THE HOWLING (1981) — 4K Restoration

October 26, 2023 : 7:00 pm

“As much as politics has always been embedded in Dante’s work, The Howling is rightly remembered as a model of low-budget horror, turning the forest setting into a Grimm storybook of dense canopies and creepy cottages, and giving effects artist Rob Bottin a generous allotment to work his magic.” -Scott Tobias, The Guardian

This groundbreaking, darkly comic horror film from director Joe Dante changed the look and feel of werewolf movies in ways light-years distant from Universal’s horror classic The Wolf Man. Karen White (Dee Wallace), a LA news anchor with a serial killer for a stalker, leads the man into a trap where the police are able to kill him. In order to recover from the traumatic event, she and her husband are sent to “The Colony,” a country resort where their marriage is tested by the fact that there are vicious werewolves everywhere. Dante fills his film with heartfelt homages to classic horror movies, as well as a few clever visual puns and in-jokes from his tenure with Roger Corman, but never strays from the path to genuine horror, particularly when Rob Bottin’s chilling monsters are onscreen.

Restoration:
Joe Dante on the 4K restoration – “I made sure to supervise the laserdisc transfer of The Howling because I was so disappointed with the quality of the VHS release. Over the years, I’ve color corrected numerous version of the movie, partly because it’s had so many different owners and distributors—some for home video, some for cable, syndication, etc. But I can honestly say this 4K is the best The Howling has looked since it came out of the lab in 1980, maybe better. I’m happy to have it back in circulation at last.”
