SUMMARY:THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955) presented by Dark Dream Cinema -- Sold Out!
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. A WAITLIST WILL OPEN IN THE LOBBY 30 MINUTES BEFORE START TIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\n“Many great movies are realistic\, but The Night of the Hunter is an expressionistic oddity\, telling its chilling story through visual fantasy.” Roger Ebert \n\n\n\nJohn and Pearl have a secret\, and the Rev. Harry Powell will stop at nothing to find out what it is. From gliding through brackish backwaters to taking shelter in rural safe havens\, these two lost lambs venture far and wide to escape the gaze of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. \n\n\n\nThe sole entry in Charles Laughton’s directorial career\, this singular classic provided Robert Mitchum with his defining role and inspired homages in everything from Do the Right Thing to The Simpsons. The crown jewel of American gothic cinema\, The Night of the Hunter has earned suitable acclaim as one of the most lush\, dreamlike\, and visually poetic films ever made. Join us for an evening of iconic imagery you won’t soon forget. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:EASY RIDER (1969) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nIn Easy Rider\, two bikers named Wyatt “Captain America” (Peter Fonda) & Billy (Dennis Hopper) head from California to New Orleansfor the Mardi Gras festival after scoring a large sum of money smuggling cocaine from Mexico. Their cross-country motorcycle quest finds them searching for the true meaning of freedom in the heart of America in the late 1960s. The film was written by Peter Fonda\, Dennis Hopper and Terry Southern\, and directed by Dennis Hopper. Easy Rider co-stars Jack Nicholson who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award. Nicholson now credits his standout performance in the film for making him a bona fide movie star.  \n\n\n\nEasy Rider is largely responsible for ushering in the New Hollywood movement of the late ’60s through the ’70s in America. Independently produced with a paltry budget of $400\,000\, the film returned a staggering $60 million at the box office\, proving to the major Hollywood studios that low-budget films with young directors and counterculture ideals could yield a major return on investment. Now the film stands as an iconic generational touchstone as well as a snapshot into the late ’60s hippie movement\, motorcycle clubs\, drug culture and communal lifestyles. In 1998\, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant.” \n\n\n\n“Easy Rider is the single greatest example of counterculture cinema.” – Quentin Tarantino \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. SUMMARY:$3 MYSTERY MOVIE: A Weird\, Wild\, Totally Offbeat Road Movie
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the last Monday of every month\, Arkadin chooses an underseen deep cut to inflict upon an unwitting audience. Though the genre and tone may change\, the price always remains the same: three measly bucks. You can’t afford not to get yourself a ticket! \n\n\n\nOur June Mystery Movie is a highly unusual yet remarkably entertaining journey into the festering underbelly of the American dream. Imagine Pee-wee’s Big Adventure if it were directed by David Lynch and…well… maybe that’s not exactly what this is\, but it’s as close as one can come to describing this truly singular offbeat gem\, a forgotten mid-budget indie road movie with an incredibly stacked cast. Laden with absurdist humor\, surrealistic touches\, and a basic premise that must be seen to be believed\, this should-be cult classic will leave you wondering\, “Who exactly were they making this movie for?” The answer: weirdos like you and me. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:PONYBOI (2024) -- "a first for intersex representation onscreen"
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The thing you need to know about Ponyboi is that it’s so fucking fun. It’s true writer and star River Gallo has crafted a movie with intersex representation unlike anything we’ve seen before… But\, my God\, is this film FUN… Ponyboi is a queer cinema genre pastiche that understands a movie can be artful\, emotional\, and incredibly entertaining.” – Autostraddle \n\n\n\nArkadin is thrilled to present this brand-new release as part of its 2025 Pride program! Unfolding over the course of Valentine’s Day in New Jersey\, PONYBOI is a neon-drenched neo-noir set in the Motorola Razr-flipping days of the early ’00s New Jersey. River Gallo stars as Ponyboi\, a young intersex sex worker on the run from the mob after a drug deal goes sideways\, forcing him to confront his past. Co-written by Gallo\, who adapted their own short film\, PONYBOI is a deeply personal work for Gallo and and a groundbreaking work of intersex representation. Co-starring Dylan O’Brien as Ponyboi’s goofball pimp Vinny and Victoria Pedretti as Vinny’s pregnant girlfriend\, PONYBOI is a showcase for Gallo’s electrifying lead performance. But it’s also a thrilling genre exercise peppered with dark humor\, fantasy\, and a deeply felt sense of time and place. \n\n\n\n\n“A first for intersex representation onscreen” – Pajiba \n\n\n\n“A sexy\, sweaty fever dream” – The Hollywood Reporter \n\n\n\n“One hell of a wild\, intense ride through New Jersey’s underbelly” – Screen Zealots \n\n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s month-long celebration of PRIDE\, showcasing a wide array of queer classics\, cult favorites\, and underseen gems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. Initially dismissed by the critics as a misbegotten attempt to titillate a horny young male audience\, this piece of pure pop-art fizz is in fact a by-lesbians-for-lesbians delight that\, some 20 years after initial release\, has found its audience. Written and directed by Angela Robinson\, a rare Black queen woman working (however uneasily) within the Hollywood system\, D.E.B.S. is a high-spirited spy comedy about a group of women recruited by a secret test embedded within the SAT to a top-secret espionage school run by the federal government. Hilarious complications ensue when one of the newest recruits\, Amy (Sara Foster)\, falls in love with the agency’s highly alluring top villain Lucy (Jordana Brewster). A bona fide queer cult classic\, D.E.B.S. holds the worthy distinction of enjoying one of the highest ratings rises on cinephile social media site Letterboxd! The people have spoken: SEE D.E.B.S. NOW! \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s month-long celebration of PRIDE\, showcasing a wide array of queer classics\, cult favorites\, and underseen gems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Wong Kar-Wai's HAPPY TOGETHER (1997)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME MOVIE… Happy Together is a singular film\, and there will never be another queer film like it. But on the other hand\, when you consider the grander history of queer cinema\, and that we are lucky enough to live when it was made — and\, now\, see the ways in which it paved the road for other LGBTQ+ movies — there’s nothing more beautiful.” – The Asian Cut \n\n\n\nOne of the most searing romances of the 1990s\, Wong Kar Wai’s emotionally raw\, lushly stylized portrait of a relationship in breakdown casts Hong Kong superstars Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung as a couple traveling through Argentina and locked in a turbulent cycle of infatuation and destructive jealousy as they break up\, make up\, and fall apart again and again. Setting out to depict the dynamics of a queer relationship with empathy and complexity on the cusp of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong—when the country’s LGBT community suddenly faced an uncertain future—Wong crafts a feverish look at the life cycle of a love affair that’s by turns devastating and deliriously romantic. Shot by ace cinematographer Christopher Doyle in both luminous monochrome and luscious saturated color\, Happy Together is an intoxicating exploration of displacement and desire that swoons with the ache and exhilaration of love at its heart-tearing extremes. The fabulous Captain Tracy Daniels would! Disguised as show girls from Earth\, Daniels and her fierce space crew travel to the “babes-only world” of VEGAS IN SPACE. Once there\, they must Dance! Dance! With tongue planted firmly in cheek and outfits that would make RuPaul jealous\, these cross-dressing divas are more fabulous than Julie Newmar\, and shine brighter than a supernova. One of the first truly queer midnight movies\, VEGAS IN SPACE was a labor of love nearly a decade in the making for co-writer/director Phillip R. Ford and writer Doris Fish\, a legendary Australian-American drag performer who tragically died of AIDS before the film’s release. SUMMARY:Groundbreaking Drag Documentary THE QUEEN (1968) w/ intro by STL drag leaders!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The mother of all drag documentaries…a small movie with a big heart!” – The New York Times \n\n\n\nMore than 40 years before RuPaul’s Drag Race\, this groundbreaking documentary about the 1967 Miss All-American Camp Beauty Pageant introduced audiences to the world of competitive drag. The film takes us backstage to kiki with the contestants as they rehearse\, throw shade\, and transform into their drag personas in the lead-up to the big event. Organized by LGBTQ icon and activist Flawless Sabrina\, the competition boasted a star-studded panel of judges including Andy Warhol\, Larry Rivers\, and Terry Southern. But perhaps most memorable is an epic diatribe calling out the pageant’s bias delivered by Crystal LaBeija\, who would go on to form the influential House of LaBeija\, heavily featured in Paris Is Burning (1990). A vibrant piece of queer history\, The Queen can now be seen in full resplendence thanks to a new restoration from the original camera negative. \n\n\n\nThis screening will be introduced by St. Louis drag leaders\, Devion Mornetts and Nick Fruend. \n\n\n\nDEVION MORNETTS has over 25 years in the field of female impersonation. She’s archived titles such as Miss Missouri USofA\, Miss Show Me States UsofA\, and Miss Springfield America. She has served as show director at some of the most iconic show bars in Missouri. She currently resides in St. Louis and is a Belle of The Bevo as well as the mentor and host for Royal Rumble\, a drag race style talent completion every third Thursday of the month at The Little Bevo. \n\n\n\nNICK FRUEND (a.k.a. Janessa Highland) has been performing for 15 years. Janessa has captured titles such as Miss Gay Missouri America where she went on to place 4th of 43 contestants at Miss Gay America in 2019. She is also a former National title holder reigning as Miss Cosmopolitan 2021. She is a former Miss St. Louis America\, Missouri All American Goddess and Miss Show Me States USofA. She now owns and operates The Little Bevo\, an event space which offers weekly drag shows and a monthly themed drag brunch in addition to hosting weddings and private events \n\n\n\nThis film is screening as part of Arkadin’s month-long celebration of PRIDE\, showcasing a wide array of queer classics\, cult favorites\, and underseen gems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:DICKS: THE MUSICAL (2023) -- outdoor screening!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Incredibly raunchy\, profane\, and so knowingly over the top…It’s truly inspired!” – Filmweek \n\n\n\nCrude\, outlandish\, and completely bonkers\, DICKS: THE MUSICAL tells the story of two self-obsessed businessmen who\, after discovering they’re long-lost identical twins (Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson\, who look nothing alike) come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents — all through musical numbers too profane and insane to recount here. Think of it as extremely Freaky Friday. With a cast that includes Megan Mullaly\, Nathan Lane\, Megan Thee Stallion\, and Bowen Yang\, DICKS is\, depending on who you ask\, a modern cult classic that channels the spirit of John Waters or the most offensive film ever made. You be the judge! \n\n\n\nThis film is screening outdoors in our backlot theater! We strongly recommend you bring your own chair as seating is limited. SUMMARY:Queer Cinema Classic PINK NARCISSUS (1971) -- New 4K Restoration!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Pink Narcissus transcends any niche descriptor that applies—queer\, camp\, avant-garde\, softcore\, documentary expressionism—and plunges into the deep end of consciousness-annihilating erotic desire.” – Slant Magazine \n\n\n\n“As beautiful and timeless as The Wizard of Oz” according to no less an authority on queer cinema than John Waters\, PINK NARCISSUS is a dream-like erotic fantasy about a handsome\, self-involved\, brooding young man who escapes the realities of his street life through a series of fantasies of incredible beauty. Obsessed with his own perfection\, he lives in a dreamworld of fantastic colors\, magnificent music\, elaborate costumes and strikingly handsome males. In a series of eye-popping sequences he imagines himself as a roman slave chosen by the emperor\, as a triumphant matador vanquishing the bull (who is really a black leather clad cyclist)\, an innocent wood nymph gamboling in the woods\, a diaphanously dressed harem boy in the tent of the sheik. He imagines his room as an exquisite jewel-encrusted retreat. But reality constantly intrudes through the depraved lives of the other street people\, through the harsh and ugly sounds outside and through the visits of his “johns”. His narcissistic enchantment with his own beauty and lifestyle is marred by one great fear – aging and loss of his youth and good looks. And\, in a final terrible glimpse of reality\, the jaded “john” becomes himself. \n\n\n\nLong credited only to “Anonymous\,” PINK NARCISSUS was only acknowledged by its true maker\, James Bidgood\, twenty years after its original release. SUMMARY:F.W. Murnau's THE LAST LAUGH (1924) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\nOne of the crowning achievements of the German expressionist movement\, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau’s The Last Laugh (Der letzte Mann) stars Emil Jannings stars as an aging doorman whose happiness crumbles when he is relieved of the duties and uniform which had for years been the foundation of his happiness and pride. Told almost completely without intertitles\, the film is noted for cinematographer Karl Freund’s sinuously moving camera. Through Jannings’s colossal performance The Last Laugh becomes more than the plight of a single doorman\, but a mournful dramatization of the frustration and anguish of the universal working class. \n\n\n\n“This 1924 silent masterpiece can pierce a hardened heart” – Josh Larsen \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:HOLY TRINITY (2019) w/ virtual Q&A with filmmaker Glamhag!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A psychedelic candy colored acid trip of a movie\, Holy Trinity isn’t like anything else you’ve ever seen.” – Bay Area Reporter \n\n\n\nNamed one of IndieWire‘s “Queer Films Not to Be Missed\,” HOLY TRINITY is a funky\, day-glo exploration of sexuality and gender nonconformity and a perfect underseen gem of contemporary queer cinema for PRIDE! \n\n\n\nAfter an incident huffing her drug of choice—a mysterious aerosol can from the ubiquitous Glamhag brand— Trinity finds herself with a newfound gift for speaking to the dead. Confused and more than a little curious about this strange turn of events\, Trinity seeks the counsel of a colorful cast of characters\, from priests and drag queens to a witch and more\, all of whom teach her their unique spiritual practices. As she navigates life with this unexpected talent (and continues to huff that mysterious drug)\, Trinity is tossed between hallucination and reality more and more frequently\, developing a growing confidence in her strange new ability and learning to harness it in surprising ways. But with any great power comes great responsibility\, and soon Trinity has to decide what’s more important: her community and personal relationships or the allure of influence and fame. \n\n\n\nBoasting an inclusive cast (including Theo Germaine\, Sarah Sherman\, Alex Grelle & Dorian Electra)  and crew of diverse communities often neglected in mainstream cinema and approaching typically taboo subjects with verve and acceptance\, HOLY TRINITY is a sometimes raunchy\, always entertaining celebration of all that makes us different. In their feature film debut\, writer\, director and star Glamhag presents a vibrant and vivid portrait of friendship\, spirituality and community\, with more than a little glam sprinkled in along the way. \n\n\n\nAfter the film\, Glamhag will join us via Zoom for a virtual Q&A! SUMMARY:Erotic Lesbian BDSM Romance THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY (2014)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“ONE OF THE BEST FILMS OF THE 2010s… Without question\, the most moving film ever made about being a power bottom. This is the rare love story about compatibility and calibration\, as two adults reestablish the terms of their partnership to find a new normal.” – The AV Club \n\n\n\nSex\, bondage\, and butterflies: two women explore the extremes of carnal desire in this kinky\, deliciously twisted tale of erotic obsession. In a crumbling European estate\, butterfly researcher Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen) and her lover Evelyn (Chiara D’Anna) repeatedly enact a sadomasochistic role-playing game\, with Cynthia as the stern mistress and Evelyn her subservient slave. But as the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur\, and Cynthia grows increasingly uneasy with Evelyn’s insatiable appetite for punishment\, their relationship is pushed to the limit. Dripping with dreamlike imagery\, giallo and Jess Franco flourishes\, Gothic atmosphere\, and a lush chamber pop score by Cat’s Eyes\, this critically-acclaimed\, darkly comic erotic fantasia is a seductive feast for the senses! \n\n\n\n\n“An exquisite hothouse flower of high-toned eroticism” – The New York Times \n\n\n\n“Visually ravishing\, emotionally wise\, and kinky as a coiled rope…a delight.” – The Hollywood Reporter \n\n\n\n“This isn’t merely film of the year… it’s sure to be one of the films of the decade” – L.A. Weekly \n\n\n\n\nThere are absolutely NO MEN in The Duke of Burgundy\, which also happens to be the case for the film that precedes it\, Mädchen in Uniform! SUMMARY:MÄDCHEN IN UNIFORM (1931) -- an anti-fascist landmark of lesbian cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“In equal parts a landmark of queer cinema\, a groundbreaking lesbian love story\, and a cogent antifascist statement. Made by women who intimately understood and delighted in women\, Mädchen in Uniform is a reminder\, now as ever\, that if enough of us stand up for each other\, we can all be safe\, together.” – Amanda Lee Koe \n\n\n\nA vital landmark in the history of queer cinema\, Mädchen in Uniform (a.k.a. Girls in Uniform) is a remarkably brave and honest film about nascent love between women at a boarding school for girls. Vulnerable and quiet\, Manuela von Meinhardis (Hertha Thiele) struggles to adjust to the stern discipline of the heavily-regimented institution. In time\, she gains confidence through a friendship with one of her teachers (Dorothea Wieck). But no relationship between women\, no matter how chaste\, is to be permitted\, and under the constant threat of punishment or expulsion\, Manuela desperately tries to keep hope and love alive. Beyond its acclaim as a groundbreaking work in LGBTQ culture\, Mädchen in Uniform has also been hailed as a timeless fable of the struggle of the innocent against the totalitarian forces of oppression—especially poignant since it was produced in Germany amidst the rise of the Nazi Party. \n\n\n\nThere are absolutely NO MEN in Mädchen in Uniform\, which also happens to be the case for the film that follows it\, The Duke of Burgundy! SUMMARY:HAIRSPRAY (2007) -- moved indoors due to weather!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“This film leaps at you with such joy and vigour and generosity you cannot reject it.” – The Spectator \n\n\n\nIt’s rare that a movie captures the intensity and excitement of a live Broadway musical production while appealing to a broader movie-going audience\, but the 2007 Hairspray is an energetic\, powerfully moving film that does just that. A remake of John Waters’ 1988 cult classic\, this film adaptation of the 2002 Broadway musical has become a rightfully beloved modern classic\, serving up crowd-pleasing sing-along tunes while retaining Waters’ subversive wit. In 1960s Baltimore\, dance-loving teen Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) auditions for a spot on “The Corny Collins Show” and wins. She becomes an overnight celebrity\, a trendsetter in dance\, fun and fashion. SUMMARY:Prince's UNDER THE CHERRY MOON (1986) w/ intro by Arkadin co-owner Sarah Baraba
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re hosting a joint birthday party for Arkadin co-owner Sarah Baraba (born June 6\, 1987) and pop music icon Prince (born June 7\, 1958)! The night begins with a Happy Hour devoted to the Purple One\, then Sarah will introduce Prince’s brilliant directorial debut Under the Cherry Moon\, and we’ll wrap things up with karaoke in the theater! \n\n\n\nWhat better way to follow up the runaway box office success of Purple Rain — the film that cemented Prince’s status as a pop icon and helped sell a bajillion soundtrack albums — than with a frothy screwball tribute to pre-Code rom-coms set against the backdrop of the French Riviera? Oh and did I mention\, there are hardly any musical numbers? And it’s all in black-and-white? UNDER THE CHERRY MOON was\, understandably\, a tough sell to audiences expecting Purple Rain 2\, but the critical lambasting the film endured — it was dismissed as a misguided vanity project by a narcissistic wannabe and “awarded” five Razzies\, including Worst Picture — was completely unwarranted and smacks of out-of-touch fuddy-duddyism. \n\n\n\nBut the critics and the public had it all completely wrong\, as Arkadin co-owner Sarah Baraba will argue in her introduction! This free-wheeling goofball lark is\, in fact\, an underseen treasure\, a true auteurist work by one of pop music’s greatest geniuses that evokes the ribaldry of the pre-Code era with a devilishly subversive streak. Directed by and starring the Purple One himself\, UNDER THE CHERRY MOON co-stars Kristin Scott Thomas (in her screen debut) and Jerome Benton of The Time. Featuring gorgeous black-and-white cinematography by the legendary Michael Ballhaus\, a script written by pioneering No Wave filmmaker Becky Johnston\, and a soundtrack collaboration between Prince and composer Clare Fishcer\, UNDER THE CHERRY MOON is a cult classic waiting to be rediscovered. \n\n\n\n“Under the Cherry Moon is an inspired\, delightful piece of cinema—pure cloudcuckooland escapism\, a luxuriant\, swishy appropriation of Golden Age dreaminess with a dollop of wide-eyed 80s consumerist wonderment and mystical messianic streak\, and very much of a piece with Prince’s genius.” – BKMAG \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Double Feature -- ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932) + FREAKS (1932) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\nBody horror made a quantum leap in ’32\, with the twin releases of these two markedly different exploitation classics. In Island of Lost Souls\, Charles Laughton plays the sinister Dr. Moreau\, whose gene-splicing lab in the jungle spawns a new class of hybrids bent on revenge; meanwhile\, Tod Browning’s Freaks portrays the denizens of a traveling sideshow as they uncover a plot by the normies against one of their own. \n\n\n\nWhile each film covers different angles of the class struggle\, Freaks has earned particular notoriety for its casting of actual sideshow performers with genuine physical anomalies. Though intended as a tribute to the kind-hearted carny folk of his youth\, Browning’s masterpiece crossed a line that audiences couldn’t bear\, leading to mass panic at its initial screenings and effectively ending his career. Come see what all the fuss was about as we unveil them back to back\, in a double header that’ll scar you for life. \n\n\n\n“Cinema’s boldest statement on the dichotomy between outer appearance and inner life; no wonder the beauty-obsessed Hollywood studio system had no idea what to do with it. It’s one of the most powerful films ever made about the need for humanity and solidarity in the face of cruelty and oppression.” – Abhilash ‘NOx’ Baruah on Freaks \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Post-Apocalyptic Skateboard Rock Opera SHREDDER ORPHEUS (1990) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nShredder Orpheus (1989) is a low-budget reimagining of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice presented as a post-apocalyptic skateboard rock opera. Orpheus (played by director Robert McGinley) is a local rock star that must descend to the underworld on a skateboard-from-hell to rescue his kidnapped wife and stop Hades from broadcasting a hypnotic message from the Devil’s “Euthanasia TV Network” that could destroy the world. Shredder Orpheus also captures a rare acting performance by legendary spoken-word poet Steven Jesse Bernstein (known as Seattle’s Williams S. Burroughs) who narrates the story as well.  \n\n\n\nThe film was shot in Seattle\, Washington without obtaining permits for many of its locations. It had a one-night-only premiere at Seattle’s Neptune Theater on Halloween of 1989\, before it later gained a cult following for its limited VHS release. The film was rediscovered by the American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) and reissued on Blu-Ray in 2023 to modern audiences that embraced its weird amalgamation of influences from new-wave music videos\, Bones Brigade skate tapes\, and avant-garde art.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person.
