DROP DEAD GORGEOUS (1999) — 25th Anniversary Screening!
November 1 : 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
“Possibly my favorite movie of all time…hilarious, surprisingly tender, and lavishly, magnificently absurd. The black comedy of Drop Dead Gorgeous is guided by a deranged value system that’s particular to the world of teen-age girls.” -Jia Tolentino, The New Yorker
A flop in its initial theatrical release 25 years ago, Drop Dead Gorgeous has enjoyed a long cultic affection among bored teenagers, many of them female and/or queer, who’ve found in it a cynical, black-comic reflection of their own disaffection. Starring a cavalcade of turn-of-the-century teen stars, including Kirsten Dunst, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, and (in her screen debut) Amy Adams, this outrageous mockumentary is a ferocious takedown of teen beauty pageants and Midwest Nice. An annual beauty pageant in small-town Minnesota turns ridiculously competitive and ultimately chaotic in this biting comedy. Amber Atkins (Dunst), the daughter of hard-drinking mom Annette (Ellen Barkin), and Becky Leeman (Richards), who is motivated by her former beauty-queen mother, Gladys (Kirstie Alley), are among the top contenders in the event. As Amber, Becky, and other local girls prepare for the big day, bizarre incidents occur, leading up to an ending with a bang. A gleefully offensive and bitingly satirical dagger through the heart of American optimism, Drop Dead Gorgeous is the perfect antidote to election season!
Screening as part of a deliriously daffy Denise Richards double feature, with Tammy & the T-Rex!
