Come celebrate Rex Manning Day a few days early with the ultimate ode to record stores and the people who work at them: Allan Moyle’s 1995 cult classic Empire Records. Intended to (rather cynically) appeal to the burgeoning Gen-X market, the film was a massive flop upon its initial release but found new life and an ardent following among VHS-renting and DVD-buying millennials. Featuring a who’s who of ’90s stars, including Renée Zellweger, Ethan Embry, Robin Tunney, Debi Mazar, Anthony LaPaglia, Rory Cochrane, and of course Liv Tyler in her iconic fuzzy-sweater-and-pleated-skirt combo, the film is a nostalgic time capsule of aimless rebellion, radio-friendly alt rock and end-of-history ennui.
