CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN: Film Noir Double Feature: DETOUR (1945) / THE HITCH-HIKER (1953)

April 7, 2021 : 8:00 pm

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN. ALL THOSE WHO PURCHASED TICKETS IN ADVANCE WILL BE ISSUED REFUNDS.

A double shot of shadowy fatalism from two idiosyncratic masters of film noir, this pair of dark-hearted classics of low-budget thrill-making are like a punch to the gut and a knife to the throat. Powered by Ann Savage’s searing, sneering turn as femme fatale Vera, who domineers hard-luck loverboy Al (Tom Neal), Edgar G. Ulmer’s Detour is a clammy, claustrophobic psychodrama of desperation and despair, underlaid by a tantalizingly sado-masochistic subtext. The Hitch-Hiker, directed by one of Golden Age Hollywood’s few female directors–actress-turned-auteur Ida Lupino–is a taught, desert-set thriller about a friendly fishing trip that transforms into a nervy contest of wills between a couple of strait-laced squares (Edmond O’Brien and Frank Lovejoy) and a sociopathic, pistol-toting hitcher (William Talman) who takes vicious aim at their dull, middle-class way of life.
