FREE Indigenous Peoples’ Day Screening — CLEARCUT (1991) sponsored by Earthbound Beer
October 9, 2023 : 7:00 pm
“A forgotten masterpiece…asks questions and presents scenarios that many films dare not touch. Unique, bold and captivating.” -E-Film Blog
Arkadin is partnering with our friends at Earthbound Beer for the ultimate Indigenous Peoples’ Day movie night. Come out for a totally free screening of the singular eco-horror-thriller CLEARCUT, a film about Native land rights, ecological devastation, and the political use of violence. CLEARCUT is an unforgettable exploration of Indigenous folklore, newly restored in 4K from the original 35mm answer print. A white lawyer arrives in Northern Ontario to defend Indigenous activists who are blocking a logging company’s clearcut of old growth on their land. A pacifist by nature, and perceiving himself as sympathetic to Indigenous concerns, the lawyer finds his values shaken when he is paired with an angry, rogue Indigenous activist named Arthur (Graham Greene, one of Canada’s most towering and beloved actors). Arthur insists on kidnapping the head of the logging company in the hopes of teaching him the price of his destruction.
ABOUT NATIVE LAND LAGER:
Native Land will be available in cans. We brewed this Mexican lager with Heritage Oaxacan Green Corn courtesy of Sugar Creek Malt. We will be donating a portion of Native Land proceeds to Navajo Ethno-Agriculture, a Native American founded and operated non-profit education farm on the Navajo Nation, that retains traditional ecological knowledge while promoting western science with the youth. Here’s more information about the Native Land Project: Bow & Arrow Brewing Co., the first Native Woman-owned brewery, based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, announced on the October 10th Today Show, its second-year of the Native Land National beer collaboration. The collaboration will launch in November to celebrate Native American heritage month and participation will run through the end of October 2023. Bow & Arrow has developed the Native Land recipe, concept and label. Breweries across the country are invited to participate in brewing the recipe, using the label template and committing to donate beer profits to Native American non-profits focused on ecological stewardship, access to ancestral lands and/or revitalization of traditional agriculture and food ways. The first version of the collaboration, which began in November 2021, has raised nearly $90k to date, with 47 breweries participating, across 23 states and two Canadian territories. This year’s Native Land recipe will be a Mexican-style lager with heritage corn.
This screening is totally free. You may reserve a spot using the button at the top of the page, but a ticket is not required for admission.
