BAY OF BLOOD (a.k.a. Twitch of the Death Nerve) presented by Counter Program — OUTDOOR SCREENING!

September 30, 2023 : 8:00 pm

This screening is presented by Arkadin’s new series COUNTER PROGRAM, an alternative to the multiplex, and will feature an intro by local film critic Joshua Ray, founder of The Take-Up.

A darkly funny giallo-horror with an ecological bent, Mario Bava’s BAY OF BLOOD (a.k.a. Twitch of the Death Nerve, CarnageBlood Bath, and Last House – Part 2) was a major influence on the slasher craze of the ’80s, particularly the early Friday the 13th films. Infused with Bava’s trademark sense of style and atmosphere, Bay of Blood achieved notoriety in part thanks to its impressive body count: no fewer than thirteen characters are brutally dispatched, each slaying marked by creativity and brutality. A great opening scene builds suspensefully and culminates with a wheelchair-bound countess being brutally hanged. The killer reveals himself, but is just as quickly dispatched by an unseen third person. Later, one youth receives a machete-like blade through the face, while two of his friends are speared in the act of coitus — one of the several macabre scenes that were repeated verbatim in Friday the 13th, Pt. 2. Climaxing with a gangbuster denouement that Joe Dante once dubbed “the best ending since Citizen Kane,” Bay of Blood is an eminently satisfying slice of Italian grindhouse sleaze.

“Twitch unreels like a macabre, ironic joke, a movie built like an inescapable trap for its own anti-hero … Seen today, the violence in this movie remains as potent and explicit as anything glimpsed in contemporary ‘splatter’ features.” -Tim Lucas, Fangoria
