This Halloween, we doff our cap to the granddaddy of horror, Edgar Allan Poe, with our all-day POE-A-THON!

Featuring nearly 12 hours of Poe adaptations, we’ve got everything from avant-garde silents to stone-cold classics to a mystery WTF disasterpiece you won’t want to miss. Plus THREE movies starring St. Louis’ beloved hometown horror hero, Vincent Price, and two FREE events.

Each screening is ticketed separately, so come for a movie or two, or stay all day … if your nerves can handle it.

Playing like an opium-induced hallucination, The Fall of the House of Usher is silent cinema at its eeriest and most evocative. Directed by French Impressionist filmmaker Jean Epstein and co-written by legendary Surrealist Luis Buñuel, this atmospheric nightmare takes one of Poe’s most famous stories and traps you inside its titular location, a sprawling, unsettlingly sparse mansion that seems to breathe, its walls bending under the pressure of obsession and impending doom. With its dreamlike pacing, uncanny imagery, and disorienting visual tricks, the film transforms the tale into a trance-inducing spectral cinema worthy of comparison to Nosferatu and Vampyr.

This program also includes the 1936 silent short The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar based on Poe’s story about a doctor who performs a hypnosis experiment on a dying man, trapping him between life and death. Surprisingly graphic and grotesque for a low-budget Italian film from the 1930s, this 12-minute short is a perfect Halloween trick and treat.
