MAYA DEREN & FRIENDS: A Program of Experimental Films by Female Directors — $3

March 29 : 4:00 pm 6:00 pm

“My films are for everyone. I include myself, for I believe that I am a part of, not apart from humanity; that nothing I may feel, think, perceive, experience, despise, desire, or despair of is really unknowable to any other human.” – Maya Deren

In March 2025, Arkadin is exploring Female Filmmakers on the Edge, and perhaps no filmmaker surveyed the boundaries of cinematic possibility more exquisitely than Maya Deren. Surrealistic, choreographic, poetic, Deren’s films remain some of the most entrancing and mysterious in the history of cinema. We present a selection of Deren’s work, including her immortal 1943 dreamlike masterpiece MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON, along with shorts by other avant-garde female filmmakers, all of whom upend conventional notions of what a film can and should be.

This program will run approximately 1 hour, 45 minutes.

This film is presented as part of Arkadin’s FEMALE FILMMAKERS ON THE EDGE, exploring works by female directors that boldly challenge conventions and expand the scope of what cinema can be.
