“A beguiling and enveloping tale of the power of the occultΒ and the susceptibility of the human mind to suggestion.” – Backseat Mafia

No director before or since Jacques Tourneur has so expertly tapped into the eerie power of suggestion. With subtle gestures and simple images, the horror maestro evokes unseen forces of unfathomable evil. And nowhere is Tourneur’s mastery of creeping terror on fuller display than in his late-period masterpiece, Night of the Demon. Released in the US, as CURSE OF THE DEMON, the film tells the tale of American professor John Holden, who arrives in London for a conference on parapsychology only to discover that the colleague he was supposed to meet has been killed in a freak accident the day before. Investigating the death, Holden stumbles upon a devil-worshipping cult that may shake his faith in science. Tourneur never wanted to show the monster at the film’s heart, and while its B-movie campiness is undeniable, it’s also pretty f’ing cool too. Ultimately, Night of the Demon offers the best of both worlds: it’s a subtle, expertly crafted tale of suspense and a badass creature feature all for the price of one!
