12 MONKEYS (1995) w/ LA JETÉE (1962) presented by Strange Brew

December 6, 2023 : 7:00 pm

This film is presented by St. Louis’s long-running cult film series Strange Brew and will feature a pre-film intro by Strange Brew programmer Jon Scorfina.

Terry Gilliam’s time-travel masterpiece 12 Monkeys launched the director from a critics-darlingto one of the most in-demand directors of his generation. Released at the tail-end of 1995, Gilliam’s strange sci-fi vision of lone prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis) traveling to the past in an effort to prevent a deadly virus from wiping out the majority of the world’s population, quickly became the director’s most commercially successful film. Despite its critical and commercial praise, 12 Monkeys does not compromise Gilliam’s unique visual flourishes or challenging non-linear narratives, making it one of the most peculiar sci-fi films of the ’90s.

The story follows James Cole’s journey to the past. The few remaining human survivors of 2035 are forced to live underground and are grasping at straws to find a solution to an airborne virus. James Cole is forced by a group of scientists to investigate the Army of the Twelve Monkeys who are believed to have released the deadly virus in 1996. Cole’s investigation in the past quickly lands him in a psychiatric ward, where he meets fellow patient and extreme environmentalist Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt) and his psychiatrist Dr. Kathyrn Faily (Madeleine Stowe). He desperately tries to convince them that his apocalyptic story of the future isn’t the ravings of a madman.  12 Monkeys allowed for Bruce Willis to break away from his action hero persona and explore a significantly more dramatic role, while also earning Brad Pitt his first-ever Academy Award Nomination.

12 Monkeys will be shown with the French new wave short-film La Jetée from 1962, which was the direct inspiration for Gilliam’s feature-length homage. La Jetée is an influential B&W short that is composed almost entirely from still photos and explores a similar story of post-nuclear war time-travel.
