Double Feature — ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932) + FREAKS (1932) presented by Dark Dream Cinema

June 5 : 7:00 pm 9:30 pm

Body horror made a quantum leap in ’32, with the twin releases of these two markedly different exploitation classics. In Island of Lost Souls, Charles Laughton plays the sinister Dr. Moreau, whose gene-splicing lab in the jungle spawns a new class of hybrids bent on revenge; meanwhile, Tod Browning’s Freaks portrays the denizens of a traveling sideshow as they uncover a plot by the normies against one of their own.

While each film covers different angles of the class struggle, Freaks has earned particular notoriety for its casting of actual sideshow performers with genuine physical anomalies. Though intended as a tribute to the kind-hearted carny folk of his youth, Browning’s masterpiece crossed a line that audiences couldn’t bear, leading to mass panic at its initial screenings and effectively ending his career. Come see what all the fuss was about as we unveil them back to back, in a double header that’ll scar you for life.

“Cinema’s boldest statement on the dichotomy between outer appearance and inner life; no wonder the beauty-obsessed Hollywood studio system had no idea what to do with it. It’s one of the most powerful films ever made about the need for humanity and solidarity in the face of cruelty and oppression.” – Abhilash ‘NOx’ Baruah on Freaks
