O-BI, O-BA: THE END OF CIVILIZATION (1985) — $3
May 28, 2023 : 1:00 pm
“#1 Must-See Obscure Sci-fi Movies You May Have Missed — a post-apocalyptic film like no other.” –Taste of Cinema
A grimly compelling post-apocalyptic tale from visionary Polish director Piotr Szulkin, O-bi, O-ba: The End of Civilization is little known in the United States, perhaps because its vision of atomic holocaust offers little of the comforting hopefulness to which American audiences are so accustomed. Szulkin’s dense, symbol-laden vision of the future imagines a dystopia in which the few humans left on Earth following nuclear war live in a labyrinthine underground bunker, awaiting salvation from a ship known as the Ark. Jerzy Stuhr (Camera Buff, Three Colors: White) stars as a disillusioned overseer of this subterranean society whose encounters with his fellow doomed are at times absurd, frightening, and delirious. Filmed in a deep blueish hue that evokes James Cameron’s more Hollywood-friendly vision of the future in The Terminator, O-bi, O-ba is an existentialist nightmare of humanity gone mad — haunting, beautiful, and all too relevant for our contemporary world, which finds itself once again balanced on the precipice of nuclear catastrophe.
