With a dizzying of old-school in-camera cinematic trickery, Francis Coppola’s 1992 version of Bram Stoker’s immortal novel is perhaps the most exuberant, extravagant Dracula ever made. Gary Oldman stars as an alternately urbane and decrepit version of the blood-sucking Count while Winona Ryder brings an ineffable sensuality to Mina, the vampire’s paramour. Anthony Hopkins plays Van Helsing, the vampire slayer, with tongue firmly in cheek while musician Tom Waits bounces off the walls as Dracula’s hapless familiar Renfield, who craves the blood of insects and cats. And who can forget poor Keanu Reeves in one of his more controversial performances as Jonathan Harker, who has the “misfortune” of getting seduced by Dracula’s three half-naked wives. There’s a little bit of everything in this version of Dracula: gore, high-speed horseback chases, passion, and longing.
