Eccentric Fairy-Tale Classic DONKEY SKIN (1970)

April 13 : 3:00 pm 4:45 pm

“It changed my whole life! Combines this beautiful, magical fairy tale world with this very dark and very realistic psychological material.” – Anna Biller, director of THE LOVE WITCH

In this lovingly crafted, wildly eccentric adaptation of a classic French fairy tale by Charles Perrault (Cinderella), Jacques Demy casts the immaculate Catherine Deneuve as a princess who must go into hiding as a scullery maid in order to fend off an unwanted marriage proposal—from her own father, the king (Jean Marais). A topsy-turvy riches-to-rags fable with songs by Michel Legrand, DONKEY SKIN creates a tactile fantasy world that’s perched on the border between the earnest and the satiric, and features Delphine Seyrig in a delicious supporting role as a fashionable fairy godmother.

This film is screening as part of Arkadin’s series ANIMALIA MANIA, which spotlights films heavily featuring non-human creatures — some friendly, others deadly.
