HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940)

February 1 : 3:00 pm 4:45 pm

“Fast, funny and vastly entertaining, HIS GIRL FRIDAY is, if anything, brighter and breezier than THE FRONT PAGE of which it is a brilliant remake.” – Philadelphia Inquirer

An inspired bit of cinematic alchemy, HIS GIRL FRIDAY took Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s hit play “The Front Page” (already a successful film in 1931), recast one of its lead roles from male to female, and created the fastest, funniest screwball romance Hollywood’s ever seen. Rosalind Russell plays dogged reporter Hildy Johnson, whose love-hate relationship with hard-driving editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant) is complicated by the little fact that the two used to be married. Russell and Grant deliver career-defining roles amid an ensemble of crackerjack character actors in this deliciously cynical tale of media bloodlust. Master director Howard Hawks never pace flag while a flurry of quips fly by a mile a minute courtesy of Charles Lederer’s sidesplitting script (as well as few cheeky ad libs from Grant).
