HARD BOILED (1992)

April 2, 2021 : 8:00 pm 10:30 pm

Uniting operatic macho emotion with some of the most exquisitely choreographed gunplay ever filmed, Hard Boiled is the crime thriller as blood-soaked ballet. The last work made by John Woo in his native Hong Kong before a lengthy sojourn in Hollywood, the film represents the apotheosis of the action auteur’s hypnotically bombastic style. Pitting world-weary detective “Tequila” Yuen (Woo regular Chow Yun-fat in a performance of tightly coiled intensity) against a fierce band of Triad smugglers, Hard Boiled climaxes with a breathtakingly sustained sequence set in a hospital, in which Tequila must protect a newborn baby from an unending hurricane of gunfire. That incredible set piece, like so much of Woo’s groundbreaking work, has been endlessly imitated–The Fast and the Furious franchise ripped it off wholesale in its eighth installment–but no one can match the high-powered poetry of Woo’s pioneering vision.
