DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING IS SOLD OUT. WAITLIST OPENS 1 HOUR BEFORE SHOWTIME. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Part gross-out comedy\, part paranoid thriller\, part twisted love letter to Toronto… The atmosphere in the audience [at the premiere of The Pee Pee Poo Poo Man] was electric as everyone in the room realized they were watching a new cult classic in real time.” – The Toronto Star \n\n\n\nInspired by a real-life series of incidents in which a man dressed as a construction worker dropped liquid feces onto unsuspecting students at the University of Toronto and York University\, THE PEE PEE POO POO MAN tells the story of a paranoid young man who launches a bizarre crime spree against the citizens of Toronto. SUMMARY:Alfred Hitchcock's SPELLBOUND (1945)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The first picture on psychoanalysis is also a tale of suspense\, and Hitchcock embellishes it with characteristically brilliant twists” – Time Out \n\n\n\n“The secret recesses of the mind are explored with brilliant and terrifying effect” (New York Herald Tribune) in this fascinating psychological thriller from Alfred Hitchcock. Featuring powerful performances from Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck\, this masterpiece of mystery\, romance and suspense boasts an Oscar-winning score by Miklós Rózsa and a haunting dream sequence designed by Salvador Dalí. Bergman plays Dr. Constance Peterson\, is a dedicated psychiatrist who puts all her passion into her work — until she falls in love with the mysterious Dr. Edwardes (Peck). When it becomes clear that Edwardes is an amnesiac who may or may not be a cold-blooded murderer\, Constance must decide whether to turn him in…or risk her life by trying to unlock the dark secrets in his mind. \n\n\n\nThough its depiction of psychological concepts like the guilt complex and amnesia may now seem dated\, the film nonetheless looks surprisingly forward-thinking at year 80. Not only was it the very first Hollywood production to explore psychoanalysis in depth\, it does so through the lens of a female psychologist bristling against a male-dominated world. With its rich\, complex performances by two of Hollywood’s greatest stars\, its surrealist touches from one of art history’s most notorious and beloved personalities\, and its characteristically twisty-turny plot courtesy of the Master of Suspense\, SPELLBOUND is ripe for rediscovery. \n\n\n\nSPELLBOUND is playing as a double feature with Mel Brooks’ underappreciated Hitchcock parody HIGH ANXIETY\, which draws heavily on its psych-hospital plot. Tickets are $9 each or $15 for the double feature. Make your selection at checkout. \n\n\n\nIn recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month\, Arkadin presents INSTITUTIONALIZED: MENTAL INSTITUTIONS ON FILM\, a series of movies that depict asylums\, sanitariums\, and psychiatric hospitals — some with unvarnished realism\, others with surrealism\, whimsy or horror. At several screenings\, academics and mental health experts will introduce the film with a talk that unpacks the film’s treatment of mental healthcare and provides context on the history of psychiatric institutions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. However\, we encourage researching titles to determine if a screening may contain content that could be upsetting to you. Please feel free to contact us for guidance on specific films. SUMMARY:Mel Brooks' underappreciated Hitchcock parody HIGH ANXIETY (1977)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A riotous spoof of Alfred Hitchcock thrillers that doubles as a loving tribute to the master of suspense\, Brooks reached his comedy peak with High Anxiety!” – Chuck O’Leary \n\n\n\nLike Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles\, Mel Brooks’ underappreciated HIGH ANXIETY is not only a hilarious gag-filled spoof but a loving homage to its source material\, in this case the classic thrillers of Alfred Hitchcock. Drawing heavily on the plot from Spellbound (which\, not coincidentally\, is playing just before HIGH ANXIETY)\, Brooks himself stars as Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Richard Thorndyke who takes over the Psycho-Neurotic Institute for the Very\, Very Nervous. After discovering his predecessor died under suspicious circumstances\, the events take a murderous turn as Thorndyke is accused of the crime and left with a full blown case of High Anxiety. Featuring many of the comedy greats from Brooks’ stable\, including Madeline Kahn\, Harvey Korman and Cloris Leachman\, HIGH ANXIETY parodies practically every classic from the Master of Suspense: Psycho\, The Birds\, Vertigo\, North by Northwest and many\, many more (not to mention the odd jab at Vincente Minnelli’s The Cobweb\, playing later this month at Arkadin!). Hitchcock himself was so impressed by Brooks’ parody\, he sent Brooks a gift-wrapped case of six very expensive bottles of Château Haut-Brion with a note thanking him for this “splendid entertainment.” \n\n\n\nHIGH ANXIETY is playing as a double feature with the Hitchcock classic SPELLBOUND\, from which it draws heavily for its psych-hospital plot. SUMMARY:SERIAL MOM (1994) -- Celebrate Mother's Day with John Waters!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Sharply funny\, wonderfully snarky\, and a better satire of our true crime obsession than most anything this century—it remains a prescient\, properly fun film without compare. It’s worth seeing for how titanically good Turner is alone.” – The Stranger \n\n\n\nThe Pope of Trash satirizes the dark heart of suburban normalcy in this wicked black comedy. Kathleen Turner plays wholesome suburban mom Beverly\, a picture-perfect homemaker whose fascination with serial killers transforms her into a Good Housekeeping murder queen who kills anyone and everyone who fails to live up to her standards. Featuring appearances by Ricki Lake\, Matthew Lillard\, Mink Stole\, Suzanne Somers\, Traci Lords and Patty Hearst\, SERIAL MOM gleefully skewers conformity\, suburbia\, and (perhaps most presciently) America’s obsession with true crime. Grab your own mama and bring her to the movies for a Mother’s Slay that’ll leave you in stitches…if Beverly doesn’t get you first! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:FORCE OF THE NINJA (1988) presented by Fist City
DESCRIPTION:Fist City is a monthly series by The Saint Louis Video Society that pulls the most obscure\, weird and rarely seen/ screened VHS Tapes from their archive and brings them to the Arkadin screen…for FREE! \n\n\n\nThis May\, we visit FIST CITY for the LAST TIME. That’s right—all good things must come to an end\, and\, in this case\, FIST CITY ends with an almighty strange passion/vanity project hybrid. \n\n\n\nFORCE OF THE NINJA (1988) is a little-known ninja film\, shot in Tucson\, by the director of DEMONWARP and NEW YEAR’S EVIL\, Emmett Alston. This film falls in-between two other ninja films directed by Mr. Alston\, the Sho Kosugi vehicle 9 DEATHS OF A NINJA (1985)\, and a 3 NINJAS-knockoff\, LITTLE NINJAS (1993)\, so this isn’t his first\, or last\, ninjitsu rodeo. FORCE OF THE NINJA pits a kindhearted ninja against a craven group of mercenaries who have kidnapped a teenage heiress to the Japanese royal family. Only thru sheer cunning\, and an amazing array of ninja skills\, can our hero (played by the avuncular Doug Ivans) rescue this girl and dismantle the evil organization. A film that’s equal parts child-like\, almost a live-action GI Joe episode\, and wildly violent\, it’s a heady combination to close out over a year of programming for FIST CITY. \n\n\n\nPlease join us as we say farewell\, and also share more info about June’s VHS SWAP MEET and the new film series from SAINT LOUIS VIDEO SOCIETY! \n\n\n\nPre-show at 6:30 pm\, featuring ninja deep cuts\, trailers\, and more! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Mary Pickford in LITTLE ANNIE ROONEY (1925) presented by Silents\, Please! STL
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by Silents\, Please! STL and will feature a special introduction from SPSTL’s Kate Stewart. \n\n\n\n“An exciting comedy!” – Battleship Pretension \n\n\n\nMary Pickford plays a “tomboy of the tenements” in this comedy drama\, which she also wrote. Filmed over ten weeks\, LITTLE ANNIE ROONEY was shot entirely on a set created by art director John D. Schulze at the Pickford Fairbanks Studio. Co-starring William Haines and a wide-ranging\, multi-ethnic cast\, the film met with huge critical and commercial success upon it’s original release\, proving fans and critics alike wanted the then 33-year old Mary to stay a child forever. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:GIRL\, INTERRUPTED (1999)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“So valuable because it contains so little of the theatrics common to pop culture depictions of mental illness… The fundamental story\, the core narrative of a young woman forced to confront her fundamental ambivalence towards life in a very strange place\, surrounded by other women who are just as strange as her\, still resonates.” – Freddie DeBoer \n\n\n\nIn 1999\, James Mangold turned Susanna Kaysen’s best-selling memoir about her stint in Claymoore Hospital’s South Bell psych ward into one of the unlikeliest cult hits in Hollywood history. While it met with mixed reviews and dismissal as “awards bait” upon its release\, GIRL\, INTERRUPTED has endured as an empathetic and unusually entertaining portrayal of mental illness\, friendship\, and social repression. Winona Ryder’s own struggles with anxiety and depression no doubt informed her deeply felt portrayal of Susanna Kaysen\, who is hospitalized against her will following a suicide attempt. There\, she meets a rogues’ gallery of young women\, who are all “fucking crazy\,” in Susanna’s words\, but she’s drawn to the rebellious Lisa Rowe\, a diagnosed sociopath. Jolie won an Oscar for her live-wire turn as Lisa\, and it’s her energy played against Ryder’s neuroticism that really sells the film (though the deep-bench supporting cast\, including Clea DuVall\, Brittany Murphy\, and Elisabeth Moss\, certainly doesn’t hurt either!). The real-life Kaysen famously regarded the film as “melodramatic drivel\,” but while it may not have portrayed her story with complete accuracy\, its wry wit\, dark humor\, and socially conscious exploration of the psychiatric healthcare system nevertheless tapped into something deep for any of us who’ve also endured struggles with mental health. Information about content can also be found on Common Sense Media\, IMDB and DoesTheDogDie.com\, as well as through general internet searches. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+. SUMMARY:FRANKIE FREAKO (2024) -- Friday Night WTF! -- $6
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Night WTF screenings are cheap\, weird\, and out of control! Cult trashterpieces\, so-bad-they’re-good crapfests\, movies that make you ask “What the hell am I watching?!” — we’ve got ’em all on Friday night. \n\n\n\n“It’s intentionally cheesy\, delightfully demented\, entirely over-the-top\, and makes no apologies for its juvenile jokes and abundant gore.” – Film Threat \n\n\n\nFrom gonzo indie filmmaker Steven Kostanski\, director of PG: Psycho Goreman\, comes this fun\, frenzied late-night pizza party of a movie that riffs on the beloved ’80s microgenre of Gremlins knock-offs: your Ghoulies\, your Munchies\, your Critters. Workaholic yuppie Conor has a dilemma: no one in his life respects him! Not his boss\, not his coworkers\, not even his wife Kristina\, who thinks he’s an uptight “square”! Conor sees no way out of this existential rut until one night while channel-surfing\, he catches a bizarre ad for a party hotline hosted by a strange dancing goblin: Frankie Freako. Conor is entranced by Frankie’s promises of wild and freaky adventures\, just a phone call away – could this be just the recipe to spice up his flavorless life? Though it received a limited release in 2024\, this lovably silly splatterama has yet to break through the way it absolutely deserves to. Mark our words: FRANKIE FREAKO is the next late-night cult sensation waiting to happen! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:THE COBWEB (1955) w/ pre-film talk on the History of the Asylum in Missouri by Felix Vincenz\, former CEO of the Forensic Treatment Center
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin is excited to present this very special screening of Vincente Minnelli’s underseen psychiatric drama THE COBWEB with a preceding talk on THE HISTORY OF THE ASYLUM IN MISSOURI by Felix Vincenz\, former CEO of the Forensic Treatment Center in St. Louis. \n\n\n\nSet in the fictional “Castle House Clinic for Nervous Disorders\,” Vincente Minnelli’s THE COBWEB is one of the more unusual American films of the 1950s: a star-studded\, lavishly mounted Cinemascope melodrama about a set of drapes. Of course\, a set of drapes is not always just a set of drapes: here\, the seemingly banal selection of a new window treatment in the clinic’s library sparks a political feud that implicates the radical methods of the clinic’s new staff lead Dr. Stewart McIver (Richard Widmark) who espouses patient democracy\, while exposing all sorts of backbiting and jealousies among both patients and staff. With a cast of screen legends that includes Lauren Bacall\, Gloria Grahame\, Lillian Gish\, Charles Boyer\, Fay Wray\, and Susan Strasberg (in her film debut)\, THE COBWEB is also notable for its unique modernist score by Leonard Rosenman\, the first twelve-tone music ever written for a motion picture. A film that questions the fine line between patient and doctor\, THE COBWEB has rightly been called “the most elaborate treatment of the psychiatric profession in any Hollywood film to date” (Psychiatry and the Cinema). \n\n\n\nBefore the film\, Felix Vincenz\, the former CEO of the Forensic Treatment Center\, will give a talk before the film on the History of the Asylum in Missouri. \n\n\n\nWhen it was released\, advertisements for THE COBWEB teased it as “The Story of the Strange Mansion on the Hill\,” and so we’ve paired the film with a talk that touches on St. Louis’ very own clinic on the hill\, the Forensic Treatment Center (formerly known as St. Louis County Insane Asylum)\, which still looms above South City at 5300 Arsenal St. Dr. Vincenz trained at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka\, Kansas\, which directly inspired the Castle Clinic in THE COBWEB. Dr\, Vincenz currently serves on the faculty of University of Missouri-St. Louis. \n\n\n\nFor anyone interested in psychiatry\, the asylum\, or the history of St. Louis\, this is a can’t-miss event! SUMMARY:ACROSS AMERICA (2024) w/ in-person Q&A with skater Chad Caruso + THE SEARCH FOR ANIMAL CHIN (1987) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nAcross America (2024) follows Chad Caruso\, a skateboarder from Long Island\, who challenges himself to skateboard alone across the United States – more than 3\,000 miles. Director John Testa documents Caruso’s 57-day journey as he travels from Venice Beach to Virginia Beach\, ultimately earning him a Guinness World Record. As Caruso navigates both physical and mental hurdles\, the film explores themes of sobriety and mortality\, providing a heartfelt portrait of the thoughts and ideas that shape his mindset. Across America is more than a skateboarding adventure—it’s a profoundly human exploration of resilience\, self-discovery\, and the universal quest for meaning. \n\n\n\nAcross America will be preceded with a screening of legendary skate video The Search for Animal Chin (1987). The Bones Brigade\, a team of young skaters that includes Tony Hawk\, Steve Caballero\, Mike McGill\, Lance Mountain & Tommy Guerrero\, embark on a quest to find the mythological first skateboarder Animal Chin who has gone missing. The team travels to far-flung locations including Hawaii and Mexico searching for Animal Chin\, culminating in the discovery of Animal Chin’s secret ramp: a magnificent double half pipe. The Search for Animal Chin was the third Bones Brigade release\, and is regarded as one of the first skate team videos to feature a narrative plot. It ultimately helped popularize skateboarding throughout the country in the 1980s.   \n\n\n\nThe Strange Brew cult movie night is excited to host a double dose of skateboarding action\, including the St. Louis premiere of the new documentary Across America (2024)with an introduction and post-film Q&A with skater and the subject of the film Chad Caruso\, as well as an archival screening of The Search for Animal Chin (1987) on Wednesday\, May 21 at 7 pm.  \n\n\n\nA portion of ticket proceeds for this event will benefit Sk8 Liborius. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:SHOCK (1946) -- celebrate Vincent Price's birthday weekend with a FREE screening of one of his earliest villain roles!
DESCRIPTION:RESERVE SEATS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Not only does Vincent give a great\, measured performance\, but Anabel Shaw gives a brilliant and exhausting performance as poor\, persecuted Janet\, and Lynn Bari is so good that you want to murder her due to how scheming and conniving she is. This film does not stop for breath!” – Pale Writer \n\n\n\nHelp us celebrate Vincent Price’s birthday (a bit early) with one of his most underseen treasures\, 1946’s SHOCK. This shadowy horror-noir boasts one of Price’s earliest villain roles as well as one of his first lead turns. It also just so happens to fit beautifully into Arkadin’s theme this month\, INSTITUTIONALIZED: MENTAL INSTITUTIONS ON FILM! Price plays Dr. Richard Cross\, who savagely beats his wife to death with a candlestick just minutes into the film. This villainous deed is witnessed by the unsuspecting Janet (Anabel Shaw)\, which sends her into…you guessed it: SHOCK! Dr. Cross conspires with his lover Elaine (Lynn Bari)—who also happens to be the head nurse of the psych hospital where he practices—to keep this poor young woman in a state of petrified silence\, eventually having her committed to his hospital. As Cross and Elaine grow increasingly desperate to ensure her lips stay sealed\, the film builds to a…ahem…shocking climax. SHOCK helped cement Price’s status as a master of elegant menace\, with one reviewer describing his performance as “terrific\, smooth\, menacing\, and as dangerous as a tiger’s paw.” \n\n\n\nThis screening’s on us — totally free! Tickets can be reserved using the button above. \n\n\n\nWe’ll have a Vincent Price pre-show at 5 pm as well as Vincent Price trivia (with prizes!) before the film. SUMMARY:SHUTTER ISLAND (2010) -- 15th Anniversary!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A divinely dark and devious brain tease…Scorsese has given us a new noir classic.” – The Los Angeles Times \n\n\n\nSet in 1954\, this “intense\, gripping and unforgettable” (Richard Roeper) psychological thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels\, who is sent to investigate the disappearance of a patient from an asylum for the criminally insane located on an isolated island. Nothing is what it seems in this gripping chiller as Daniels unravels a labyrinthine mystery involving mind-control experiments. Based on the best-selling novel by Dennis Lehane\, SHUTTER ISLAND showcases Martin Scorsese’s masterful direction at its most deliciously pulpy and sneakily subversive. A seamless fusion of Cold War paranoia\, Lewton-esque psychological horror\, and seductive film noir\, SHUTTER ISLAND has rightfully come to be recognized as one of the finest thrillers of the 21st century. SUMMARY:James Stewart in the heartwarming classic HARVEY (1950) w/ intro by mental health professional Kate Stewart -- $7
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“This classic farce film is a wonderful and heartwarming adventure.” – Lydia Carrick \n\n\n\nJames Stewart gives one of his finest performances in this lighthearted film based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Mary Chase. Stewart stars as the good-natured Elwood P. Dowd\, whose constant companion is Harvey\, a six-foot tall rabbit that only he can see. When Elwood’s sister Veta Louise (Josephine Hull\, in an Oscar-winning performance) decides to put Elwood in a mental hospital\, a hilarious mix-up occurs and she finds herself committed instead. It’s up to Elwood to straighten out the mess with his kindly philosophy\, a bit of drink\, and his “imaginary” friend. This popular classic\, which now celebrates its 75th anniversary\, has delighted audiences for generations with its subtly subversive call for radical acceptance. \n\n\n\nThis screening will be introduced by practicing mental health professional and film fanatic Kate Stewart\, who also hosts the monthly silent film series\, Silents\, Please! SUMMARY:THE SNAKE PIT (1948) w/ intro by scholar of in-patient mental health treatment Dr. Morgan Shields
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A drama that builds to a fever pitch of tension and holds itself there with superlative artistry.” – The Hollywood Reporter \n\n\n\nAnatole Litvak’s classic adaptation of Mary Jane Ward’s book\, THE SNAKE PIT is a harrowing portrait of a young woman (Olivia de Havilland\, in a stunning\, Oscar-nominated performance) whose life is torn apart when she suffers a mental breakdown and is admitted to an institution. A plea for understanding\, a critique of contemporary conditions and treatments\, and a superb melodrama\, this is a film that both horrifies and touches. With its vivid depictions of electro-shock therapy and chaotic conditions inside a psychiatric hosptial\, THE SNAKE PIT spurred legal reforms in psychiatric care throughout the country\, helping to change the laws in 26 states\, according to 20th Century Fox. A critical and popular hit upon its release in 1948\, THE SNAKE PIT was nominated for six Academy Awards and was admired by the poet laureate of women’s mental health treatment\, Sylvia Plath\, whose classic novel The Bell Jar even took inspiration from the film. \n\n\n\nThis screening will be introduced by scholar of in-patient mental health treatment\, Dr. Morgan Shields\, Assistant Professor at Washington University’s Brown School of Social Work. SUMMARY:$3 MONDAY MYSTERY MOVIE: A Thrilling Murder Mystery!
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the last Monday of every month\, Arkadin chooses an underseen deep cut to inflict upon an unwitting audience. Though the genre and tone may change\, the price always remains the same: three measly bucks. You can’t afford not to get yourself a ticket! \n\n\n\nThis month\, Arkadin brings you a truly unique and underseen mini-masterpiece of suspense that will leave you guessing till the last frame. With wry humor and a meta sensibility that can only be described as “De Palma-esque\,” this ingenious little shocker remains little known\, but is truly a must-see. A rare treat that deconstructs our relationship with cinema while flirting with the surreal but still manages to deliver a ripper of a climax\, all we can say is that this particular mystery movie benefits enormously from being seen in a theater. SUMMARY:Joan Crawford wields an ax in STRAIT-JACKET (1964)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A stark\, vicious little b-movie featuring a truly berserk and mesmerizing performance from bitch goddess extraordinaire Joan Crawford” – The Lobotomy Room Film Club \n\n\n\nFilm legend Joan Crawford is absolutely electrifying in this deliciously tawdry (yet disarmingly empathetic) shocker from B-movie maestro William Castle. Crawford stars as Lucy Harbin\, who\, upon discovering her husband in bed with another woman\, chops up the couple with an ax — a brtual incident witnessed by her three-year-old daughter. After spending 20 years in a mental institution\, Lucy is released into the care of her brother (Leif Erickson) with whom her still-traumatized daughter (Diane Baker) lives. But not long after she’s released\, a spate of ax murders start occurring. Has Lucy returned to her Lizzie Borden-esque ways? Find out in STRAIT-JACKET’s rousing\, blood-chilling finale! \n\n\n\nWritten by Robert Bloch (author of Psycho)\, and directed by Castle with gleefully lurid charm\, it’s no wonder STRAIT-JACKET is a favorite of shockmeister John Waters\, who excerpts this twisted mother-daughter psychodrama in his own film Serial Mom (which just so happens to be playing this Mother’s Day at Arkadin!). SUMMARY:SHOCK CORRIDOR (1963) w/ intro by psychology professor Dr. Madeline Bruce
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A WILD EXPERIENCE! The most resonant exploitation movie of its era… Using a mental hospital as a microcosm of a country whose prosperous post-war facade is slowly cracking up is the sort of faux-lowbrow cunning that turns a nasty little B-movie into an enduring classic—not just unsane but undeniable.” – Adam Nayman\, The Ringer \n\n\n\nDescribed by critic Dave Kehr as “harsh\, grotesque\, and violent—and\, incidentally\, brilliant in a very original way\,” some 60 years after its initial release\, SHOCK CORRIDOR still grabs you by the throat and never lets go. In this wildly gripping thriller-noir\, the great American writer-director-producer Samuel Fuller masterfully charts the uneasy terrain between sanity and madness. Seeking a Pulitzer Prize\, reporter Johnny Barrett (Peter Breck) has himself committed to a mental hospital to investigate a murder. As he closes in on the killer\, insanity closes in on him. Constance Towers costars as Johnny’s coolheaded stripper girlfriend. With its startling commentary on racism and other hot-button issues in sixties America and its daring photography by Stanley Cortez\, SHOCK CORRIDOR has had far-reaching influence. \n\n\n\nThis screening will be introduced by Dr. Madeline Bruce\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Webster University and a clinical consultant at UTHealth. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:LADIES THEY TALK ABOUT (1933) presented by Forbidden Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForbidden Hollywood is a monthly series hosted by STL film critic Katie Carter celebrating the Pre-Code films of the early 1930s\, when movies were wild\, racy\, transgressive\, and tons of fun. \n\n\n\nConsidered one of the first— if not the first— women in prison movies\, 1933’s Ladies They Talk About stars a perfectly cast Barbara Stanwyck as Nan Taylor\, the hardboiled member of a gang of bank robbers who ends up taking the rap for a job and ending up serving time in San Quentin. While her will they/won’t they romance with radio evangelist David Slade (Preston Foster) is contrived\, the interactions between the female inmates provide a wildly entertaining and illuminating glimpse at clashing feminine emotions. Based on a play by Dorothy Mackaye\, inspired by her own stint in San Quentin for conspiring to coverup the death of her husband\, Ladies They Talk About contains all the ingredients to make it a prototype of what would become a popular exploitation subgenre once the Production Code disintegrated in the 1960s\, from cat fights and queer overtones to offbeat musical interludes and frank discussions of sex and the inmates’ misdemeanors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Post-Apocalyptic Skateboard Rock Opera SHREDDER ORPHEUS (1990) presented by Strange Brew
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew — winner of the 2025 A-List Award for Best Movie Night in St. Louis. Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina will provide an introduction. \n\n\n\nShredder Orpheus (1989) is a low-budget reimagining of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice presented as a post-apocalyptic skateboard rock opera. Orpheus (played by director Robert McGinley) is a local rock star that must descend to the underworld on a skateboard-from-hell to rescue his kidnapped wife and stop Hades from broadcasting a hypnotic message from the Devil’s “Euthanasia TV Network” that could destroy the world. Shredder Orpheus also captures a rare acting performance by legendary spoken-word poet Steven Jesse Bernstein (known as Seattle’s Williams S. Burroughs) who narrates the story as well.  \n\n\n\nThe film was shot in Seattle\, Washington without obtaining permits for many of its locations. It had a one-night-only premiere at Seattle’s Neptune Theater on Halloween of 1989\, before it later gained a cult following for its limited VHS release. The film was rediscovered by the American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) and reissued on Blu-Ray in 2023 to modern audiences that embraced its weird amalgamation of influences from new-wave music videos\, Bones Brigade skate tapes\, and avant-garde art.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Double Feature -- ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932) + FREAKS (1932) presented by Dark Dream Cinema
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDark Dream Cinema is a monthly film series devoted to the creeping undercurrents of the arthouse scene\, hosted by Michael Morlaine. \n\n\n\nBody horror made a quantum leap in ’32\, with the twin releases of these two markedly different exploitation classics. In Island of Lost Souls\, Charles Laughton plays the sinister Dr. Moreau\, whose gene-splicing lab in the jungle spawns a new class of hybrids bent on revenge; meanwhile\, Tod Browning’s Freaks portrays the denizens of a traveling sideshow as they uncover a plot by the normies against one of their own. \n\n\n\nWhile each film covers different angles of the class struggle\, Freaks has earned particular notoriety for its casting of actual sideshow performers with genuine physical anomalies. Though intended as a tribute to the kind-hearted carny folk of his youth\, Browning’s masterpiece crossed a line that audiences couldn’t bear\, leading to mass panic at its initial screenings and effectively ending his career. Come see what all the fuss was about as we unveil them back to back\, in a double header that’ll scar you for life. \n\n\n\n“Cinema’s boldest statement on the dichotomy between outer appearance and inner life; no wonder the beauty-obsessed Hollywood studio system had no idea what to do with it. It’s one of the most powerful films ever made about the need for humanity and solidarity in the face of cruelty and oppression.” – Abhilash ‘NOx’ Baruah on Freaks \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArkadin does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. Celebrate one of the greatest legends of pop music with his greatest videos\, live performances\, and of course some purple drinks! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheater Policies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll seats are first-come\, first-served.\n\n\n\nThe theater opens 30 minutes prior to showtime\, except for “Happy Hour” events and pre-shows when the theater opens at the listed start time.\n\n\n\nAll ages are welcome at Arkadin except for Drinkolas Cage events\, which are restricted to 21+.
