Adapted from the sardonic graphic novel by cult comics legend Daniel Clowes (who also co-wrote the screenplay), Ghost World is bitter, funny, sad, and strangely endearing—as idiosyncratic and authentic a portrait of the end of adolescence as has ever been produced. Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) are best friends, united by their mutual cynicism and disgust at the pre-fab horror of suburban living. Enid, the more acerbic of the two, becomes obsessed (possibly even infatuated) with a geeky record collector (Steve Buscemi) twice her age. Directed by documentarian Terry Zwigoff (Crumb), the film captures the eminently adolescent feeling of being in high school and knowing that the world sucks but having no power to do anything about it. As Enid and Rebecca are thrust into the uncertainty of adulthood protected only by a shell of resentment, fissures in their friendship begin to show. Angst, disaffection, and outsider alienation have rarely been captured with such note-perfect precision.
