Dark fantasy masterpiece EXCALIBUR (1981)

November 29 : 5:00 pm 7:15 pm

“A near-perfect blend of action, romance, fantasy and philosophy, finely acted and beautifully filmed” – Variety

In the early 1980s, visionary director John Boorman (Zardoz) delivered one of the greatest fantasy films of all time, a hard-edged, R-rated treatment of Arthurian legend that spawned the ’80s dark fantasy boom. Inspired by Sir Thomas Malory’s classic Le Morte d’Arthur, EXCALIBUR depicts the classic tale of Arthur (Nigel Terry) removing the sword Excalibur from the stone, teaming up with the wizard Merlin (Nicol Williamson), forming the Knights of the Round Table, and questing for the Holy Grail with muscular action and an impeccable beauty. Featuring majestic costumes, intense special effects, and glistening cinematography that earned an Oscar nod, EXCALIBUR is one of the purest attempts to translate sword-and-sorcery mythology to the big screen. The film features Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart, and Gabriel Byrne in early screen roles, as well as Helen Mirren as the spellbinding enchantress Morgan le Fay. Packed with action, magic, and surprisingly rich ideas, it’s no wonder EXCALIBUR has earned a legion of fans, including filmmaker Zack Snyder, who named this “perfect meeting of movies and mythology” his favorite movie of all time.
