BACK TO SCHOOL CHILLS — Unman, Wittering and Zigo (1971) w/ Insane Safety PSA film Apaches (1977)

September 1 : 3:00 pm 5:15 pm

Get ready for the school season with a duo of films that explore the violent world of British schoolchildren. Two chilling films from underrated Scottish filmmaker John Mackenzie that are both guaranteed to give you the Sunday scaries!

APACHES (1977)
Perhaps the most notorious government-commissioned PSA film of all time, APACHES depicts a series of violent, horrifying deaths to teach unsuspecting rural kids about the dangers of playing near farm equipment. Tractors, slurry wells, farm chemicals — these become the implements of tragic death in this shocking, nearly surreal, short directed by John Mackenzie (The Long Good Friday), in which pastoral England becomes a vision of unremitting horror.

UNMAN, WITTERING AND ZIGO (1971)
When idealistic new teacher John Ebony (David Hemmings) arrives at the hidebound Chantrey School for Boys to replace a suddenly deceased schoolmaster, he gets more than he bargained for with a class of defiant, entitled brats whom he begins to suspect may have murdered his predecessor. Are these merely obnoxious urchins, or could they in fact be cold-blooded killers? And where the heck is the perpetually absent Zigo? , to be unruly and defiant. Directed with a blunt, hard edge by John Mackenzie, this film adaptation of Giles Cooper’s classic play presents a scathing exposé of the kind of environment from which brutish empires are born.
