HIS MOTORBIKE, HER ISLAND (1986) — Teenage Dream: Obayashi in the ’80s

August 30 : 5:00 pm 6:45 pm

This August, Arkadin is excited to present TEENAGE DREAM: OBAYASHI IN THE ’80s, a collection of restored films by Nobuhiko Obayashi, the filmmaker behind legendary horror freakout, House (also playing this month). These restorations are made possible by Cult Epics and the American Genre Film Archive.

“[Obayashi] feels like he’s reinventing cinema with every movie he makes.” – Sean Gilman

A tender and stylish blend of road movie and romance, His Motorbike, Her Island is a moving story of love and motorcycles from Japanese cinema magician Nobuhiko Obayashi (House). Aimless biker Ko finally finds purpose when he falls in love with Miyo, a young woman with an obsession for motorcycles. When she gets her own bike, Ko worries that her ravenous hunger for the road may lead to dire consequences. Shot in an evocative mix of color and black-and-white and threaded with wistful melancholy, feel your heart race on the stunning highways of His Motorbike, Her Island.

“Oh so warm, pleasant, quaint and sentimental yet somehow simultaneously sensuous, edgy and degenerate”easternKicks
