George Lucas’ debut dystopian sci-fi mind-bender THX 1138 (1971) w/ George Lucas Early Shorts @ 5 pm — $7

January 10 : 6:00 pm 7:45 pm

THX 1138 feels like a hypnotic dreamscape, so luminously stark, from its white-on-white abstract sets to the wide-eyed, bald, near catatonic residents of this world.” -Washington Post

A chilling exploration of the future is also a compelling examination of the present in THX 1138, starring Robert Duvall as a man whose mind and body are controlled by the government. THX makes a harrowing attempt to escape from a world where thoughts are controlled, freedom is an impossibility and love is the ultimate crime. A sober yet mesmerizing future thriller, George Lucas’ first picture is light years away from the light saber action of Star Wars. Indeed, THX 1138 may even outdo 1984 and Brave New World in painting a bleak, dehumanized future where every person is given pills to quiet emotions, eliminate sex drive, increase work production and prevent the questioning of authority. We will be screening the 2004 George Lucas Director’s Cut.

Before the film, starting at 5 pm, we’ll be showing some of George Lucas’ rarely screened early shorts, so come out early!

This film as screening as part of Arkadin’s January-long spotlight on DYSTOPIAN VISIONS, chilling peeks into humanity’s doomed future.
