.\n\n\n\n\nKWAIDAN will be presented by Strange Brew in its original three-hour cut with a brief 10-minute intermission.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:Absurd\, Heartfelt Animated Doc ENDLESS COOKIE (2025) -- new release!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The film is as heartfelt as it is absurd and the conversations and stories are so riveting I found myself almost in trance as I watched this doc. I can’t wait to watch it again.” – Marya E. Gates \n\n\n\nWinner of the Contrechamp Grand Prix at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival\, Seth and Peter Scriver’s freewheeling animated documentary follows Peter—an artist and storyteller from the Shamattawa First Nation—through a series of shaggy dog tales about growing up with his white half‑brother Seth in 1980s Toronto\, and later raising his own children in the remote north. There are chicken heists\, Sasquatch sightings\, trapping mishaps\, and children’s chaotic adventures—woven together with accounts of police profiling\, land grabs\, and the haunting legacy of residential schools. Peter’s storytelling is mirrored in the film’s loose\, surreal cartooning\, where wry humor sharpens into satire to evoke the long shadow of life under Canada’s First Nations policies. At once personal and political\, comedic and fraught\, the film offers a disarmingly profound portrait of race\, identity\, and the complex bonds of family.  \n\n\n\nPlus\, a pre-show of classic Canadian animation precedes the film at 6:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\nIt is a picture infused with love — both for family\, and for the creative act (the film took nearly a decade to complete). It is also a generous invitation into the heart of a sprawling extended family. Wendy Ide\, Screen International \n\n\n\n\nEndless Cookie may be the strangest\, most seemingly nonsensical documentary in some time. DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Fusing the body horror he began to explore in early work like Shivers and Rabid with the cyber-terror and media anxiety he would mine in films like The Fly and eXistenZ\, Videodrome presages the dark web\, 4chan\, Bumfights\, Pornhub\, and nearly half a century’s worth of illicit ‘entertainment.’ Not every horror movie needs to hold up to be a classic. But\, like most Cronenberg movies… it’s still ahead of the curve.” – The Ringer \n\n\n\nWhen Max Renn goes looking for edgy new material for his sleazy cable TV station\, he stumbles across the pirate broadcast of a hyperviolent torture show called “Videodrome.” His attempts to unearth the program’s origins send him on a hallucinatory journey into a shadow world of right-wing conspiracies\, sadomasochistic sex games\, and bodily transformation. Starring James Woods and Blondie’s Debbie Harry\, VIDEODROME is one of the most original and provocative works from writer-director David Cronenberg\, and features groundbreaking makeup effects by Academy Award winner Rick Baker. SUMMARY:David Cronenberg's SCANNERS (1981) -- Friday Night WTF!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Night WTF screenings are cheap\, weird\, and out of control! Cult trashterpieces\, so-bad-they’re-good crapfests\, movies that make you ask “What the hell am I watching?!” — we’ve got ’em all on Friday night. \n\n\n\n“Scanners is a genre classic\, a masterpiece in its own spooky way…It’s a hard-edge\, no-nonsense science fiction thriller.” – Kenneth Turan \n\n\n\nWith SCANNERS\, David Cronenberg plunges us into one of his most terrifying and thrilling sci-fi worlds. After a man with extraordinary—and frighteningly destructive—telepathic abilities is nabbed by agents from a mysterious rogue corporation\, he discovers he is far from the only possessor of such strange powers\, and that some of the other “scanners” have their minds set on world domination\, while others are trying to stop them. A trademark Cronenberg combination of the visceral and the cerebral\, this phenomenally gruesome and provocative film about the expanses and limits of the human mind was the Canadian director’s breakout hit in the United States. SUMMARY:I'VE HEARD THE MERMAIDS SINGING (1987) presented by Girlhood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGirlhood is a semi-regular series hosted by Arkadin co-owner Sarah Baraba that spotlights stories of sisterhood on the silver screen. \n\n\n\n“So fresh\, so funny\, so charming\, it amazes the heart.” – Judith Crist \n\n\n\nPolly doesn’t need much. She’s perfectly content to spend her days people-watching\, snapping photos and transforming her tiny apartment into a make-shift darkroom. And daydreaming. Boy\, does she love dreaming. Unfortunately that doesn’t pay the bills\, so she finds work via a temp agency as an assistant. Also unfortunately\, she’s not good at that and has bounced from position to position. But\, for whatever reason\, her new boss at an art gallery has taken a shine to her and offers her a full time gig. She quickly puts her boss on a pedestal and becomes completely enamored with the art scene. Polly decides to anonymously submit some of her own photographs to the curator in hopes of winning her admiration\, only to witness her ripping her work to shreds. Now disenchanted\, Polly also finds herself in over her head when she unintentionally uncovers an unsavory secret at the gallery that could ruin her boss.  \n\n\n\nAn offbeat and heartfelt first feature from filmmaker Patricia Rozema\, I’VE HEARD THE MERMAIDS SINGING captures the highs and lows of finding your footing in adulthood with dreamy surrealistic touches and a delightfully whimsical flair.  \n\n\n\nTᕼIᔕ ᖴIᒪᗰ Iᔕ ᔕᑕᖇEEᑎIᑎG ᗩᔕ ᑭᗩᖇT Oᖴ ᗩᖇKᗩᗪIᑎ’ᔕ ᗯEIᖇᗪ ᑕᗩᑎᗩᗪᗩ ᔕEᖇIEᔕ\, ᖴEᗩTᑌᖇIᑎG OᖴᖴᗷEᗩT\, ᗰᗩᑭᒪE-ᗪᖇEᑎᑕᕼEᗪ ᗪEᒪIGᕼTᔕ ᖴᖇOᗰ TᕼE GᖇEᗩT ᗯᕼITE ᑎOᖇTᕼ. SUMMARY:PEACHES GOES BANANAS (2024) w/ Peaches pre-show @ 6:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“An extraordinary piece of filmmaking. Shot over 17 years\, it mingles intimate personal moments with visceral concert footage.” – Eye on Film \n\n\n\nFor 17 years\, director Marie Losier has followed the trailblazing\, provocative\, and taboo-shattering career of artist and musician Peaches. From her early life\, to her ascent towards becoming a queer feminist icon\, her story is one that has defied expectations and exemplified fearless exploration and rebellion. PEACHES GOES BANANAS is an intimate portrait of this singular artist. Capturing her thrilling live shows\, artistic process\, close relationships with her family\, and her rise to fame\, the film is a “poetic… two-decade long conversation between two artists” (The Upcoming). \n\n\n\nBefore the show\, starting at 6:30 pm\, we’ll be mixing up some of Peaches’ best and most outrageous music videos and concert clips. \n\n\n\nTᕼIᔕ ᖴIᒪᗰ Iᔕ ᔕᑕᖇEEᑎIᑎG ᗩᔕ ᑭᗩᖇT Oᖴ ᗩᖇKᗩᗪIᑎ’ᔕ ᗯEIᖇᗪ ᑕᗩᑎᗩᗪᗩ ᔕEᖇIEᔕ\, ᖴEᗩTᑌᖇIᑎG OᖴᖴᗷEᗩT\, ᗰᗩᑭᒪE-ᗪᖇEᑎᑕᕼEᗪ ᗪEᒪIGᕼTᔕ ᖴᖇOᗰ TᕼE GᖇEᗩT ᗯᕼITE ᑎOᖇTᕼ. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:PUNISHMENT PARK (1971) -- second screening added!
DESCRIPTION:RESERVE TICKETS – 5 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve tickets – 7:30 pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPUNISHMENT PARK is screening twice\, at 5 pm and 7:30 pm. Both screenings are free. All 5 pm tickets have been reserved. A waitlist will open at 4:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\nIn homage to Renee Nicole Good\, an unarmed mother gunned down by an ICE agent in her own car\, and in recognition of the widespread crackdown on protest by the US government\, including ICE’s teargassing of students at Minneapolis’s Roosevelt High School the same day Good was killed\, Arkadin would like to offer Sunday’s screening of PUNISHMENT PARK for free to all. \n\n\n\nThis film\, about the criminalization of dissent and the violent lengths the US state will go to protect its own racist\, imperialist\, anti-woman power structure\, could not be more timely. \n\n\n\nPUNISHMENT PARK is legendary for provoking intense reactions from audiences\, and we hope this screening can foster a vigorous discussion within our own community about the crisis our country faces and the path forward. \n\n\n\nWe also encourage you to make a donation to the family of Renee Good. \n\n\n\n\n“Is this the most powerful protest film ever made? Raw\, bracing\, visceral and confrontational…feels as vital today as it did back in 1971” – Little White Lies \n\n\n\nOn October 30\, 2025\, one day after his 90th birthday\, legendary British filmmaker Peter Watkins ascended to that great commune in the sky\, leaving behind an uncompromising legacy of socially engaged\, politically radical\, and formally daring cinema that still stands as a challenge to the narcotizing clichés of mainstream filmmaking. We salute Watkins’ life and work with a screening of one of his most blistering and controversial films\, PUNISHMENT PARK\, now celebrating its 60th anniversary. Set in an alternate version of 1970 in which president Richard Nixon has invoked the McCarran Act to crack down on anti-war protesters\, the film imagines a tribunal in which hippies\, Black radicals\, feminists\, and communists are put on trial for subversion. Once convicted\, they’re offered the chance to serve a three-day sentence in “Punishment Park\,” a forbidding patch of the Mojave Desert where they’ll be hunted by police officers and National Guardsmen in a deadly live training exercise. If they survive\, they earn their freedom. But will anyone make it out alive? In this age of ICE raids\, Trumpian fascism\, and hostility to dissent\, PUNISHMENT PARK is absolutely essential viewing. \n\n\n\nLOST IN THE ARTHOUSE is a monthly series hosted by Arkadin co-owner Keith Watson that takes you to hidden corners of filmdom far from Hollywood. From must-see classics to obscurities waiting to be discovered\, these films stand at cinema’s bleeding edge. SUMMARY:Breakdance Battle Comedy MISMATCHED COUPLES presented by St. Louis Video Society
DESCRIPTION:SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY digs deep in its extensive archives to present the weirdest\, wildest\, most incredible VHS obscurities. Always free\, always presented by Video Society archivist James Milam! \n\n\n\nSTLVS PRESENTS martial arts legends Donnie Yen and Yuen Woo-Ping in a decidedly different kung fu context with MISMATCHED COUPLES on Monday\, January 12th! Though these two are most known for kicking asses in films like HERO\, IP MAN\, IRON MONKEY\, and SNAKE IN EAGLE’S SHADOW (to name a few) this film is an absolutely freaky\, comedy classic that focuses on competitive breakdancing. That’s right…Donnie’s character Eddie is a breakdance battler and is hopelessly lost in love. Yuen\, in a slapstick supporting role as Mini\, causes serious problems wherever he goes… It’s a surprisingly funny and frantic experience\, and a film that hasn’t really been properly released in the United States. From Tsui Hark’s Cinema City production company\, MISMATCHED COUPLES is a fresh and funky start to your New Year! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS (1927) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\n“Murnau’s silent masterpiece contains some of the most glorious visual set-pieces in the history of cinema.” – Chicago Tribune \n\n\n\nOften considered one of the greatest films ever made—it came in at #11 in the most recent edition of Sight & Sound‘s prestigious poll of film critics—SUNRISE is an enduring testament to the emotive power of cinema. Telling the simple\, yet powerful\, tale of a farmer (George O’Brien)\, bored with country life\, who’s seduced by a city gal (Margaret Livingston) into killing his wife (Janet Gaynor)\, only for the married couple to rediscover their love for each other. Directed by German Expressionist master F.W. Murnau\, then working in the United States\, the film is bursting with grand emotion\, given life by a roving camera that seems to fly through the air. SUNRISE won an Oscar for Unique and Artistic Picture at the very first Academy Awards (a kind of joint Best Picture prize it shared with Wings) and also nabbed a statue for its star Janet Gaynor (an award that was also for her work in two other films; things were more complicated back then). As Roger Ebert wrote in his appreciation of Murnau’s film\, “silent films had a language of their own; they aimed for the emotions\, not the mind\, and the best of them wanted to be\, not a story\, but an experience.” With its great beauty and depth of feeling\, SUNRISE is not just an experience\, but potentially a life-changing one. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:KIDS IN THE HALL: BRAIN CANDY (1996) w/ "Kids in the Hall" pre-show @ 6 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A deeply hilarious film…This satire of the pharmaceutical industry goes down like a miracle drug. It is as intensely weird and dark as it is full-throated funny.” – The Globe and Mail \n\n\n\nForget SNL\, Lorne Michaels’ greatest gift to comedy will always be those crazy crossdressing Canucks: Dave Foley\, Bruce McCulloch\, Kevin McDonald\, Mark McKinney\, and Scott Thompson. Or as they’re collectively known\, The Kids in the Hall. Having revolutionized sketch comedy by wedding bizarrely memorable characters with Pythonesque surrealism and a punk-rock attitude\, the Kids turned their hand to the big screen as only they could: By crafting a deeply strange\, unsettlingly dark film about depression and pharmaceutical industry malfeasance that features gags about cancer\, pornography\, and suicide. (The film follows the hilarious fallout from the invention of Gleemonex\, a happiness drug that just so happens to put users into comas.) The result was a critical and commercial flop that put the final nail in the troupe’s already well-secured coffin. But in this age of mass chemical dependency\, the Kids’ one-and-only cinematic effort has aged like fine Prozac. Silly\, absurd\, and genuinely daring in way few comedy films are\, BRAIN CANDY is the perfect prescription for the winter blues. \n\n\n\nPlus\, starting at 6 pm\, we’ll have a pre-show featuring some of the best clips from the legendary original Kids in the Hall sketch show! \n\n\n\nTᕼIᔕ ᖴIᒪᗰ Iᔕ ᔕᑕᖇEEᑎIᑎG ᗩᔕ ᑭᗩᖇT Oᖴ ᗩᖇKᗩᗪIᑎ’ᔕ ᗯEIᖇᗪ ᑕᗩᑎᗩᗪᗩ ᔕEᖇIEᔕ\, ᖴEᗩTᑌᖇIᑎG OᖴᖴᗷEᗩT\, ᗰᗩᑭᒪE-ᗪᖇEᑎᑕᕼEᗪ ᗪEᒪIGᕼTᔕ ᖴᖇOᗰ TᕼE GᖇEᗩT ᗯᕼITE ᑎOᖇTᕼ. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:SKINAMARINK (2022) -- Friday Night WTF!
\n\n\n\n“A vessel for the brain’s most frightening hallucinations… it[‘s] one unsettling experience.” – B-Sides & Ballads \n\n\n\nWhat is SKINAMARINK? It can’t be described\, it must be experienced. And the only way to truly immerse yourself in its weird\, deeply creepy atmosphere is to see it in a pitch-black movie theater where director Kyle Edward Ball’s expertly crafted haunting\, experimental visual textures and haunting sound design can burrow their way deep into your soul. Following two children who wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished\, the film is\, depending on who you ask\, incredibly boring or gut-wrenchingly terrifying. But there’s no denying one thing: it’s one of the strangest\, most original horror films of our time. Who could have guessed that this unsettling little slice of ambient horror\, made for $15\,000 and inspired by experimental filmmakers like Michael Snow and Chantal Akerman\, could somehow climb its way into our collective unconscious. DESCRIPTION:RESERVE SEATS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery January\, new batches of old books\, music\, and films enter the public domain\, which makes them free for distribution and reimagining. To celebrate films from 1930 becoming available\, WashU is proud to present a FREE screening of Lon Chaney’s only talkie\, The Unholy Three\, on 16mm! \n\n\n\n“The finest thing about this picture is that it discloses Lon Chaney’s natural voice just exactly as it should be—deep\, vibrant\, and perfectly poised.” – Photoplay \n\n\n\nA sound remake of the Tod Browning 1925 silent version\, Chaney reprises his role as the villainous Echo\, ventriloquist leader of a criminal gang of sideshow performers (a Tod Browning set up if ever one existed). Harry Earles also returns as a belligerent co-conspirator. Their con involves a bunch of disguises and a pet shop and… a gorilla (man in a suit)? It’s a bit convoluted and melodramatic\, but a fun Pre-Code crime spree nonetheless! For his only speaking role\, MGM marketed the star as “the Man of a Thousand Voices.” Chaney also signed a sworn affidavit attesting that all the voices used in the film for his various disguise are his. \n\n\n\nThis screening is free\, but we recommend reserving tickets in advance to ensure a seat. \n\n\n\nPrint courtesy of Indiana University’s Lilly Library’s David Bradley Collection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:HE NEVER DIES: Queer Experimental Shorts by Kalil Haddad w/ virtual filmmaker Q&A
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Kalil Haddad has spent years transforming archives of pleasure into mosaics of pain. The filmmaker’s best-known works—strung together from repurposed fragments of adult films and skin mags—can be tenuously characterized as found-footage horror…this provocative filmmaker shrewdly retools iconographies of desire into sites of doom and death.” – Ultra Dogme \n\n\n\nThe work of Kalil Haddad is radical in form and provocation. He distorts lo-fi footage to flesh out material analyses of queer subjectivities. His work blends archival\, experimental\, documentary\, and narrative elements that allow for a making and remaking of archival text. Seeking history as a ruin of resources\, he unveils materialist truths concerning the connection between sexuality\, gender\, race\, and class exploitation. Haddad revels in the radical possibilities of grainy schlock and lifts untold stories from the conditions of our desires. \n\n\n\nHe Never Dies presents five of Haddad’s recent shorts:  My Secret Boyfriend Died in a Mass Shooting (2025)\, His Smell (2023) The Boy Was Found Unharmed (2024) The Taking of Jordan (All American Boy) (2022) and Victim of Circumstance (2024). Stitching together personal footage and gay pornography\, scanned celluloid unravels as Haddad shifts and destroys the digital objects of gay desire. Unveiling the labor conditions of commercialized gay sex\, Haddad questions and interrogates the lives of those being exploited for the eyes of a consumptive audience. Each film follows a boy\, often a porn star and always one to be desired. Haddad writes narratives onto these archetypal studs leading down fictionalized paths of murder\, abuse\, premature death\, and unrequited lust. Lending narrative to archival footage\, Haddad reinterprets sexual interactions by placing the viewer into the more violent\, romantic\, and emotional tenants of the subject’s lives. \n\n\n\nThe program begins with Vampires Drink Blood…I Drink Sorrow (2021) and The Beautiful Room is Empty (2020)\, which establishes Haddad within a queer Palestinian lineage and frames the attitude and approach he takes with his later work. Technology’s progression has created the conditions for the rapid sharing\, interpretation\, breaking down\, and reintroduction of information to the public. Haddad’s filmmaking becomes a tool for building class consciousness as it pulls images from a radical queer history and reinterprets them in a new generational context. Sex workers have always been at the front line of the queer vanguard. Centering his story alongside broke fags\, Haddad makes a remarkable statement about the political potential of experimental cinema. (Text from Los Angeles Film Forum\, partially adapted from “The Taking Of Jordan (All American Boy)” by Wilde Davis\, published in Cinema Year Zero.) \n\n\n\nA virtual Q&A with Kalil Haddad will follow the program. \n\n\n\nKalil Haddad is an experimental filmmaker based in Toronto. He has written\, directed\, and edited over a dozen short films including: The Beautiful Room is Empty (2020)\, The Taking of Jordan (2022)\, His Smell (2023)\, and Victim of Circumstance (2024). His work has screened at Festival du Nouveau Cinema\, Images Festival\, Indie Memphis\, Kasseler Dokfest\, London Short Film Festival\, and the Institute of Contemporary Arts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:CURSE OF THE DEMON (a.k.a. Night of the Demon\, 1957) -- 𝔉𝔬𝔩𝔨 ℌ𝔬𝔯𝔯𝔬𝔯 𝔄𝔯𝔬𝔲𝔫𝔡 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔚𝔬𝔯𝔩𝔡
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A beguiling and enveloping tale of the power of the occult and the susceptibility of the human mind to suggestion.” – Backseat Mafia \n\n\n\nNo director before or since Jacques Tourneur has so expertly tapped into the eerie power of suggestion. With subtle gestures and simple images\, the horror maestro evokes unseen forces of unfathomable evil. And nowhere is Tourneur’s mastery of creeping terror on fuller display than in his late-period masterpiece\, Night of the Demon. Released in the US\, as CURSE OF THE DEMON\, the film tells the tale of American professor John Holden\, who arrives in London for a conference on parapsychology only to discover that the colleague he was supposed to meet has been killed in a freak accident the day before. Investigating the death\, Holden stumbles upon a devil-worshipping cult that may shake his faith in science. Tourneur never wanted to show the monster at the film’s heart\, and while its B-movie campiness is undeniable\, it’s also pretty f’ing cool too. Ultimately\, Night of the Demon offers the best of both worlds: it’s a subtle\, expertly crafted tale of suspense and a badass creature feature all for the price of one! \n\n\n\nEach month\, Arkadin presents a selection of FOLK HORROR AROUND THE WORLD\, creepy folktales from all corner of the globe to give you the Sunday scaries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Denis Villeneuve's ENEMY (2013)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Denis Villeneuve’s shared dream of a film takes the simple premise of a man glimpsing his doppelganger while watching a movie and mines every bit of tension and oddity from it — there’s hardly a scene that doesn’t exude menace.” – Village Voice \n\n\n\nStylish and sinister\, Dune director Denis Villeneuve’s pulsating psychological thriller ENEMY is undoubtedly the French-Canadian auteur’s most daring and underseen work. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers one of the finest performances of his career in a dual role\, as listless history professor Adam Bell and the man’s doppelganger\, a low-rent actor whom Adam first spots in the background of a movie\, playing a bellhop. Thus kicks off an intensely off-kilter tale of suspense laden with surreal images\, Lynchian undertones\, and creeping dread\, all building to a shocking final image that has justifiably been suggested to be “the scariest ending of any film ever made” (David Ehrlich\, Film.com). \n\n\n\nTᕼIᔕ ᖴIᒪᗰ Iᔕ ᔕᑕᖇEEᑎIᑎG ᗩᔕ ᑭᗩᖇT Oᖴ ᗩᖇKᗩᗪIᑎ’ᔕ ᗯEIᖇᗪ ᑕᗩᑎᗩᗪᗩ ᔕEᖇIEᔕ\, ᖴEᗩTᑌᖇIᑎG OᖴᖴᗷEᗩT\, ᗰᗩᑭᒪE-ᗪᖇEᑎᑕᕼEᗪ ᗪEᒪIGᕼTᔕ ᖴᖇOᗰ TᕼE GᖇEᗩT ᗯᕼITE ᑎOᖇTᕼ. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:PONTYPOOL (2008)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Fiercely intelligent and original…Riddled with nail-biting tension and scenes that are quite simply scary as hell.” – Dread Central \n\n\n\nDirected by veteran cult Canadian filmmaker Bruce McDonald (Hard Core Logo)\, PONTYPOOL arrived at a moment of zombie-film oversaturation and managed to prove there was still plenty of life left in this (un)dead genre. How? Not with big-budget effects or gimmicky thrills\, but by hitting on the terrifying idea of a virus that can only be stopped by willfully and knowingly descending into incoherent madness. When the hosts of a small-time morning radio show are forced to interpret and report the incoming news of a zombie apocalypse outside\, PONTYPOOL reveals that the plague is spread through language itself\, and only by completely ceasing to make sense of or comprehend one another can humanity possibly survive. Simultaneously produced as a radio play\, this minimalist\, mostly gore-less thriller never leaves the confines of the radio station\, yet it remains one of the smartest\, most original horror films of the 21st century. It’s no wonder Consequence of Sound dubbed it one of the 100 scariest movies of all time. \n\n\n\nTᕼIᔕ ᖴIᒪᗰ Iᔕ ᔕᑕᖇEEᑎIᑎG ᗩᔕ ᑭᗩᖇT Oᖴ ᗩᖇKᗩᗪIᑎ’ᔕ ᗯEIᖇᗪ ᑕᗩᑎᗩᗪᗩ ᔕEᖇIEᔕ\, ᖴEᗩTᑌᖇIᑎG OᖴᖴᗷEᗩT\, ᗰᗩᑭᒪE-ᗪᖇEᑎᑕᕼEᗪ ᗪEᒪIGᕼTᔕ ᖴᖇOᗰ TᕼE GᖇEᗩT ᗯᕼITE ᑎOᖇTᕼ. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Surreal cult comedy THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD (2003)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Hilariously odd and prodigiously inventive\, it springs from the eccentric mind of Guy Maddin\, whose delirious visions have earned this singular Canadian filmmaker an international cult following.” – Newsweek \n\n\n\nOnly the mind of Guy Maddin could conjure up THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD\, in which a double-amputee beer baroness who wears aquarium legs filled with ale (Isabella Rossellini) invites musicians of all nations to compete in a grand competition to find the world’s most sorrowful tune. And if all that weren’t weird enough for you\, the film also packs in sleepwalkers\, nymphomaniacs\, a talking tapeworm\, and hockey teams who break into spontaneous serenades. The only thing zanier than the plot is Maddin’s style\, a delirious jumble of silent-film Expressionism\, pre-Code-era camp\, and a surreally comic tone all Maddin’s own. Kids in the Hall star Mark McKinney is hilarious as the fast-talking swindler representing America\, while Isabella Rossellini is truly delicious as the “Beer Queen of the Prairie.” Criminally underseen since it’s initial release\, THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD is a true gem for lovers of the wonderfully outlandish and hilariously bizarre. \n\n\n\nTᕼIᔕ ᖴIᒪᗰ Iᔕ ᔕᑕᖇEEᑎIᑎG ᗩᔕ ᑭᗩᖇT Oᖴ ᗩᖇKᗩᗪIᑎ’ᔕ ᗯEIᖇᗪ ᑕᗩᑎᗩᗪᗩ ᔕEᖇIEᔕ\, ᖴEᗩTᑌᖇIᑎG OᖴᖴᗷEᗩT\, ᗰᗩᑭᒪE-ᗪᖇEᑎᑕᕼEᗪ ᗪEᒪIGᕼTᔕ ᖴᖇOᗰ TᕼE GᖇEᗩT ᗯᕼITE ᑎOᖇTᕼ. SUMMARY:STRANGE BREW (1983) w/ SCTV pre-show @ 6 pm
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“ONE OF THE BEST CANADIAN COMEDIES OF ALL TIME! As genuine in its affection for its working-class dimwits as it is ambitious in its cinematic surrealism\, Strange Brew leaves you with the best kind of hangover.” – The Globe and Mail \n\n\n\nBefore “Wayne’s World” there was “Great White North” with Bob and Doug McKenzie. A public access parody from legendary sketch comedy show SCTV\, the wildly popular recurring sketch featured Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as the lovably dopey\, Molson-swilling McKenzie brothers\, drunkenly riffing on all manner of Canadiana. The sketch spawned a best-selling album and STRANGE BREW\, a feature-length comedy that maintains a rabid cult following thanks to its smart-dumb improv antics\, outlandish sci-fi B-movie tone\, and a bizarre plot inspired by\, of all things\, Hamlet. Written and directed by Moranis and Thomas\, STRANGE BREW features an evil brewmeister played by Max Von Sydow\, mind-controlled hockey-playing stormtroopers\, and a flying wiener dog named Hosehead. Silly\, surreal\, and sweet-natured\, STRANGE BREW has lost none of its charm over the decades. \n\n\n\nPlus\, come out early for an SCTV pre-show starting at 6 pm! \n\n\n\nTᕼIᔕ ᖴIᒪᗰ Iᔕ ᔕᑕᖇEEᑎIᑎG ᗩᔕ ᑭᗩᖇT Oᖴ ᗩᖇKᗩᗪIᑎ’ᔕ ᗯEIᖇᗪ ᑕᗩᑎᗩᗪᗩ ᔕEᖇIEᔕ\, ᖴEᗩTᑌᖇIᑎG OᖴᖴᗷEᗩT\, ᗰᗩᑭᒪE-ᗪᖇEᑎᑕᕼEᗪ ᗪEᒪIGᕼTᔕ ᖴᖇOᗰ TᕼE GᖇEᗩT ᗯᕼITE ᑎOᖇTᕼ. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person.
