Strange Brew presents DUNE (1984)
September 1, 2021 : 8:00 pm
Presented by long-time STL cult film series STRANGE BREW
In anticipation of the new high-profile Dune adaptation coming to theaters in October, Strange Brew takes a look back at David Lynch’s controversial adaptation of Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi tome. Somehow managing to be simultaneously campy, confusing, and mind-bendingly beautiful, Dune bears the hallmarks of Lynch’s inimitable surrealism while also offering moments of gonzo cheese, like Patrick Stewart charging into battle cradling a pug. Featuring monstrous sand worms, an ultra-’80s score from rock band Toto, super sexy Sting, and the hideous, rotting Baron Harkonen, the film stars Lynch regular Kyle MacLachlan as reluctant messiah Paul Atreides who fights for control of the spice planet Arrakis 10,000 years in the future. Dune may may not always be “good,” but it’s a helluva thing to marvel at. In it’s weird little way, an absolute must-see for fans of the novel, Lynch devotees, and lovers of cult cinema.
Jon Scorfina of Strange Brew will host a discussion of the novel before the film, so brush up on Frank Herbert’s classic and share your thoughts!
