But the police don’t believe in monsters and don’t listen to the impoverished residents of Cabrini-Green. The most romantic and socially resonant film in a genre that more often favors scantily clad teens getting hacked up\, Candyman is the rare slasher that demands to be taken seriously. While plenty of theaters will spend October revisiting the horror classics\, we’re mixing things up with a night of horror shorts from hell\, celebrating the kind of short-film programming that has always been a huge part of Hysteria Fest. \n\n\n\nWe’ve put together two completely different programs. At 6 PM\, Show Me Horror celebrates horror made close to home\, with shorts from filmmakers from or connected to St. Louis and Missouri. Then at 8:15 PM\, Halloween Around the World takes us international with some of our favorite horror shorts from filmmakers around the globe.  \n\n\n\nHysteria Halloween was already planned for October 17 at Arkadin Cinema & Bar\, but following the recent accident at The Heavy Anchor\, we’ve turned the night into a fundraiser. The Heavy Anchor has been an incredible supporter of Hysteria Fest and is one of the venues for our summer festival\, so we want to return some of that support. \n\n\n\nTickets for each block are sold separately. It follows a criminologist named Duncan Richards (Charles Quigley) as he tries to thwart the dastardly plans of a hooded villain wearing a skull mask known as The Crimson Ghost. The eponymous villain is trying to steal the Cyclotrode X\, a device that can disable all electronics\, which the miscreant hopes to obtain to wreak havoc throughout the world. Cyclotrode ‘X’ is a re-edit of the twelve chapters shortened and combined into a 100-minute television film released in 1966.  \n\n\n\nThe Crimson Ghost aka Cyclotrode ‘X’ is a campy blast\, featuring countless double crosses\, sucker punches\, mind control collars and multiple people jumping from exploding vehicles\, all in an effort to foil the cloaked evildoer from obtaining the atomic device. Its genesis began in 1919\, when Benjamin Christensen\, a filmmaker often referred to as the “D.W. Griffith of Denmark”\, discovered the Malleus Maleficarum\, a 15th century manual on capturing witches\, in a bookstore. Convinced that witches still existed\, the director set out to expose their persecution from medieval times to the present day. Christensen procured funding from a Swedish production company with the guarantee that he would have complete creative freedom. The director then assembled the best craftspeople and technicians possible\, resulting in the most expensive Scandinavian film of its day. Unwilling to compromise\, Christensen included massive amounts of nudity and gore unseen in any other film of the silent era. Audacious scenes include naked witches cavorting around a bonfire and a baby\, supposedly drained of its blood\, being tossed into a stew pot\, all lorded over by Satan himself (played by Christensen.) Other sequences feature groundbreaking uses of optical effects and stop-motion animation. Häxan was banned for decades due to its graphic imagery and anti-religious themes. Francesco Dellamorte (Rupert Everett) is the groundskeeper at a cemetery where the dead just won’t stay dead—and it’s up to him to deal with those who come back to life with a hunger for human flesh. But Dellamorte’s job soon becomes much more complicated when he falls for an enigmatic young woman (Anna Falchi) whose husband has recently died. Based on the novel by Tiziano Sclavi and directed by Michele Soavi\, Cemetery Man is a late masterpiece of Italian horror: quirky\, gory\, romantic\, and the perfect lead-in to Halloween. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. You must physically come to the lobby to get your name on the waitlist. Seats are released as they become available. All remaining seats are released at showtime.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. We follow the MPAA rating guidelines for all other films.\n\n\n\nTickets can be purchased using the BUY TICKETS link above. Upon ordering\, you will receive a confirmation email from Square.
