Don’t Push Pause Podcast presents THE MONSTER SQUAD (1987)
October 7, 2022 : 8:00 pm
Don’t Push Pause Podcast will be hosting this outdoor screening of Fred Dekker’s THE MONSTER SQUAD, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year! Join us for the film that inspired the podcast! Whether it’s your absolute favorite or a first-time viewing, Don’t Push Pause wants you there!
A group of adolescent monster movie enthusiasts form a club that meets in a treehouse in this pre-teen horror feature. When Dracula, The Mummy, Frankenstein, and The Wolfman are joined by Gill-Man in the search for a magic amulet, the boys form the Monster Squad to battle the forces of evil. The boys get unexpected help from Frankenstein when the monster grows tired of being continually bossed around by Dracula. The horror comedy is usually a contradiction in terms but The Monster Squad is a rare successful example of the format. The secret of its success is Shane Black and Fred Dekker’s script, which blends homage and lampoon in a way that sees humor in the horror genre without ever disrespecting it…. The Monster Squad is a smart, fast-paced delight that horror fans of all ages can enjoy and appealing enough to cross over to viewers who aren’t genre fans. (AllMovie)
“[O]ozes geek-love for its subject matter; it’s clear the filmmakers are just as enamored of things that go bump in the night as their fearless kiddie vampire-slayers. That ingratiating affection for classic horror permeates every facet of the film, from the way monster-maker Stan Winston takes on ubiquitous horror icons to Black and Dekker’s snappy banter to the fine performances of monsters Tom Noonan (as Frankenstein), Jon Gries (as a tormented werewolf), and the elegantly understated Regehr [as Count Dracula].” (Nathan Rabin, The A.V. Club)
