Erotic Supernatural Horror CAT PEOPLE (1982)

April 25 : 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

“[A] dark, almost demented vision of embryonic good and evil” – Film-Authority

A remake of the 1942 Jacques Tourneur shadowy classic, Paul Schrader’s CAT PEOPLE is a scintillating exercise in hothouse-horror atmospherics. The film stars Nastassja Kinski in a hypnotic performance as Irena, a beautiful young woman who finds love for the first time with a hunky zookeeper (John Heard). But Irena is haunted by a bizarre family secret that may be tied to a series of killings enacted by a mysterious panther. Filled with surrealist imagery inspired by Jean Cocteau and powered by a throbbing synth score by Giorgio Moroder (including a powerhouse theme song with vocals by David Bowie that was later repurposed for the climactic sequence of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds), Schrader’s erotic fantasy of passion and terrorretains an uncanny power that has made it a cult classic.

This film is screening as part of Arkadin’s series ANIMALIA MANIA, which spotlights films heavily featuring non-human creatures — some friendly, others deadly.
