American filmmaker Pete Ohs (cinematographer on Arkadin favorite OBEX) observes the combustible chemistry between a Polish florist and a British tourist in this charming postcard of sapphic synchronicity, shot in secret during the height of 2024’s Brat Summer. Charli stars as Bethany, an English girl who’s been brought back to her old Warsaw stomping grounds by her doting boyfriend, Claude (Jeremy O. Harris). Claude plans to pop the question, but Bethany is more interested in rekindling her (literally) volcanic relationship with old friend/kinda-old flame Jel (Lena Góra), throwing everyone’s life into deep uncertainty. A sensitive and assured comedy with a loose, semi-improvised vibe, ERUPCJA reveals Charli to be a truly magnetic screen presence. If that whole music thing doesn’t work out, she’s got a bright future ahead of her in pictures.
