The Village People in CAN’T STOP THE MUSIC (1980)
August 18, 2023 : 6:30 pm
“Can’t Stop the Music is a film of wild contradictions. It somehow manages to feel simultaneously G and X rated…There will never be another movie like [it]. It’s a goddamn unicorn. Even by the exceedingly lenient standards of discoploitation it’s spectacularly tacky and vulgar.” -Nathan Rabin
An wonderfully misguided exercise in trend-chasing, Can’t Stop the Music was dated upon delivery, but lives on as a glorious encapsulation of disco culture at its most opulently ridiculous. Glitz producer Allan Carr (co-producer of Grease) tries to cash in on the late-’70s disco boom, turning The Village People into comedy superstars. Comedienne Nancy Walker directed this musical chronicle, which relates the completely fictionalized tale of the group’s formation and rise to success. Valerie Perrine is Samantha Simpson, a helpful ex-model who attempts to get her roommate, Jack Morrell’s (Steve Guttenberg), songwriting career off the ground by assembling a motley group of her Greenwich Village friends (The Village People) together to cut a demo tape of Jack’s ditties. All Samantha has to do is charm the square lawyer Ron White (Caitlyn Jenner) in order to get him to listen to The Village People’s scintillating disco strains. The film is highlighted by elaborately staged musical numbers — such as “YMCA’s” speedo-clad Busby Berkeley take-offs and “Macho Man’s” flaming baton sequence — which must be seen to be believed.
